I was 9 years old when my family and I went to watch dil chahta hai in the theatre. The first time we watched it, all of us were just stunned and didn’t know what to feel. We watched it for the second time and just loved it. When we came out of the theatre , my parents and I started relating with the lead actors. My dad was Aakash because he’s the funny one, my mom was Sid because she’s the serious one and I was Sameer because I was the confused one. The movie makes us so nostalgic and it was one of the few movies I understood without my parents having to explain it. Now our whatsapp group is named dil chahta hai.

I think quality and diversity wise, 2006 beats 2001 but as far as iconic, trend setting and movies that changed bollywood goes, these 3 lagaan, dil chahta hai and k3g have to get credit !!

For that matter 2004 is pretty underrated, it had gems like Swades, Veer-Zara, Main Hoon Na, Lakshya, Dhoom and Ek Haseena Thi !!

Just a personal opinion but I think Sucharita's take on DCH is quite irrational.Although I am huge admirer of her reviews,this point of women characters in DCH was quite irrelevant. Each film has its own story and doesn't necessarily have to contain a female perspective.It is a story about male bonding and the female characters are used more like a catalyst in the story telling which is absolutely OKAY because the film promises to only be about he three friends. The same scene is there in female centric movies as well .For instance, Raj's character in Queen had a mere role of just pushing Kangana to go beyond her limits but it doesn't make Queen a bad film or anything .Or another example could be Veere Di Wedding which Suharita had praised quite whole heartedly,the male characters in the film were almost caricatures with no depth

I am from Lahore and I watched Lagaan in a NJ theatre with my family and I loved the excitement it created till the very final 30 mins of the movie - the way we clapped and rejoiced the victory! It was and still is one of my most fav movies

instead of wasting so much time on k3g how i wish they could have discussed these 3 other films released the same year : 1. Chandani Bar how it impacted tabu's career and remained madhur bhandarkar's best effort 2.Asoka an experiment which went the half way and somehow was derailed by the constant formulaic parts, one of srk's better efforts .the last 15 min is cathartic 3 moonsoon wedding

I agree with you Anupama, the romance between Shahrukh and Kajol in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, is something else, especially in the wedding song. Coming to Lagaan, I found the love angle between the English Mem and the village hero unbelievable! Saif is the best thing in Dil Chahta Hai!

At the start of the Lagaan, it’s mentioned that the village is in the centre of India and Awadh is prominent here. Since we have seen the making of Lagaan therefore we know that it was shot in Gujarat otherwise you cannot tell where it was shot.

I watched K3G in a small screen theatre and that too sitting in the stall section with our domestic help. They were a lot of mosquitoes in that theatre but I enjoyed the film. Imagine the household help was so excited to take me to a film. I was just 9 years old and he used to call me " gentleman". I guess it was an unparalleled movie experience. somewhere it broke a class divide in my childhood brain. My mom and grandma were cool about this outing. I guess my love for movies began then.

The language is fictitious in Lagaan, just like it's location in India and the entire story of the film. Sucharita saying that she may not like the film, if it released today, due to that, says a lot about her choice. She noticed this but failed to notice the choreography of each song there. Anyways, each one has a right to their opinion. 👍🏼

Wonderful session @Sucharita -if I am not mistaken Lagaan was only shot in Bhuj but it is set somewhere in North India along the Delhi/ Punjab border, I think they mention it in the opening credits. But agree that the dialect could have been better thought out but maybe the makers went with what would have been widely accepted lingo :)
