Yeeeessssss, I LOVE that Jeff is getting what's so cool about the Japanese transit system. This is my 'thing'. I've literally watched hundreds of these videos and recognize most lines. It's just so soothing. What a weirdly specific niche that feels like it was made just for me. Thanks, Jeff 🙏

I'm surprised more simulators don't try this sort of thing, I imagine a lot of train sims could benefit from a more FMV style.

The "Japanese Rail Sim" series from Sonic Powered all works like this - FMV video synced to where you are and the speed you're running. I played most of them on the 3DS.

The FMV is shockingly well done. Probably the best use of FMV I've ever seen in a game.

I hope they add some lighting effects to the inside of the train because I agree the FMV use is phenomenal but the inside of the train is so jarring.

Ongakukan work always uses FMV train recording, they definitely knew what were they doing when recording these!

There's software for stationary bikes that runs on your PC and plays a video of whatver track you like as you bike it. It can also use the track's elevation profile to change your pedalling resistance accordingly - it's pretty cool.

The Densha de Go series has been doing train sims like this for years. In the dark days of the PS3 launch, I legitimately thought about importing one of them.

I had the sound down at first and thought the graphics looks almost photo real. Then realised it was video. Shows how strong expectations are, it was only *almost* real.

Strange mp4s. It must be in the metadata? And i wonder what would happen if you replaced it with a movie MP4 lol.

I was at TGS and that shit was insanely busy when the afternoon ticket holders turned up. I can't imagine how it'd be if tourists were in full swing too. People were bumping into me and getting in my way so much, but I got to play SF6 and the Steam Deck before it got too bad.

The Stockholm local traffic company had a Stockholm subway simulator like this at their railway museum back in the early 90s, I presume it was also based on the simulator for their actual drivers. Would love to see its VHS footage getting digitised and released in this form. I assume most railway companies made these video based simulations back in the day.
