Another clean PS1 style in Godot vid as usual 😎 And aye I should really add a little note on the page about reducing the warping intensity through adding more polys to geometry - PS1 environments are often way higher poly counts than you'd initially think because of this!

It's really impressive that you research all these techniques to perfectly replicate the PS1 aesthetic. When I make stuff in Dreams (PS4), I can apply gadgets to pixelate the screen, add line bars, and other grades and effects. These can work pretty well, but it's never going to look as reminiscent as carefully replicating the PS1 environment.

The youtube algorithm prefers if you make an entire game for 1 video. Like valorant and apex legend video. I think after you make the game, you should make a video having a title like If overwatch was a ps1 game, where you show the entire process.

3:49 I thought PS1 developers had very tight polygon budgets so subdividing meshes just to make textures work sounds kinda odd. I don't mean you shouldn't do so, but that it baffles me if they did so back then.

4:02 I suggest using a Subdivision Surface modifier on a mesh, instead of directly subdividing it in Edit Mode, because undoing such changes at a much later session can get tricky. You can check an option to apply all modifiers when exporting your assets to .GLTF2 (the format compatible with Godot), if I remember correctly. That way, you can also toggle the amount of subdivision visible in the Viewport, as well as the amount of subdivision made in the final Render / Export using just the modifier.
@garbaj
@garbaj 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, using a subsurf modifer is the correct way to do it. Thankfully I have a non subdivided copy of the file saved as a backup, but using the modifier is much more efficient

A lot of PS1 games would also subdivide geometry on the fly as you got close to a surface, look at Snake crawling through vents in MGS1 for a nice example of this. I've found this effect hard to replicate in contemporary engines like Unity, but I haven't looked into how hard it might be in Godot.

2:50 "...320p, which is the native resolution of the PS1..." This is not true. The "native resolution" of the PS1 was selectable for developers but for most 3D titles it was 240p (or approximately 240 vertical pixels) because of performance benefits of drawing less pixels. I believe you are confused with the horizontal resolution of the PS1, which is usually in 4:3 3D games 320 pixels. However, resolutions are not defined by their width, they are defined by height, which takes aspect ratio into account. 720p is 720 vertical pixels, not horizontal pixels, etc. The PS1 also supports 480i output and would often switch display resolutions when displaying 2D menus as 480i before returning to 240p for gameplay. This was particularly helpful when developers wanted to display text-heavy content, as higher resolutions allow for more text with better readability. Very few games on the PS1 chose 480i with full 3D scenes while maintaining acceptable performance though it was not impossible, and some games opted to do this. Generally, games that ran at 480i only could support up to 30fps, while games at 240p could support 60fps.

I really love this aesthitic, and have personally written a universe of lore i would describe as space persia and Rome, and you are spot on with the low poly aesthetic I'm wanting and I wonder if you would like a partner My name is William walsh, and I've spent the last couples years unemployed writing a new franchise I hope to rival Marvel and DC, and figured releasing the lore in a game that unpacks the universe and gives you a good linear storyline for players to finally have a real 3rd person action game for mobile better than a ps2 "cinematic" game, this could be a genuine game changer and start my brand out the gates swinging. I think there's a gap in the market of good original traditional 3d action mobile games designed for the actual input mechanics of the phone that you can't play in a better form somewhere else. Thus I have spent this time developing a control scheme that I think is not only unique and original, but very well could oversee the decline of traditional single input buttons on mobile in favor of analogue button inputs that very well could make the traditional video game damage system obsolete in favor of more nuanced combat mechanics I've developed. This combat system makes every encounter dynamic, and there's potential to expand into nearly a half dozen sequels based on my lore, but if we could just talk, I'll explain everything, and hopefully pull you on board. I wouldn't pour my life into this if I didn't think the returns could be phenomenal, and really put me and anyone who will joing my cause on the map as everyone would be curious to try the new legendary killer app 3d action game of the mobile devices everyone has in their hand already to know about the game Sincerely, i don't even just want money, and wouldn't be shy about sharing, I just want to put my name and brand on everyone's scope. I love what I do and want to write until I die, but starting out the profit is a difficult process without anyone to share the goal with. The game's graphics won't be complex but instead more like a playstation one game where lighting on levels and character models is baked in, the texture resolution will be low, and there's no night cycles or weather change, and areas will be like big open 3d sandbox toybox levels not quite on open world scale but still exploration based. Use infinity blade as a reference for the sort of tone and level of realism I'm wanting. The most potentially complex thing I want from this game engine is a parkour system composed of wall running and jumping, a ledge grab, and a very hands on and fun climbing system that results from the combat system I've created which is so much better than the basic hold direction to climb of traditional games. The rest of the stuff has some pretty useful tutorials and packs for unity which make that stuff pretty easy, and some of thevwork is done and made free by others already.

am I the only one thinking the details (muzzle flash, impact while ult) are "too" bad? Like The PS1 was capable of sprite rendering and lots of details like these are done with sprites. Using a clunky undetailed model kinda seems "off" u know? And I think the animation is too stiff too. I like the way it goes and love projects like these but I think often people doing things like these oversaturate the "bad clunky nostalgia" feeling of the PS1 and display it even worse as it actually was.
