MrMario, you probably know this by now. So i will mention this for the viewers. The 1.6 has the clock cap as well. It is located by the IDE port. They moved it and replaced it with one that doesnt fail as much as the old ones. "DO NOT REMOVE THOSE CAPS" You will kill your 1.6 box. Great videos man keep it up.

For sure! I have a tutorial showing how to remove the clock cap and mention that it isn't necessary for 1.6 consoles.

4 years later but I just wanted to let you know why the flux made it harder to bridge those points, it’s because flux helps join solder to the copper pads and it basically sucks it away from the board to the individual copper pad.

A bit of a quick tip for anyone trying to do this for the first time. There is also another method of bridging the two points together without the use of solder. You can actually use some conductive paint to bridge the two solder points together and I found it to be way easier. It's also safer to do as it won't damage your Xbox if you mess up and end up breaking the solder pads on the motherboard. You can easily just wipe it off with some isopropyl alcohol and just reapply it. This second method is perfect for people who are not good at soldering such as me. I was able to flash the EvoX bios to an Xbox with this method and it was awesome. Great video man!

Just fyi ide cables don't carry power just data the 40 vs 80 is just doubling wire to eliminate crosstalk between the wires so in 40 wire 1 wire per pin in 80 2 wires per pin in the xbox sata hdd's send data too fast even with a ide to sata converter so to fix that you upgrade to a 80 wire cable for fast communication between the hdd and the motherboard and with that speed come crosstalk which again is why we double to wires

Needing an 80 pin makes no sense as the Xbox should be limited to the slower UDMA 66 transfer rates anyway. The 80 pin was for UDMA 130 as I recall.

I just did a TSOP flash for a co-worker. I couldn't find my iron. I used a conductive pen instead. I bridged the points on a 1.0, let dry for 10 minutes. Booted up and raincoat allowed me to dump and flash the bios.

Good job getting one with a Sammy drive, as they're the best drive with this console. The scene for the OG Xbox was THE best scene of all consoles. Homebrew and hardware mods released for it was insane. I still have my 1.0 somewhere in storage, with the capacitor removed of course.

I need to get back my original 1.0 and remove the clock capacitor! I would agree with it being one of the best, I didn't get to really get my hands dirty with hardware mods until 2016 and I love the freedom of information the scene has. Lots of good sources for Xbox info, and people all on board for sharing. Also still seeing active interest and development on 16 year old hardware is awesome.

If your HDD dies in an unmodded xbox, you can recover. Read the EEPROM by connectng a Raspberry PI to the I2C pins of the LPC header (any version of motherboard) copy the eeprom.bin to your PC, use XboxHdM32-USB to make an lock the new drive (This will take hours). Install the new drive and you are good to go :).

You're welcome! I knew they were different but thought it was a recommendation to upgrade the cable, not a requirement. The original is fine for IDE drives, SATA needs that extra power from an 80 wire cable.

At 14:16 it should be noted when you said you lifted one of the MB pads and had to put that wire there. Since you lifted that pad on the MB if you tried to turn the Xbox on it would have FRAGED (Flashing Red and Green Light) as one of my first attempts at soldering the two points on an Xbox I ended up ripping one of the pads off the MB and when I tried to turn on the system it FRAGed. But once I wired the alternative points it was saved. Just figured I should point that out.

Good to know! I don't replace it as a modified dashboard will set the clock to sometime in 2007, I've also noticed if I have the console hooked up to my network it will just grab the date that way as well. Sometimes I might have to edit the year or adjust the time a bit, but it normally gets the date mostly correct :p

Hi MrMario. I've heard the words 'locking' and 'unlocking' thrown around a lot when it comes to replacing an original xbox hard drive. What exactly is a locked hard drive? Is the factory installed HD paired with the the original xbox or motherboard in some way? Is it something unique Microsoft only did with the original xbox HDs?
@meetoo594
@meetoo594 6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much what you said, the drive and motherboard have a unique matching key that `unlocks` the drive at boot if the keys match. If the keys dont match it throws a `your xbox needs servicing` message up and wont do anything else. The modchip in mine just bypasses the check so you can use any drive you like.

You have a Samsung 605B drive in that console. I know you got your start flashing 360 FW. Not many people knew this but C4E actually wrote CFW for the original Xbox as well. If you decide to do that to this one(although not very necessary anymore), the guides can be hard to find now that XS has disappeared. However, I still have one if you are interested in it.

Hi! Great video. I'm just thinking about getting an original Xbox to mod, and I'd like to have your opinion on a few things since your advice has helped me in the past. Which revision of the Xbox should I try to look for? Can I replace the clock capacitor with a new one from a good brand like Nichikon to retain original functionality? Or is it possible to replace the capacitor with a non-electrolytic type of capacitor? And lastly, which mod chip do you think I should get for hardmodding the console? I saw your video on the X3 being very expensive, so what would be a better option? Thanks a bunch.

1.0-1.5 revision. You can replace the clock capacitor, but no real need to. If you go with a 1.0-1.5 revision, you can enable write access to the TSOP flash and flash a custom BIOS directly to the console. No need for a chip at that point.

Would you recommend doing the softmod, then TSOP/Bios flash, then replace HDD. Or softmod, HDD swap, then TSOP/Bios flash?
@MrMario2011
@MrMario2011 6 жыл бұрын
The former. You have to softmod in order to TSOP flash, and once you TSOP flash you can use any hard drive so you don't need to worry about locking it.

@@MrMario2011 Thanks for the walk through and suggestion to TSOP first. Bios is flashed, new hdd is in and games are being ripped to it. Though I couldn't get it to do the G drive. originally was going to do 137gb on F and rest on G, put media on f and games on G, but it would not recognize the g partition, so just had to do the whole 1tb on F. Oh well, not a big deal. Removing my clock cap, as soon as my pliers touched it (didnt even squeeze it yet to wiggle) and it started spewing acid. So had to baking soda the heck out of the board and all. Oh well. Repasting the cpu/gpu and swapping the fan is a must do for all xbox owners, not just those that plan to softmod or TSOP it.

got a used xbox from eBay a couple months back. got for cheap because they said disc drive won't open, but it just intermittently gets stuck, replaced band on disc drive and open/closes fine. so considering its this old and hasn't died should I worry about replacing the clock capacitor? I don't have a soldering iron nor do I wanna mess with one (I'm visually impaired), and I don't wanna risk pulling it out and messing anything up.

ALWAYS. It isn't a matter of if it will leak, it's a matter of when. If left leaked out long enough, it WILL cause damage to your console.

Hi Mr. Mario. Great video. For someone already softmodded, can you sum up some of the benefits of TSOP? If I understand correctly, ISO reading from HDD is one advantage (no dealing with long file names). What else? Does anyone have suggestions for 80-wire cables that are better "Xbox" configured than the standard computer ones? It seems you have to fold the cables various times due to the spacing between connectors, On an Xbox, does it matter which end goes to the motherboard? Thanks!
@MrMario2011
@MrMario2011 7 жыл бұрын
In short you get the benefits of a modchip without actually obtaining and installing a chip itself. You cannot read ISO files on an Xbox. I linked in the description the 80-wire IDE cable I used that works in part 2, folding it is inevitable.

Hey how are you ? Question next time you try a tsop can you try to use a rear window defogger kit to draw a line across the tsop points instead of solder and let me know how it goes its conductive and it shouldn't wipe officer it dries i thought of this after I did my solder points its a pain when you lift the pads off the board lol😆.

NEVER EVER Pry on the cables themselves to disconnect them,get pliers and disconnect them by holding the edges of the plastic and pulling up. You can rip those cables by disconnecting them like that.

80wire is not for power.. the difference between an 40wire and 80wire is that the 40wire has 1 wire per pin, the 80 wire has 2 wires per pin with the new wire going to ground. This provides shielding, as the higher speeds (frequencies) of the sata drives will cause cross talk on a 40wire cable.

I would love to mod my Xbox, just with a simple softmod :D But the thing is I wish that the softmod can be removed easily and have it not be permanent on the hard drive but instead can be easily removed going back to the systems default state like the ps2 can, I don't know why, it just gives you peace of mind that you can remove the softmod easily and have it as if it was never soft modded, I'm weird :P Oh well, I'll still do it Great video dude!
