How to Install an Aladdin XT Plus2 Modchip in a Xbox 1.6

This tutorial will show you how to install the Aladdin XT Plus2 modchip in an original Xbox console, specifically a 1.6 motherboard revision. Unfortunately the 1.6 variant of the Xbox remedied the option to allow users to TSOP flash the console, so in order to run a custom BIOS you must hardmod the system with a modchip. If you are wanting to run a custom BIOS but do not want to go through the hassle that might come with installing this modchip, I would recommend looking for a older motherboard variant and going with a TSOP flash. However, if your only console option is a 1.6 or you're wanting to do this for the fun of it, you've come to the right place!
This process involves soldering a pin header to the LPC DEBUG port, rebuilding the LPC to allow the modchip to manipulate the console, enabling the modchip to be always-on, and cutting a trace for the console's LFRAME.

Just recently did this to a 1.6 Crystal OG Xbox. And I gotta say I was little bit hesitant at first due to having to cut the l trace on the motherboard, but after some thought I realized am I really gonna need the stock bios? No that’s why I TSOP other Xbox’s so honestly it doesn’t really harm the console and due to your video I was successfully able to do this first try as I had never hard modded 1.6 motherboards before. But now I can hard-mod any original xbox that comes my way. Hats off to you Mr. Mario!

Just watched your guide a few times and then soldered on my modchip. Thanks for the guide. Quick tip for others, if it doesn't work and flashes red and green go back and try reflowing all the pin heads; they're probably not connected properly. I would recomment soldering two opposite coreners and then removing the tape to prevent it from melting to the headers. When soldering wires to vias on the motherboard (the tiny circles) I recommend using 30 AWG (unless recommended otherwise by the modchip instructions or tutorial) If the wire will go into the via and through the other side, solder it that way. If it does not then take exposed part of the 30AWG wire amd with a pair of tweezers make a loop so it forms a circle. Then tin it with solder so you have a solid circle at the end if your wire. Then solder the circle to the via on the motherboard. This will maximize the surface area of the wire with the via to help prevent it from coming off and will make the strongest solder joint possible. After it's soldered tack it down with some hot glue. Do not ever pull on that wire! If you pull the via and the trace off the board, you will have to find the end on the other side of the board and jump traces or else your motherboard is dead. I have never installed one if these modchips however I have done a lot of soldering and a few RGH xbox 360's. I am also an electrical engineering student with tons of soldering experience. PS the solder joints that look like balls are not good solder joints.

I did everything in the video. I know I am late this but I had time now. I spent 8 whole hours with it and nothing. Meaning now I am stuck with the 3 restart and green and red flashes. I reflowed the connections. I caps are good. Now I don't care. I left the chip inside so it can stare at me with its red eyes. Great video by the way

I’d really recommend touching up your soldering technique. See how the solder looks like balls surrounding the through hole header? That’s because the solder hasn’t actually “flowed” into the space between the board and the header you are soldering in.

The solder did flow in, the balls are there because I used more than what I needed, not because of bad solder joints. Although I have improved with through-hole soldering these pins, I've done a few others after I made this tutorial where I didn't ball out and they looked much cleaner.

Honestly if you just changed out that conical tip to a fine tip chisel and got a smaller diameter solder it would yield better results. The other thing I would do is source an old ide cable for your conductors and get some tweezers. But in reality these are things you figure out with experience. And no better way to get experience than to do stuff like this. So carry on.

Even doujindance's work looks decent now and that guy couldn't solder to save his own life. It really just comes down to experience. When I started out 30 years ago my work sucked ass. I know this because I opened a console I did back then a year ago to do some basic maintenance and was horrified. Now my work looks basically factory. But I do have 30 years and good tools so there's there difference. I don't think this work is bad. And it's good enough that I know it will get better with experience. We need more people doing this kind of work. I'm sick of the throw away electronics mentality. But then again, it is the reason why I consistently pick up old consoles for $10-$15 every week still. I have a stack of modded consoles at my house ready for sale that I will flip for a 500% profit. So keep up the good work Mario

It might be a bad visual angle but those solder joints for the pin header are not going to last. You want the (leaded) solder to form a cone around the pin. A disco ball means something went wrong, like not enough heat, or possibly way too much flux. And *always* pre-tin your wires. Never rely on excess solder on your iron's tip.

It's the visual angle, I put more solder on the points than I needed so that's why there are balls there. The joints are fine and are making proper contact.

I have to agree with Teddy. Used way too much solder. It is far from ideal solder connection. There's a reason every other through-hole mounted connection you see on ANY properly built circuit board aren't round circles. Just look near the R7P6 resistor (right side) in the video to see how a proper through-hole solder joint should look.

Picked up an OG XBox from the thrift store and discovered it to be a 1.6, and got an Aladdin 4032 replacement chip from ebay. I was worried that it may not come with the correct bios pre-flashed but following your video I was able to get it working! I also upgraded the HDD using your other video. The only step that I do not see here is soldering a wire from the D0 to the screw plate (its mentioned in the PDF that you linked). I assume cutting the L-trace achieves the same thing? I did both to be safe and everything seems to be working fine. Thanks a lot for your videos man!

I accidentally ripped a trace that you are supposed to solder to near r7t3, luckily I have some super small transformer wire that I hope I fixed the trace with. I soldered it to the point the trace started and at the part I ripped the trace near the middle of the connector I have soldered in, I have some clearcoat nail suff covering the broken trace and keeping it on the board so be careful to not put your soldering iron on its max setting unless you have a broken one that only works on the highest setting ._.

I want to note that in the document that describes the procedure (in wich I think your tutorial is based on) they also "Ground the D0 Point" with another wire. But I have followed your tutorial on two 1.6 xBoxes and it works without doing that D0 grounding. ¿Can you explain what is that D0 grounding about? Thank you, Mr. Mario. Edit: after some searching, it seems that 1.6 xBoxes do no need the D0 grounded. Prior versions do.

When you install a new IDE drive why do you say that we need to set is as "master", the original IDE drive is always on "cable select". Is there a reason for "master" setting to the new one? In this video you say "master" but from what I can see from where you put the jumper and the indication on the label, your new drive it is actually set to "cable select". You must be mistaken. I always set my new IDE drives to the exact setting as the originals were, which is cable select and they always work fine.

i have a 1.6 but i also have a 1.0. the 1.0 is my ogrinal one i had in storage and sure enough the clock cap was leaking but no damage was done to the board. the 1.0 will be getting the mod first. only thing was bad was the dvd drive. i sacrifced my 1.6 dvd drive and bam shes alive again.

If you know the HDD password to something you changed, you can unlock it and get your data. If the drive is already unlocked you can do so as well. If your drive is locked and you don't know the password or key, you can extract the EEPROM from the motherboard to unlock your drive.

i just did this mod for the second time but i did not cut the trace at FIRST.... installed the chip and it attempted to boot then flashing red and green no video output. i checked the connections over and over again the xbox still worked without the chip. then i found a link saying u need to connect the d0 if u do not cut the trace so i went ahead and cutthe trace and xbox booted up with evo. for all who dont want to cut trace right away like me.

Your console will boot up to a black screen after the BIOS loads as a softmod can't be on a hardmodded system.

I broke the via on the one connection that is the really short one in the diagram. Some guide had them just put a blob of solder between the pin and via but it didn't work and I tried to do a really short connection and broke the via in the process. EDIT: I managed to scrape some of the solder mask and expose some copper but holy hell it was delicate and I hope to never touch those wires because if it comes off I think it will be the end of the console. Put some super glue to hold the wires as well. I'm still terrified but hopefully it should at least be untouched and stable until someone removes the motherboard from the case

Random question. Will this work on a 1.1 xbox? Also I bought the 30awg wire in your description but it looks different or more thin than one used in your video. Is it the same as one you are using? You can do this on any Xbox model, although this guide has steps specifically for the 1.6 console. For anything older you'll need to clear the LPC bus. You can skip the steps of cutting the LFRAME trace and rebuilding the LPC, as those two are 1.6 only fixes.

hey man i got a question..... i live in a smaller town where things are hard to get ahold of sometimes......local walmart has some soldering stuff but noting fancy. would say, a run of the mill soldergun, solder and flux off the shelf work for what i would be doing? Hey Ronald! That all would most likely be fine as long as you have fine enough tips, I did many of my intricate modifications with Radio Shack hardware first starting out. As long as you know how to solder, you can successfully complete this.

Hi! Big fan and I've followed many of your tutorials but this one seems to have not worked out as well as I had hoped. I followed every step exactly but I think my Xbox is bricked. First power on, after the video, I got the Evox logo but boots to a black screen and the front LED is yellow. I pulled the modchip off the pin header and it turns on but you hear it power on, then off then flashes green and red and no video. Do you have any advice on this problem?

Cutting the LFRAME could prevent it from booting without a modchip. As for the black screen, it sounds like you had a softmod? You cannot have a softmod on a hardmodded Xbox. If you pop the modchip back in you should be able to nuke your hard drive using a recovery disc such as Hexen.

i got an xbox a few days ago and am looking into modding it. however the previous owner has already upgraded the hdd and it seems to boot into evox and i wanna restore it to stock or at least put a better mod on it maybe even get an ssd but im really unsure how to go about doing that. kinda worried i'l mess something up and end up with a brick. there also doesn't seem to be a mod chip anywhere so i guess its soft modded

Hey MrMario! your videos have been extremely helpful! thanks a lot. I have an 1.6 xbox with aladdin. when i hold power button for 1sec, it boots the EvoX. when i press power quickly, it tries to boot the original dash, but gives me error 13, sometimes 16. I would love to have the "dual boot" option, where if i wanted to have an "OG experience" i could boot the original dash with a quick pwr button press, is it possible? i hate booting up the original dash inside another dash. I can't seem to find it if its possible, my guess is nobody would want this as the original dash is extremely limited 😂

I haven't done a dual-boot setup in years. Optimally the best option is to have a custom BIOS, boot into a custom Dashboard, and have the MS Dashboard installed as an app or selection you can boot into from a custom Dashboard.

It works on all, but you have to rebuild the LPC on a 1.6

4:50 Is this part necessary for a 1.0? Oh, the stink bug Xbox works by the way. I want to get a modchip to run backups of games since my disc drive is extremely picky and only works with one disc.

i've been trying to install one of these in my xbox, now when i turn it on it restarts twice and then flashes red and green. i've re-checked the connections and i'm pretty sure its all ok. Any ideas as to what is going on here?. i'm using the v4 lpc rebuild board if that makes any difference? . Any help would be appreciated
