Hey there, as a Biologist I need to intervene. You said that all mutations are defects. That is not true. Mutations are nothing negative per se. In fact, mutations are the only reason evolution is possible. It's the core element that allows creatures to adapt (passively) to their environment and is therefore necessary for stable populations. I would suggest for your to look into the Darwin theory which explains it quite nicely. All adaptations in nature were possible through mutation. It is only a defect, when it influences the health, causes deformities, neurological issues etc. Those would not be passed on in nature due to natural selection. Only the best adapted ones would reproduce which is why all animals have specific coloration or behavior (see the peppered moth for example, Biston betularia).
@Balls2U6 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment and I kind of agree, however Mutations result from errors during DNA replication (especially during meiosis) or other types of damage to DNA (such as may be caused by exposure to radiation or carcinogens), which then may undergo error-prone repair (especially [microhomology-mediated end joining], or cause an error during other forms of repair, or else may cause an error during replication. Albino ball pythons are a great example of this as they can not survive in the wild.... evolution is different to mutation.
@Sheytopia6 жыл бұрын
No, sorry, you don't seem to understand my point here. You are saying it in a way that every alteration of the DNA is faulty. But this is not the case. And no, evolution is not different to mutation. Mutations are what make evolution happening. Sometimes the mutation cause the animal to adapt to a situation, so they are beneficial and sometimes they are not (like albinism). That was the core of my comment. Mutations are not inherently negative. They are not always defects and they are not what we would commonly call an error in all cases. I am very aware of how mutations occur and I know how meiosis and replication work but still it is not just damage to the DNA but actually - again, as I said - the core of evolution. You are just seeing it from the wrong perspective. If DNA didn't mutate, life would not have developed!
@Balls2U6 жыл бұрын
😊 I do see what your saying..... I guess I should of said, that MOST or SOME mutations are defaulted? Great debate for sure
@Balls2U6 жыл бұрын
How I understand it is that Mutation is a change in DNA within a single cell of a single individual. The majority of mutations happen in somatic (body) cells and cannot be passed on. Only mutations that occur in germ line cells (sex cells) can be passed on to descendants and Evolution is the change of genetics in populations over time

I would say "some" from a biological point of view :) Then I would not have argued ;)

I just bought my first ball python (it's also my first snake) and it's a bumblebee with a definite wobble. Despite all the research I did beforehand, no one brought up the genetic defects mentioned here. I so appreciate some further explanation of this topic and the realistic approach with breeding. The breeder I purchased the bumblebee from didn't say anything about the wobble, and I didn't know to ask at the time. This video really helped me understand the realities of defects and the "numbers game" associated with it. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos and learning even more about ball pythons. Thanks so much!

musca1musca hello and welcome to my channel, I'm sorry to hear that the breeder didn't tell about it.... That's even if they knew about it, but if they didn't then to me, they are not a breeder...... The wobble is nothing really to worry about, I find it cute sometimes.... Anyway thanks for watching and happy new snake

Thank you for this very informational vid. You've been able to clear up several issues I've had questions about. Maybe it's just me being a old woman, but why does it appear that these obvious defects of duckbills, bug eyes, kinks and even wobbles don't bother any of the breeders? Regardless of the defective snake's ability to thrive, it would drive me to research that individual snake's lineage to find out where the genetic fault lies, and I would exclude it from my breeding program altogether no matter how pretty the skin pattern. But again, I'm an old dog breeder, and perhaps things have changed a lot since I've retired. Cheers!
@Balls2U8 жыл бұрын
Long White Mane Thank you for watching..... Some people kick some genes in the nuts because they don't understand or have never worked with the gene they just go off what other people say, me if rather find out for myself and then find the facts out..... I love the spider gene and if I do hatch out one with a wobble I find it just adds to there personality..... I won't work with genes that can have kinks as this can mean putting snakes down, so I avoid those genes.... I have dog breeders in my family so because I breed for myself, I always push for quality over quantity ever time. Hope this makes sense 😊

From this video I now have a lot of questions to ask myself regarding one of my lessers that was born with 1 eye. He was originally thought to be possible dwarf due to his size (he was matching that of some of our hatchlings when he was over a year). I think a lot was due to his prior eating issues, but those all seem to have cleared up. Thanks for offering such in-depth info for all these different issues.

In my opinion, people should breed things as long as they know that there's a chance of defects, as long as these defects are not going to impact the health of the animal. Should they hatch a snake with defects, they should either have the snake put down if it can't have a good life, keep the snake and never breed it or have the snake neutered and then sell it on to someone that knows what's wrong with it. That way, we would hopefully eventually breed away from defects - basically like what dog breeders do (or SHOULD do).

Upside and downside, so I worked at Petco, who receives snakes from (Awesome Rodents), I named them, because I have seen wobbles in the Spiders, time after time, and they swear up and down the month old snakes they send are eating frozen. So they produce a Banana, and female pied...I pick them up. The female pied prolapse 5 times in a row(by this time ,I'm on a first name basis with my vet), who sends me to Philly to see a vet at the Philly Institute of Veterinarian medicine , right next to the collage. The Good Doctor informs me genetics..On the 6th prolapse I had her put to sleep. The Banana Ball Python with a deformed tongue, well that's another story, would love to breed her, but won't . Her tongue makes a perfect circle . the two points that would see and smell are at the back of her throat. She has to be hand fed, for the rest of her life. She is now 2 foot long and three years old. I plan to breed, but with integrity, just like you. We are just doing it for fun, with the babes placed carefully. This is a very Good video you put out....breed with Integrity.

Hey Gav, I changed my account picture to the spider I've got... I know it's not a big picture. KZbin never allows it. But at least you can kind of see the orange on her... Leucistics can have duck-bills, I know that because mine has it. How does the BEL get a duck-bill, if it's a trait in Cinnies & such? Kinks also happen when breeders don't maintain proper temps for the eggs. That's how we ended up with a kinked Pastave. =/ My spider Stargazes, usually when I walk with her from my chair back to her enclosure. Great video Gavin, loads & loads if information for people. I love when you do videos like this❣️ I learn more every day from these sorts of videos. 💟 🌾 Merry meet 🌿
@Balls2U8 жыл бұрын
Sansa Stark she's a stunner........I'll be honest, kinks are not because of temperatures, because in the wild or with maternal incubation the egg temps fluctuate between 84-92, I had my incubator drop out for a day, while I was away and it dropped down to 82 for that day.......I had no kinks at all, and with maternal incubation/wild they can take up to 72 days to hatch.....this is stuff I will cover in another video very soon and I'll put some facts forward to prove that it's not to do with temps but more to do with a weak or under developed embryo problems. but that's for another video haha 😊😉

Hi gavin another great video, it answered some of the questions I've had bouncing about in my head, I'm after another video request if you don't mind!!! I've been thinking about the banana/coral glow genes, lesser/butter genes and the hypo/ ghost genes also any others I haven't included, i have a butter enchi and a lesser enchi and they are slightly different, even on world of ball pythons once they are added to other genes they do look slightly different, but the others I can't see a difference between them. Surely there is a chance the first banana and first coral glow that came from west Africa were clutch mates or very closely related? One of the reasons I ask is the coral glows seem to be more expensive than the banana, the other reason is I don't want to buy different gened animals when they are basically the same, anyway great work on the video and all the others, sorry for the long question but I think a lot of people would like to know, cheers for now gavin see you in Doncaster Steve & Michelle

good vid , I think the main issue is also new people who have just or not long started breeding that don't know genetics properly I've explained to a few to people who I've sold to who are wanting to do spider x spider combo pairings which I've given them my advice in which its not recommend to do so but with some people they do not like to listen or take any advice . however I do agree that you could get wobble or may not , I have just a lot of spider combos and have woma combos and sable , sable is perfect not a single issue I also have a banana woma does have a little wobble , also a soulsucker spinner ( hgw , lesser , granite , spider , pinstripe ) not a single issue . so shows that not all combos or pairing would produce these issues its a possibility . my mate bred his pewter x Cinny and 2 died in the egg 1 died coming out of the egg and I'm pretty sure he still has 2 the male has duck bill and kinks in his neck which causes his head to always be on a permanent wonk / position if this makes sense the female however is spot on . keep up the vids

I recently got a leucistic, blue eyed ball python and I'm pretty sure she has bug eyes, though I don't know for sure since I haven't had a vet or a more experienced person look at her yet. So what I would like to ask if she has that defect does it do her any harm, does it affect her life at all? She seems fine, she's beautyful and healthy looking otherwise. Also if she has it, is she going to produce babies with it? I would love to breed her but I think I need to know if she will carry it onto the babies before making any decision about it. You mentioned pearls from spider to other genes (champs,woma, ect ect), what is your experience of spider to spider? Is it a lethal pearl baby? Is a super spider even possible? I have just read/seen so many different opinions on the spider gene being paired with a spider Just to throw a spanner in the works Kevin from NERD recently said that he never had any problems with spider to spider giving lethal baby's until other genes had been added to the pairing, for example as I understand it, bumble bee to spider.
@Balls2U8 жыл бұрын
Hassan El-Wardany I have never had a pearl from a spider to spider breeding, but other breeders have reported it....now they could of had another gene like woma or hgw in the mix I don't know.....but I agree with Kevin about breeding spider to spider 👍
@hasasanator8 жыл бұрын
Balls2U So if we go with the theory that spider to spider is safe and does not produce pearls, can a spider be co Dom any more if it does not produce a super? Or is it a case of the super is visually the same as a singe gene spider? You would think that there would be more reports of this if it was the case as spider is such a available gene. I love stuff like this, I can't wait until I make my first clutch and see what comes out. What I would love to do with something like this is have a proper study, for example have a group of let's say 5-10 spider to spider pairings, record all offspring/clutches/slugs/eggs that didn't make it full term repeat for a few years to ensure everything is consistent, keep all spider baby's and pair with normals and see if any are supers and repeat, obviously would be a massive undertaking but would be great knowledge for the community.
@Balls2U8 жыл бұрын
Hassan El-Wardany that would be great to prove out, Brian at snake bites has a pin stripe that gives all pin stripes and Mark at MarkusJane reptiles has a leopard which gives all leopards...so....my thoughts are that there could be a super spider and you would not be able to tell between super and none super. 👍

I've had a Champagne for 2 years, shes gorgeous and I adore her, totally underrated morph imo. I knew about the Spider wobble before I bought her, but it took me a year to discover that Champagnes also had it. Thankfully she's never shown any sign of it, but its a bit upsetting because I wanted to breed her in the future, but I dont know if I'd want to risk producing babies who may end up with a severe wobble or corkscrew :/ It'd be interesting to know peoples thoughts.

NetherwingEgg I wouldn’t do it. I’m not saying people who produce it are bad people, but why would you want to produce defective babies. It’s sad really
@surtu92214 жыл бұрын
@@youwouldntgetit2618 They are only genuinely defective if they can't survive or are experiencing chronic pain. These are just snakes that can't tell where 'up' is; they're special needs. In the case of the Champagne, you risk a wobble; a child with a really bad wobble will be unsaleable and will need you to be spot on in training it to feed especially in the first few months of life. Those needs are not exactly deal-breakers for some people; but they are definitely deal-breakers for others. As long as you have a plan for how you are going to take care of any 'special needs' babies, I'd say you can breed them and not feel the weight of immorality on your shoulders; so long as you're good to them, they can live very happy lives. If, however, you are neither emotionally nor financially ready to provide for the risk of special needs snakes, you shouldn't be breeding risky snakes that could result in unsaleable children you've no ability to care for. And you definitely shouldn't breed a special needs animal and try to sell it full price without warning the customer.

@asht.76404 жыл бұрын
I'm just wondering if the duckbill mutation is simply undesirable because of the look or if this makes it hard for them to eat or something? I would be willing to adopt a frankensnake that can live a quality life. I'm not interested in breeding so looks aren't really an issue. But I am really curious.

I'm not a snake breeder but used to breed birds. The defects come from the mutation and the small genetic pool the offspring all come from automatically creating inbreading. I'm not that familiar with snakes but wouldn't crossing cinnimons from different blood lines give off much healthier offspring then ones that are from the same blood lines?

I have a male desert pinstripe that I won't be breeding due to the desert gene, but watching your video had me thinking, would it be worth breeding a desert with something like a banana to produce more males? Or is it just the banana males that are producing the males and not the females? (If any of this makes any sense) 🤦♀️
@Balls2U4 жыл бұрын
If it was me I wouldn't breed a desert male at all... Beautiful looking pets
@kiroropupper39146 жыл бұрын
I think it's also important to understand that many breeders over inbreed their snakes to produce a color pattern. So the issue of breeding the same morphs with each other and producing defects may be more of a lack of genetic diversity in other genes than the morph being defective.
@Balls2U6 жыл бұрын
How would you explain a island with only one blood line from one species and them thriving?
@kiroropupper39146 жыл бұрын
@@Balls2U certain species are not as affected by inbreeding as others. They've adapted to be less diverse and still thrive. What ends up happening in that situation is the animals with genetic disadvantages or diseases are killed of in their environment. Only the most capable can survive. There's even a species of lizard in the southern US that has no males and the females reproduce asexually. Honey bees are very inbred as males don't leave the hive and only serve to mate with the queen.
@kiroropupper39146 жыл бұрын
I wasn't trying to say that morphs don't have they're issues. They do. But I believe the issue for most morphs might be correlated but not caused by the morph itself. With how much a rare designer PB is, it makes sense that most breeders (at least in the US) would ignore the physical problems if they're not life threatening and will make a profit. I wanted to clarify that there IS a current morph issue but it could be fixed if it is strongly correlated with the morph but not caused by it.

Paused at 17:55... Question: you said desert females either slug out or become egg bound when bred... I'm curious, when egg bound does that mean the eggs had been fertilized but just can't make their way out? And if so has anyone ever attempted a C-section on a viably pregnant desert female?
@Balls2U8 жыл бұрын
Emma Krakoski very good question, c selection is not that easy when it comes to snakes, because of how there body works. also because it's not an exact science for when a female is going to lay, (any think between 21-45 days after there last shed) it's very hard to pin point when to expect the eggs, so as a breeder do you expect eggs at day 21 or day 45? we just can't predict when's best.

Emma Krakoski Justin Kobylka recently did a trial/experiment with a desert female he has and shared his experience on his blog jkrballstreetjournal.com look it up if you want to read it.

fantastic information. iv always wondered about the spider gene. so i have a question. last season i paired a male lesserbee x normal. i hit awesome odds 3 lesserbees and 3 spiders. now my question. out of the 3 lesserbees i produced a female. would it be a bad idea to pair the daughter lesserbee to the father lesserbee to try for a BEL? please let us know we are new to this breeding hobby.
@Balls2U8 жыл бұрын
Slitherin Reptiles good question....is it the spider to spider or father to daughter part that your worried about?
@slitherinreptiles75988 жыл бұрын
its both. not so much the daughter to father tho. its more the spider to spider, THEN daughter to father to enable the defect even more
@Balls2U8 жыл бұрын
Slitherin Reptiles it's been well documented that most animals will inbreed, due to them living in groups or in remote locations, so that won't be a problem, spider to spider won't be a problem either....the problem you will have, is if you produced a defeat baby, you or otherpeople would blame it on the father x daughter or spider x spider.....now, I know the only way to prove that theses pairings was the cause of the defeat baby, would be to do a controlled breeding experiment.....I've had and seen defects in snakes that was not spider x spider and not father daughter breeding.....so I look at all the big breeders and look at there breeding results. Kevin at nerd, Corey woods and Ben rennick have breed loads of spider x spider and have had minimum defects....the other thing to think about is if it was a bad thing, then all the spider babies would come out defeated the same with the inbreeding pairing. hope this makes sense 👍

I did know about wobble, but did not know it was ALL spiders. I did ask about it. The breeder said he'd never had wobble in his spiders (the snake is a banana firebee), and when I got it, it indeed showed none. But within a year or so, it developed wobble. Fortunately, it doesn't impact his ability to eat or live, and it only shows up when he's excited.

I read in some blog the trick into breeding Desert females safelly and it makes a lot of sense! I wanna try it!! for me, the Fire Tiger is right next to the Batman! In nature, BPs find their own way of doing it well... the problem it's when they are in captivity and we close them in boxes with the conditions we think they want and that are right! We just need to set it up as they need it!

OK this is maybe a stupid question BUT can a python sense if there is something wrong with live feed ? I had a 1yr. old ball that would refuse live feeder mice from a particular store , but I also had a young associate at the store tell me at one point that their feeders died off after a few days ...so I was wondering if maybe she wouldn't eat those particular mice because of them being sick or diseased ?
@Balls2U7 жыл бұрын
Misty Smith it's not stupid and I think the answer is yes.... The reason I think this is because I've had bad food from a rat breeder and they wouldn't eat it, but when I tried my mates food, they smashed it.... After that the bad stuff went in the bin, and I never brought from that rat breeder since

Lots of animals can sense something is wrong with their food. Wether its a snake or monkey...my neighbor has a pet monkey that will ONLY eat the freshest fruit. For example you can give her 10 blueberries(2 of the berries were soft-er and she just threw them in the yard. If a snake senses a abnormal body temp or heart rate it will refuse to eat it. Kinda like if you order a salad and the lettuce has brown edges, you probably wouldn't eat it.....
