Wise Snake but not totally false... i heard before that ninjas did things like that... they werent fighters so they used everything to get over walls even their swords... BTW. also the shurican were used... definitaly i mean if u have no armour u are instantly dead if u havent any encounters... and poisonous darts arnt that useful in near distance... so yeah i am quite sure that this things were used... its just logical... Greetings
@vaughanmacegan40127 жыл бұрын
Have you ever thrown a shuriken? Shurikens are not used to kill people - you would need to be "Deadshot" (from Batman) to kill someone with a shuriken ... a direct shot to severe the carotid artery. They were simply used to distract an opponent they even mentioned that in the original video - for example, a person is unlikely to chase after you when he has a star stuck in his arm, head, body, leg - they are going to pull it out and bandage the wound ... of course the operative word is "unlikely" seeing as the damage is minimal if they are determined enough they could still chase you.
@julianfuchs92537 жыл бұрын
Vaughan MacEgan yeah but still you can distract someone terribly with this shurican... perfect to esacape if someone saw u who dont have a heavy armour... and shurican werent heavy or very striking u can carrie them easily and they were also great to genereally encounter heavy enemys by just throwing a 10 of them into the not armoured places(imagine u have a shurican in stuck into your knee which u cant remove but u still have to fight... its just obstructive) and if u really just walk into the enemys territory and everybody wants to kill u u may want to have a few more weapons by your side... They dont use such a sword as i remember they used bamboo sticks like ladders and the last few meters they klimed with smth. The stroke into the space between the single stones... it was more a tool than a weapon smth. Like the kunai...
@PyryKorh7 жыл бұрын

A note on poisons. Very few poisons ever existed (even today; through modern pharmaceuticals) which could be delivered, in a high enough dosage to have any noticeable effect, via a coated weapon. Only one plant-based poison could ever hope to achieve that. And the plant it's made from didn't arrive in Japan until, around the 1950s. Actual poisons will almost always need to be either injected or ingested. And, often, in fairly large doses.. At least, any which could be stored for any length of time, will be. Poison is a HUGE topic...and a very misunderstood one.
@RockerMarcee967 жыл бұрын
Well not a weapn coated plant based poison, but a deployed with a weapon and plant based. Thyme mixed in with belladonna extract in powder form delivered from an axe that is hollow on the inside and has holes in it's head. The first swing toward the opponent's face will cover him in blinding powder (it's going to hurt and actually blind you for a good 30 minutes). Well at least this is what Fiore de'i Liberi gives us for armoured duels.

Ironically, I regularly walk past a bookstore specializing in old books, and one of their illustrated books shows how you would ACTUALLY get over walls. Using a hooked ladder (blades/hooks at the top).(Living in Osaka) Which is a way better way than bending/breaking your sword to get over a wall. What the heck do you use once you get inside, after bending your sword. Also, how does pulling straight up on a strap pull the blade out from between the rocks? *facepalm*

I read a Japanese manga (Nintama Rantarô), it illustrates how ninjas use their swords to vault through short walls. The way is they put sword (still in scabbard), handle up, against the wall, then jump on the pommel to the top of the wall. Before they do that, they tie a rope into the scabbard, one end is tied to ninja's wrist. After being on top, they retrieve the sword using the rope.

Nah, Just wanted to verify that the use of sword to vault through the wall without damaging the sword is plausible, if not actually useful.
@MichaelBerthelsen7 жыл бұрын
phungvietanhao Not the way they describe it. Which is what we're discussing here. Not to mention, I'm not sure that would make any sense, since you could just use a stick, and not break your scabbard. Why not just use a stick for the same purpose? More secure, 0% chance of loosing/breaking your weapon, and would be far less suspicious, should someone stumble upon it. No clear dents in the soil, just someone having left a stick leaning against the wall.

you can straighten bent katana rather easy. just do it over your knee. but obviously its still stupid to bend a sword to climb a wall.

as far as ninja's and poison goes. I'm fairly certain they used it in food far more often than any other weapon, because slow acting poisons have always been the best method of assassination. As far as poison coated throwing weapons and blow darts go, most likely didn't happen outside of Hollywood. Even a really potent poison directly injected into a major vein is going to take awhile to circulate through the bloodstream before it takes affect. If the poison in question is only lightly coating something that most likely only got into capillaries, or lesser veins, your target is going to be made aware that someones trying to kill them, and have plenty of time to take action. It works for hunting because you can track the animal and wait for them to die, doesn't work so well for assassination and combat because they have plenty of time to sound the alarm and fight back.

This Gamer Guy okinawa case to be put simply is that they were a kingdom known as the ryukyu kingdom but during the edo period they were invade by the shimazu clan and its vassals in Satsuma from kyushu, which forbade the people from carrying weapons thus kobudo's foundation and karate grew from this sanction. the reason why ryukyu wasn't known as okinawa until modern times is because they were only incorporated during modern times, back then shimazu didn't want to explicitly announce they took control of the place to benefit from the trade and wanted to avoid confrontation with China which Ryukyu was a tributary of.

In that context, you might not be able to call Sai Japanese weapon at all. Okinawa was originally separate kingdom called Ryukyu and wasn't even part of Japan till late 19th Century. Since we don't call American Indian weapons American weapons, maybe we have to call sai ryukyu weapon?
@TeaSerpent6 жыл бұрын
The "Sai" is a traditional Chinese weapon called a Tiechi (Iron Ruler). It is not a farm tool, an Indian Trishula, a nail for fixing ox cart wheels to their axle, a pitchfork for hay or any of the other nonsense people talk about it. Unfortunately every single thing Megatron says about Okinawan Kobudo are things that are widely known to be false and do not have backing by any historical evidence. Although this seems to be a running theme with his videos, debunking other people and claiming to rely on historical evidence while simultaneously perpetuating the same type of ignorant pop culture falsehoods he claims to be correcting.
@TeaSerpent6 жыл бұрын
Anyway the name Sai is quite likely a recent name of at least I have only seen it used in 20th century documents. Prior to that the Okinawans used the traditional Chinese name of the weapon, just like they still do in much of Southeast Asia today where the weapon was widely introduced by various groups of Min and Yue language group speaking immigrants (Tekpi being a Minnan Language pronunciation of the local variant name used for the weapon in Southern Fujian and far southeast Guangdong). Likewise the Tonfa is also a traditional Chinese weapon known as a Guai (Crutch). The Nunchaku also being a Chinese weapon called Liang Jia Gun in Mandarin languages, Nunchaku being possibly derived from the Minnan language pronunciation of the name (Nung Cha Kun) The weapons ban he is talking about did happen, peasants were not allowed to carry weapons. It's the exact same law they had in both China and Japan and just like in China and Japan it was only haphazardly applied with weapons possession and even militia training by peasants being general ignored. As long as they did not hold anti government attitudes or rise to the levels of serious potential military threat it was often seen as a benefit to the country to have local village defense squads to keep order in rural areas where policing was difficult or even on existent. Many of these peasant militia organizations were also organized, encouraged or funded by local gentry. Village defense squads usually practiced with staffs, spears, and polearms. Some of the Okinawan village arts using these weapons are still being passed on in various "Mura Bo" (Village Staff) squad traditions today. Just like in Japan the Shizoku class could own all kinds of weapons. As basically all the major Okinawan martial arts come from Shizoku lines (just like all the major schools or Japanese koryu bujutsu) it is ridiculous to talk about people who could swords, spears, and bows and who were members of the ruling class having to walk around with farm tools. Especially as the weapons mentioned were actual weapons with no similarity to any farm tools.

When I trained with the Bunjinkan (and the amount of historical basis for the Bunjinkan is another matter, but at least we did work off of actual historical records for our techniques), we talked about the origins of the Ninja mask, and there was one. In theatre the Ninjas were often the baddies - and because they were supposed to be able to vanish and re-appear they put them in all black, including a hood, so that they would not be visible against the black background. They also moved props and the like, since they were already there and hard to see. As to the weapons, it's pretty clear that there is a huge conflation in western culture between Okinawan arts and the Ninja, despite the complete lack of historical connection - so thank you for the video - it's nice to see some historical context being brought into the discussion. As to the Bunjinkan, I would love to see your take on it someday, but I'm not sure I would wade into that swamp personally...

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't a specialized "ninja sword" be counter-productive, seeing as ninja (the real ones that is not the pop-culture ones) would want to remain undetected and wielding a weapon that only ninja use would expose one without a shadow of a dout.
@alexdhamp7 жыл бұрын
True...unless the sword was concealed somehow. Like...a cane or something? Not saying it happened, of course...just an idea how it COULD have been viable.
@SampoPaalanen7 жыл бұрын
That much is obvious, cane swords are/were their own thing though and IIRC not present in large in Medival Japan being more of a late renessance to early industrial era thing due to the demands for the blade. Still that's not what "Ninjato" is generally depicted as, it's generally depicted as Katana with a short straight blade and is worn openly either on the side or more often on the back. As Metatron pointed out some ninja were samurai and wouldn't have any reason for a special sword as they wear their swords openly and those ninja who weren't would want to avoid weapon that's essentially meant to be used only by members of the samurai class. Essentially nothing about the ninjato as generally depicted if you stop assuming that ninja were supernaturally capable and admit that they were just humans, well trained humans sure but still bound by the limitations of being mere mortals rather then demi-gods.

Always noticed most of the so called ninja tools in fiction are really things that would have been improvised as needed. Which make sense as spys operating during covert operations.. you would have to dress and equip appropriately for that role example would be playing a farmer you wouldn't have a full kit of combat gear so you don't stand out, but would have farming tools that would be easily turned into improvised weapons
@techoman85697 жыл бұрын
Most of the undercover operations were to spy and acquire info, for that reason most of the ninja tools were used to facilitate infiltration but not for combat, like the chain in the kama. But yes, if they fail its main rol; infiltration&spy; they would be forced to fight with wath they had in hand.

Just a quick question: is it possible that there could be ninja history that was lost? If they were the intelligence, it's possible that some may not want their presence/activities/tools known.
