What makes the ending of this movie along with the song so epic is the awesome skyline of Los Angeles as it's just turning morning when Riggs and Murtaugh have been kicking ass all night!

If you consider it is just getting dark when Riggs starts his revenge bender, and it's just getting daylight when he finally stops, you realize he's just been killing for 8-10 hours. What's REALLY badass is they've tried to kill him twice, failed, and though he's badly injured (We found out in the 3rd one he was almost critically injured when he brings up this event.), his response is to laugh it off.

Most people's favorite Beatle, with you: GEORGE HARRISON, this song is perfect, the first time I heard it was watching the final credits of this film, I fell in love with it instantly, even more so with this whole scene, showing the final dialogue of the main characters and the image coming out and showing LOS ANGELES in the background, dawning after a deadly battle in the night and early morning

Agreed, that's why I loved pre-internet times. You went into a movie completely cold, knowing almost nothing about it except the name of the movie and who was in it, and you just judged it on its merits. And then to hear this song at the end credits after a complete rollercoaster ride was pure icing on the cake.

The studio figured out through test screenings pretty quickly it would be a bad idea to kill Riggs at the end of LW2. Ca$h is king in Hollywood.

I accidentally came across the alternate ending and all I have to say is the one here is the better choice - not that the former is bad. Thank goodness for test screenings!.

The alternate ending has Kensit's character surviving and everyone attending a thanksgiving dinner together. The ending we see is the superior ending, and it was an on-the-fly thought of Donner to tell them to take off and get a full roll of aerial footage of the sunrise, just in case.
