As an African, Jamaicans are Jamaicans. They do have African descent but they have their own culture and traditions now that are unique to them. It is hard to claim something that you are so disconnected from. Same for AA’s. Also some Jamaicans originate from Asia and Europe etc. So you can’t classify all of them as African decent.

Why do people get so mad at Jamaicans identifying as Jamaican? Jamaican's are literally taught in school that we are African descendants. It's annoying that Jamaican's not allowed to be loud and proud about where they come from without the reminder of where we come from like we don't know. Say one positive thing about Jamaican culture and it's "but you're African." I feel like it's used as a negative dig also instead of a positive. I’m Jamaican. Born and raised and most of the people I interact with, in and out of school, don’t want to be associated with Africa. Most Jamaicans think being African is below them and that has to do with how Africa and Africans are being presented to us. Jamaican people think Africans are poor, black magic believers etc. Rastafarians and the maroons do uplift the view of Africans and they do not hesitate to identify as Africans. We are taught in school about our heritage but that’s it. Most Jamaicans neglect the teachings of Marcus Garvey and other pan Africanists. They literally look down on Africans. Yes there are exceptions. I’m a proud Jamaican. And I also identify as African. I may not know exactly where I’m from but I still see myself and other Afro-Jamaicans and as Africans.

Jamaicans get offended when you refer to them as Africans (and you can see that in most of the comments). I’m from Trelawny btw. Went to Westwood High School. I’m an Sub-Saharan African History, and a public health major in college. Yes we have our own national identity and as Jamaicans we are a very proud people. But look at the difference between how a Jamaican national view their relationship with Africa vs. someone from the Rastafari movement, a Pan Africanist, and the maroons. It’s very different. In the US and countries like it, race, culture and ethnicity are discussed heavily compared to Jamaica and other Caribbean countries. One reason being that the cultural, racial and ethnic differences are on a much wider scale in the US. Yes Jamaica says out of many one people, but majority of us here have a similar cultural or racial background.

Majority of us Jamaicans we acknowledge that our ancestors are from Africa...however, just our own motto tells us "OUT OF MANY, ONE PEOPLE🇯🇲" some of us have ancestors who are not entirely from Africa but also East India, Germany, China etc. So that's something to consider when some people deny not being from Africa. JAMAICA is a mosaic of ethnicity, cultural differences etc. So to generalize that a Jamaican whose ancestors are from europe as being from africa is not entirely true.

When Jamaicans are referring to being Jamaicans they are referring to their ethnicity (culture) and nationality. The Jamaican Culture just like other Caribbean islands' and West Indian culture has accents of African culture but is not entirely made up of African culture but rather a mixture of the many ethnicities that was brought to those islands and mainlands. I'm Afro Guyanese meaning I have African heritage and am proud but culturally I'm not African but Guyanese due to being raised in and practice the Guyanese culture the same applies with Jamaicans.

As a Jamaican, most Jamaican's know it's pretty damn obvious our ancestors were from Africa( taught from primary school). Like most black people in the Caribbean, same with Asians. But as an island, our culture is a melting pot of other ethnicities. So the majority of them would say they come from Ghana and Nigeria. But you have to remember that these countries had the ports where the slave ships would sail from. So essentially slaves could have been taken from any African nation, but ultimately they were brought to the west coast to start the journey. That's why when you go to Jamaica you can see the mixture of Africans

As an African American, I felt like the Jamaican question was awkward. It’s the same concept with AA. We’re from Africa but where in Africa ? We don’t know so we just say it to say it… but we weren’t raise with African culture, we’ve never had African cuisine. We don’t party to African music, and we aren’t taught a lot of African history in school. I'll give my perspective as an east African. I feel like the Africans who want Jamaicans/Caribbean people to identify as African are just insecure in their own "africanness". Although Africa is a continent with numerous cultures, east Africa is very different from north Africa but, it is often regarded as one type of mixed culture. And if you ask outsiders about "African culture" often, the first image that will pop into their heads will be starving children, poverty, poor healthcare and education system, disease e.t.c. But if questioned about Caribbean culture,such images do not arise. There are more positive images, beautiful beaches, friendly welcoming people, music running through the streets etc. So I think some Africans in turn have some kind of insecurity or jealousy. "Those Caribbeans think they are better than us cause the white people said so, no they are just as black as us. They should remember that they are just as low as us cause they also came from Africa." That's kind of the feelings of the ones who want you to identify as African. Don't take it too seriously though, look at it as an appreciation of your culture. They envy your culture so bad they want you to throw it away so you can "be on their low level".

Also Jamaicans are known for their athletic abilities in sprinting. There aren't any African countries that are well known for sprinting (Kenya and Ethiopia are known for long distance though, but it is well known that sprints are more watched than long distance)so that is another source of jealousy for some Africans.

I’m confused. Most Jamaicans I’ve met are really cool and very proud to be Jamaican but also proud of their ancestry. I’ve never heard a Jamaican deny being of African decent. @@naomibeautymind6226 With white people they are kind of like at the top of the racial hierarchy so people don't really ask them to identify with Europe because whether they are Australian, European or American they are still white, meaning that either way they will still be at the top. But with black people, the ones who are outside of Africa, you'll find many Africans telling Caribbeans to identify with Africa. Reason being even though black people are at the bottom of the racial hierarchy, there is still are hierarchy within that in terms of "culture". White people view the Caribbean in a more positive light than Africa. With the Caribbean the first image that pops up into their heads is visiting lovely beaches, lovely people, beautiful music etc. But with Africa it's poverty, diseases, poor healthcare etc. So I think some Africans are jealous that you guys are viewed in a more positive light, so they want you to identify with Africa to remind you that "No you are still African, don't go thinking you are different from us and better because the colonizer said so." It's something like that. (I'm east African by the way, Kenyan to be exact)

I don't understand the statement of African Americans have no idea where they're from/origin bit when their foundation is the same as Jamaicans? If you ask a Jamaican in Jamaica where they're from, they will say a city/town in Jamaica. If you ask a AA where they're from they will say a city/state in the US- how does that differ from Jamaicans or any other Black group in the Americas? Ultimately, Black People based on dna/genetics are African but many are not African by culture/heritage. on another note- Beyonce is an Icon on her way to becoming a legend. As a West Indian who's lived my entire life in the Caribbean and lives in Jamaica....being from our respective islands is our culture, it is what we know - that culture is based on our country's personal experience as colony, our people are products of our ancestors ; Africans AND other countries. Being from a Caribbean island is not the same as your parents being directly from an African nation. We have similarities but we aren't the same. There are Jamaican's and West Indies who have no African heritage at all and many who do but we are not African, we are West Indian.

Some people have a very warped perception of black folks in the U.S. Some are aware- but may feel as though their “home country” was colonized- yet they know where they are from. But they forget-the U.S was once a part of Britain:13 colonies- and slavery occurred there as well( and all over the world). Lots of people don’t know due to no fault of their own-only certain facts were savored via oral traditions, and there are certain parts of history that some governments/institutions would prefer to keep hidden. Nella not all Jamaican have African ancestors. Every Jamaican that are black are intact with their African roots and our history about slaves are thought in school. Jamaica is a nationality not a race so When ask a Jamaican or any Caribbean country what they are they are going to say their nationality because they didn't up focusing on races saying african Jamaican, indian Jamaican, Chinese Jamaican. My opinion before watching the video based off of title: As a born Jamaican every year growing up we learned that all of our ancestors are from Africa, West Africa if I remember correctly.

Jamaicans are African by descent could say that about any carribean country tbh, at the end of the day Jamaicans have their own culture etc.

I’m Jamaican and mixed with Chinese(from great grandpa?), and I know a lot of Caribbeans who are mixed. I’m not saying we’re sooo different, but I think there’s a lot of us who aren’t fully African the same way people from Africa are. Also Jamaica has its own culture that we’re proud of. That being said we LOVEEE Africa anyways! lol. (Also my nationality is Canadian too so I don’t even know what to say when one asks me where I’m from lmao😭)

im caribbean (from dominica, barbados and guyana) & my dad is mixed race, his mum is indo guyanese. im obvi not gonna be fully african. almost all caribbeans are mixed in some way. it's hard for us to claim something we don't know about honestly. like i have multiple cultures that im proud of, why is that a problem? + if i were u, id just say "im jamaican canadian" lol

Personally I dont think they have to call themselves Africans, because lets face it - they aren't. Their ancestors were Africans from West and Central Africa
