I have been looking for a new hobby and have always LOVED watching people chainsaw carve at the yearly fairs, so I figured I would try it...so...lets carve a bear! I would love to do more content like this as I learn, so definitely let me know below in the comments if this is content you guys want to see! I can see some fun giveaways happening in the future!
This bear reminds me so much of a cute little gummy bear, he is far from perfect but I'm so happy with how he came out!
New Patreon available for anyone who wishes to support me a little extra :)

As always,
Thanks for watching!

It's Great to see your older carvings compared to your new ones. You have really progressed well in a year's time. I'm new to chainsaw carving, I've whittled hundreds of little projects and it was the natural progression I suppose. Keep going, you are doing great.

For your one year anniversary I’m rewatching this for I don’t know how many times now, but It never gets old to me Tay! The birth of a genius chainsaw carver in the works here. This won’t be the last time I replay this. Your roots as a carver began here with just the basics of carving tools. You’ve come a long way in just a year cutie! AMAZING!!! 💛

Thank you sooo much for posting this video. I am thinking about getting into this activity--I am 60 at end of teaching career and have experience with chainsaws but have that gnawing feeling of "what shoud I do with my life" thing. I am impressed that you make these cuts with a regular chainsaw bar. Seems like most of the artists use the dime or quarter tip carving bar in their videos. I'll stop rambling. I look forward to seeing more videos. Good luck and really nice work. Take care.

When I was watching, it occurred to me that you could make a full bear-themed large outdoor chess set. You could have bear kings and queens and knights, etc.. Probably wouldn;t be worth the huge amount of work, but it would be very cool.

@@TayMarie23 yes, a jamhorse is on my list. That, and a saw with a dime bar. Bought a stihl 180 c b e, two weeks ago. Love it! Never used a saw or carved anything before. At 63, I'm invested in this. Due to recent health issues I'm on SSI and hope to generate some extra income. Was laid up in bed pretty much for 16 months after high blood pressure caused me to have a brain bleed (minor type of stroke) and carving now has me up at six a.m., ready to start my day- dragging logs our of the woods, etc. Carving more than likely saved my life because it got me moving. I talked about chainsaw art for decades and now is my chance. Kids, grandkids and friends are so supportive, so i am luckier than most. Still, my learning takes great effort. I study hundreds of bear pics and videos. Just learning hair patterns alone is a great challenge. Woke the whole family up early this morning with my chainsaw. Oooops! Also learned- bears don't have whiskers! Good luck with your new venture. So encouraging to see others digging in and putting in the work. Unfortunately, there are no short cuts after learning the bear basics... Godspeed.

Greetings from England. Congratulations on your work, you've got talent! Here is a challenge for you. I want to see you carve the head of Beetlejuice from the Howard Stern show. Due to Beetlejuice's microcephaly it's not easy to get the proportions right. I'm a Stonemason and have done a few attempts in modelling clay before working on stone and it's tough. @@TayMarie23 You're right, people are hard, especially people with tiny heads! But imagine the scope of your work when you've mastered carving people. Just think of the demand and the price you could charge when you have that skill locked down. Keep the faith, work through the pain and focus on carving Beetlejuice. You'll find that if you can carve him you can carve any human. (Beetlejuice is more of a God than a human in my opinion).

I can't believe this was one of your first carves,....and only a year ago?!!!Soooo cute! And to top it off, I've already seen the giant bear you carved. Your art just blows my mind, it's so beautiful, even your first carves! So, watching this,... Can I carve with just the stock bar and chain my saw came with? I have the Stihl MSA 70. Also, I do have a small 4" angle grinder, but I need to get the wrench(es) for it. I was thinking what to get for it,... probably start with sanding disks like you used here. Do you find you use it much? If so, do you have any favorite attachments?
@TayMarie23
@TayMarie23 3 ай бұрын
At this point closer to a year and a half, but yet this was my 5th carving 🐻 You can definitely use the stock bar and chain, I carved this bear with an 18” stock bar. You might want a carving bar in the future but I would definitely start without one and learn the ropes first! And for the angle grinder, I now have a Saburrtooth sanding disc on it but yes you want to get your soon 40-120 grit flap sanding discs, you will use them a lot !

But first things first. I'm always taking notes as I watch videos. Thanks for commenting back, I appreciate your time and experience.💯

Your neeest subscribers. Are you really new to chainsaw carving at this point? You definitely have a gift. Saw another video of yours a year later that was amazing! I’m a woodworker and was thinking of advancing skill set to carving. I’d like to do a simple project like a fire hydrant. Looking forward to what you do next!

I feel like we are always beginners, regardless of what stage we are at! This is a hobby where you constantly learn new things, it never ends! I bet you most master carvers will tell you they still learn things on the daily doing this! This is a wonderful hobby/job, it engages and exercises both the mind and the body! 😁

Can you run a dime tip on an electric saw? I have heard it’s not good because electric only runs at full throttle and you shouldn’t run a dime tip at full throttle? But I honestly know nothing, learning as I go lol! I was looking at getting a quarter tip so I don’t have to change the sprocket, but I’m definitely open to suggestions!

What was the clear coat in the 5 gallon bucket you put on him? Amazing work your a natural.
@TayMarie23
@TayMarie23 Жыл бұрын
Hii! Thank you for the kind words! I don’t use that clear coat anymore, but it was a transparent lightly tinted fence stain and weather-proofer! I recently switched over to all oil based products for my carvings, but I was using fence and deck stains prior to that! Honestly, they were working great and there is no specific reason I changed to oil other than just listening to some of the advice I have been given from other carvers :) I now use Australian timber oil and TWP 1500 for all of my carvings (in various colors) both of which I would recommend for ANY wood project, fence, or deck - they are both AMAZING!

@TayMarie23

This was my first ever carving video 💕 This was probably a 14-16” diameter log about 16-18” tall! I hope you enjoy this amazing art form! I would recommend starting with trees, they are a great way to learn the basic cuts before jumping into a bear! Bears are so fun though!

Awesome work, I'm new to this too and love it, I've been using chainsaw, dremel flexshat and Wen makes a great cheap dremel up to 35000 rpm, it was 24.99 and has lasted 3-4 times longer than dremel brand js, a cheap die grinder for really digging out wood with a kutzall tear drop burr 1/4 for the die grinder and a 1/8 for the dremel, I use those two burrs more than any others but if you decide to get some I can show ya what I got that's working great right now, your a natural BTW, I've only made a bear and owl with the chainsaw last fall then winter hit so only doingng power tools inside 😅 where its been warm, can't wait for spring weather to get out there chainsaw carving this week, also check out Jordy Johnson carving fusion and Ryan Cook, just carve rob, I've been learning tons watchingng them guys, Carve deep! Go's bless keep em coming
