Still watching this one because I like watching people do fabrication work. The welding sounds like frying eggs which I understand is the right sound!!!

Its tricky welding spring steel. You either have to heat the whole spring to soften it or really burn it in HOT HOT HOT and hope the welds don't crack as it cools. Yes, the frying sound is what you are listening for....makes a fella hungry for bacon and eggs. LOL

Good idea making fender well with leaf spring. Will definitely keep in mind for future.
@tractorman4461

The main thing to remember is it is hardened spring steel and a low temp weld is not going to penetrate. You gotta burn it in HOT....or like another viewer suggested, heat them with a forge or rosebud torch and let cool first.

Good day to you. That 84A. Is a mechanical jack used around underground track. It is used to help rerail locomotives and rail cars underground. The 84A is 5 tons but is used by rail crew to fix rail underground. I have 2 model 17 and when released it drops the load instantly which makes it very scary. I have sold a fews dozen of the 84A over the year in my old job before retirement (my new job). We all call them track jacks but are mostly used to rerail and repair (lift loci’s or change wheels on ore cars or flat cars. Selling rail and rail supplies was one of my favourite things and what was even more fun was having underground engineer call on me to solve there problems. Very smart people but not always practical. I must be careful because my son in an electrical engineer and I told him you are very smart but listen to people around you an learn the practical way of doing things not just the book way. I thing he understood what I was talking about. Sorry for going on so long. Have a nice day

Now this is an interesting comment filled with some cool stuff Richard. I seldom get to know much about the lives of my internet friends. I appreciate it. I have a cousin that was BIG into collecting RR items. I think he had at least 5 of everything associated with RR's when he passed....barns full and his whole home was RR themed collectibles. Thing of it is, he never sold a thing. One of the towns close to me has a RR repair depot. They rebuild virtually anything that rolls on the rails there. I really enjoyed working on their heating systems because I could nose around their shop area while working !! Have a great day and Happy Thanksgiving my retired friend and thanks again for the awesome and loaded comment !!

Looks good. You may have induced enough heat in that spring steel to reduce the actual spring effect. Might want to check those welds for cracking after a couple loads on the trailer. I don't recall the rules in the regulations for structural steel code work but, I remember when we built pressure vessels, if you cut a hole in the vessel you had to replace that removed metal with at least an equal amount of metal. That's why there are reinforcing pads around nozzles on tanks. If the structural steel rules are the same, you have accomplished that with the size and thickness of the steel you installed. BTW I always seem to be low on Oxy/Acet. whenever I start a big job or a quick job!!! 👍👍👍

Well, there are a LOT of requirements I do not know about fabrication. That's why most of the stuff that come out of here is probably heavier than they need to be. But then, I usually build out of the scrap pile too. LOL. I am lucky insofar as a good buddy is the local welding gasses supplier. But he is only allowed to take in specific brands of tanks. I do have two sets of them in his brand but I also have other auction/estate sale purchases that he is not allowed to exchange. Unfortunately my argon/co2 is almost empty as well. )-: None of it is cheap any more.

Beautiful fabrication and welding skills . I want to learn more and become a better welder. I am good at oxygen acetylene gas welding but not so good with tig or mig yet. I like that old school mechanical jack! You are a Jack of all yourself haha
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 Жыл бұрын
I tell ya Rob, I have a pile of all kinds of those jacks. And the crazy thing is I use virtually ALL of them at one time or another. They are so good for picking up my old tractors because they are so tall. No blocking on top of floor jacks and stuff like that. I have a short and squatty one that I used for lifting the Toyota forklift...and it had a 1500 lb counterweight too !! Buy a cheap MIG from HFreight and weld away....The most convenient is the ones that use flux cored wire and not the shielding gas. Some, like my little Miller uses either by moving two jumpers.

Looks good buddy. You can heat those springs with your torch to an orange color and let them cool down naturally. That should normalize them with no problem. I do that on old disc blades when I weld to them and works good. Happy Thanksgiving!

If I had enough coal, that's what I'd have done in the forge. But it is kinda hard to find around here so I'm hoping burning it in as hot as I did will do the trick. Time will tell. If not, the welds will crack at the point of contact with the spring steel. I hope you holiday was a Happy one as well Russ.

That Simplex jack is probably a house jack but is not a track jack. A track jack is capable of being "shot" or tripped under load to drop the load. I have one like yours there. A piece of hardwood or wood shingle between the jack and the load will go a long way to keep the jack from slipping from metal-on-metal contact. Cheers.
@tractorman4461

I slip a patch of inner tube between 'em and that gives good grip too. I use the RR Jack term for all the old jacks of this style I have. But I DO have one my dad got from the Mo Pacific RR back in the 40's but it is bent and is somewhat limited in use. But we used it dozens of times on the farm lifting machinery or tractors. I know an old guy that uses these style jacks horizontally to move or shift bank vaults into place during construction...and he calls them 'vault jacks'. LOL. Thanks Roy for chiming in with more input.

So, this is a test to see if I can type a reply without going back over it to correct the spelling of each word. It's working now,.... apparently :) Good 'cut outs' on your trailer wheels, I think. Sure will save your tires I'd imagine.

Yessir, the 12,000 Lb. APEX is a great change for me and I LOVE the synthetic rope instead of the kinky-cable. Guys like us that work on rusty stuff always seem to have trouble with computers. LOL. I like this set up now because I can start using up all the much wider 10 ply tires on this thing. I could squeeze a 235 in with a good deal of effort, but nothing any wider. But that is now a thing of the past !! And if by some quirk, the bed does bounce into contact with a heavy load, they will not be shredded !! I hope..... (-; Good luck with the new c'pooter Reg.

Well that particular one is mighty old. The metal in the old ones were a bit superior to the near pewter-like materials of some of them today !! A cousin just gifted me an even older one this week. It's the old wooden one with the notches you move the pad to and lock in place for adjustment, then move the acme threaded handle to tighten. So it will live on the wall and not abused like this one here. LOL. Thanks for the compliment on the fenderwell adaption.

I have a ton of them...well not really, but this is only one of them. The coolest one I think is actually a truck jack. For the life of me I cannot remember what brand it is...but I THINK its a Pierce Arrow truck jack. Probably close to 100 years old too. Its the same basic style as the Simplex here and I want to say its an 8 ton capacity. As far as rebuilding one Mike, the only one I have that has ever had a problem is one from the MO Pacific RR my dad got back in the 40's or 50's. It has a bent riser, but we used it like that for years out on the farm. Those things were built for longevity !! All cast iron or cast steel and even the pawls on the risers show little to no wear. Thanks for the holiday visit my friend.
