It's very subtle but effective; even you guys noticed it: "Is Hinata even on the court?". Ever since set 1, Matsukawa (Seijoh 3rd yr who looks like Iwa-chan) taught his team a technique called "filtering". It's where 1-2 blockers cover Hinata's cross spike and leave an opening for a straight spike. Hinata has no choice but hit a straight spike/line shot, usually towards a waiting receiver. That's why Hinata hasn't been prominent since the 1st ep of this rematch. Last ep, Hinata even said "I rotated to the back w/o getting a single spike in" This filtering method will be repeated until the end of the series.

One thing to mention about Yamagucci and Tsuki - they are a perfect duo. Probably the most efficient volleyball system is Serve and Block (Powerful serves that either score or throw opponent into dissaray, then you stuff them when they crumble). Its really nicely shown too - its not that Yamagucci can score on every serve, its that when he cant score, Tsuki uses the chaos to keep the momentum.

If you pay attention to the mid episode serve scene, we get Yamaguchi serving. And he does a jump float serve. From that perspective you can see how the ball comes differently compared to any other serve. So cool.

As a volleyball fan, I appreciate how you break down the game and the episode! Additionally, the reason Hinata was replaced by Yamaguchi is that he is a middle blocker, and they are usually positioned in the front line. In that rotation, he cannot execute the quick attack in front because he is in the back row. He can still attack, but it will be a back-row approach. I also like how Ange called the first serve of Yamaguchi to drop, even though it was visually going out! That's how a jump floater works, it's unpredictable because it has no spin. The best way to receive that serve is with an overhand receive (like tossing), similar to what the Seijoh team did. Looking forward to more reactions!

Haikyuu is seriously one of the best sports anime/manga. Sure there's a lot of overexaggerated bits as typical with anime/manga but they do a good job of getting the whole team dynamics of the game and how effort and dedication translates to skill, not just what you're born with (like other shows often highlight). One of the only shows that gets me just as excited to watch each play as a real sports game.
