Probably bc he's in the opposing team aka the 'enemy's of the main characters. For me, Ushijima and Tendou is my favourite duo. The second duo is from of the season 4 bc of their relatable dynamic (I don't want to mention it bc of spoiler alert).

Actually, everyone who react to Haikyuu always misunderstood Ushijima stament at 13:48 calling it arrogance or whatever, but actually he is talking about the arrogance of Hinata (Who doesn't have any basic skills in volleyball, don't know how to receive without hitting his face or body, or serve, neither block, that is his position, he is just athletic and a point scorer for the team none the less), and go and say to a youth national player who, stroke his ego by saying facts (a little harsher, could be better, but Ushijima doen't have a filter just like Kageyama as well), about teams that couldn't defeat seijoh, and be upset and say that he would defeat him, that is what he doesn't like about Hinata. Hinata is so full about himself, but he wouldn't be a start player if it weren't for Kageyama's sets.

Actually Ushijima doesn't know the extent of Hinata's ability at this point, sure this is true once they get passed the third set and Ushijima addresses Hinata. But I think Ushijima is mostly talking about how some first year who he's never heard of in middle school that couldn't even beat Seijoh at Inter High is talking about beating him. There is no basis for Hinata believing that at least in Ushijima's mind and in fact the whole prefecture other than Seijoh doesn't think they could beat Shiratorizawa, so Hinata believing it wholeheartedly is off-putting or even creepy.

This episode basically introduced you guys to my second favorite character in the series, Tendo (red hair). Ushiwaka is a character that you learn to love with time. He looks kind of rude, but in fact he is just totally focused in his objective, that is been the greatest player in Japan. So he doesnt have much time with childish quotes like " I'll be the best" or "friendship power!". He is a complex character and I love him because of his focus and dedication. Everyone knows him and he is the monumentum of volleyball in high school level, he is goat and point

I just don't think it would have ever worked out--Shiratorizawa is built to be centered around their Spiker and especially with Oikawa and Ushijima both being third years (and vying for the captain spot), Oikawa would have been way too resentful and could have easily given in to his sense of inferiority...I think even if he had won in those circumstances, it would not have been satisfying to him. If nothing else, he is self aware enough to know how petty he can be.
