Thanks. We have a currently very viable nest box "full" of Tree Bumblebees and we were wondering what we will find when they leave. Your video has given me a good sense of what to expect.

Thank you for this very informative video. I live in Washington State, USA and have a colony of what I think are tree bees nesting in a bird box on our patio porch. I am a big proponent of saving the bees so we are all living together in harmony at least as of now. There is more activity now then there was when we first noticed them coming and going. Unfortunately our little porch is not big and the bees are always about 3-4 feet away from us when we are sitting outside. So far, everyone is living together in harmony! Their nest is huge! The bird box is almost completely full and I cannot imagine how they are getting around in there! Anyway, thank you for this lovely video. Cheers and good health to you..

Wax moths are of no danger to a healthy bee hive. I learnt this today

We have had tree bumblebees nesting in our bird box here in Ottery St Mary, Devon. First time we have had them. Poor blue tits didn't stand a chance of nesting in it!
@Calastein2 жыл бұрын
If you clean the nest out each year you won’t have tree bumbles as they generally are attracted to the smell of the old nest. However, having tree bumblebees is amazing and the blue tits will find somewhere else. Of course, you could just put another nest box up and keep that one clean for birds? :) x

Very interesting, i have never seen a Bumblebee nest so close from the inside before. I did know about the Tree Bumblebees in the UK from the latest book of Dave Goulson, called "The Garden Jungle" which i'm currently reading. I can recommend this book to anyone, Goulson is very dedicated to battling pesticides and preserving wildlife. Like you really :-). I saw a lecture of him a couple of years ago in Amsterdam and have bought all his books since then. His chapter about the way we are using all these pesticides make you shudder if you read it. Will we ever learn?
@Calastein5 жыл бұрын
Grote Griezel Hi M I have that book on my reading list. Totally agree about pesticides, the sad thing about humans is we learn slowly and technology and greed are running rampant in this world. The only hope we have is to all club together. xxxx

Is it a good idea to allow this type of bee right above my front door? Am I underestimating the size of which a hive can grow? I want to leave them in place but I fear the vibrations may set them off. Especially since I store the bins under them.... or they store themselves over my bins 😂 any advice would be much appreciated. They are in the wall so to speak. But I also read here somebody is already living in harmony with some bees in a very similar condition. So I have hopes

hi, :) The only thing I would say is that other than on occasion if bothered tree-bumbles can get a bit feisty if they annoy them enough and there is a reasonable chance that now and then one might come in your home and then you’ll need to catch them and put them out. However, if it’s reasonably far away from your door and you’re happy with that then I wouldn’t necessarily worry about the size of the hive, imo it wouldn’t be large enough to cause a swarm like affect like wasps for instance. personally if I had any bumblebees in my wall above my door I would be ecstatic. ❤️🐝❤️🐝❤️

It started when I spotted the "lekking clouds. Realising that they have been my neighbor's already for a very long time. a few months at least. Ive just tested to try hear them before they start on their morning trip out. it sounds like a large hive and if I can even hear them inside the wall at least a meter away from the entry point. They are literally inside my walls. And loud when I notice them all the little buzzes and peeps and drones. Combined they sound like a dodgy fridge 🤣 Well it's tough as you see the entry point is directly above my door like I mean 5-10 inches so I am very concerned I'm going to annoy them. If they are this chill to live in my wall next to my door. On a busy road. Where strangers knock on said door. It's just mind boggling. They must be very used to urban life. I also have a neighbor's door two metres in front of mine! So there is another curveball to the mix. P.S I've learnt so much about bees the past 2 days and become rather stricken by them. Also I'm not sure what it is but they love a plant with a hanging flower literally a short buzz from the nest. Very typical of tree bumbles apparently!

The "eggs" are cells, used for storing pollen and nectar, and for rearing new bees. Tree bumblebees often have a bald patch on the thorax- their fur is more sparse than some bumblebee species.

Please understand, I am most certainly ‘in it for the bees’! This was an old empty nest that I thought people would find interesting if I opened it. There were no live bees at all, the queens had long since moved on. if it’s not too much to ask could you remove the thumbs down.:) xx
