18:24 Regardless of how many people engaged with that brilliant mechanic, it pulled together so many disconnected mechanics and incentivized the player to get better at the game. Normally, people don't care about how many rings they finish a level with, but the Chao Garden turns them into currency. People rarely care about replaying levels they didn't find fun the first time, but if it only takes collecting 100 rings to get an additional emblem to improve the Chao Garden store, surely it won't be that bad. Getting A ranks usually is only something that hardcore fans care about when 100%ing a game, but you get extra emblems for A ranks, and replaying levels over and over gets you more rings and animals so even your failed attempts at A ranks feel like you're making progress in some way. Good game design is good regardless of if casual or hardcore players get invested.

Branching paths smooth controls and fast paced, that is LITERALLY the 3D segments of sonic generations, aka, the reason to play sonic generations. Some of the best 3D sonic level design in the series and glad to see it’s the same in this game. Seriously replay generations for its 3D levels they are superb

I just finished 100%'ing this game and this is now my favorite game in the Sonic series. I love that there is always something you can be doing to improve your time and score. It feels like a game designed for speedrunners, it just needs a speedrun mode that cuts out the cutscenes. Also this game is a bit forgiving with the S ranks as you can make mistakes or take slightly slower paths and still get S. There are a few exceptions but those are usually late game challenges. It helps keep the game fun instead of frustrating, and there are leaderboards for people that want a perfect run. I, somewhat recently, played through Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) and I want to mention. That game is considered an edgy game but it's only edgy if you choose to be evil. With one exception, in the completely good path there is one line that comes out of nowhere. "This is like taking candy from a baby, which is fine by me." I know what they meant by it but the delivery is completely off. (I know this feels like it's coming out of nowhere but I want to say it somewhere and when better than this game.) For some reason they have a gap in the stage select that makes it look like there will be an act 3 but (to my knowledge) there isn't any stage with an act 3. Maybe it's there if they want to add DLC later. I am probably the only person that didn't like the Chao Garden. I think it's a fine addition for a break between levels but the fact it's required for 100% completion makes me despise it. If you want to be optimal about it you have to stop in between every level so you don't waste resources but I just want to get back in and try again. Not stop and go take care of a Chao for a few minutes between tries for A rank. One weird control gimmick with Sonic games is the fastest way to stop and turn around is to let go of the control stick for a moment, then push the stick in the direction you want to go. If you just push the stick in the opposite direction your character will step forward while turning instead. I recommend talking to the NPC's as often as possible because they have missable dialogue and some of it is cool world building or funny lines. They also always have 3 lines for every new set of dialogue. Sonic games are all about replaying and learning the levels, hence why there are ranks to encourage replaying them. You aren't expected to react to every jump or secret on the first playthrough but they are there so when you return you can feel great when you do get them.

Now people can finally stop asking about this in the comments =) While I appreciate the refresher, especially since I never played Shadow the Hedgehog, that was just about the blandest narration I've ever heard. Well, they're starting off strong with the SA2 callbacks. I appreciate the 3D explorable hub. I'm in the "bring back the Chao Garden" group, too! Thank you, Casey, for reviving my trauma with the phrase "Brave Little Toaster." Also, I know Shadow's whole schtick is "edgelord turned up to eleven," but he sure is surprisingly okay with having his body invaded by energy from the evil alien overlord that was his DNA donor and tried to control him in the past. Yeah these levels are clearly standard Sonic design meant to be replayed to get all the stuff and take alternate routes for faster times. Ian really is trying to put that Applebee's bit into every current series, huh?
