@@SplashyCannonBall Don’t use a scraper on that surface. After wiping off the excess coolant and engine oil if and ONLY IF there is any excess gasket material remaining, use 3M 07447 scotch brite pads to gently clean the surface. Don’t bare down to hard while cleaning the surface. As far as fluid in the holes, I have a mighty vac suction machine I use at the shop but if you’re working at home a simple turkey baster would work to suck out the excess fluid. I've always used a thread chase and oiled bolts, especially when doing cylinder heads or exhaust manifolds. it's weird that you say look it up when I don't think you've ever looked it up yourself. top results all say something like this "The torque values specified by the engine manufacturer are typically based on oiled threads and fasteners - not dry fasteners."

Using lubricant on bolts increases the torque even when using a torque wrench. Some cars call for lubricating the head bolts others do not.
@dredennis113
@dredennis113 Жыл бұрын
A lot of manufacturers recommended TTY headbolts to be dry. While some will say to lube to prevent false readings. And it’s usually due to excessive lubricants. A blind threaded hole with a bolt that is coated in oil will read torque wrong. That oil has to go somewhere. You can’t compress a liquid. Same reason you should clean and blow out threads to prevent inaccurate reading.

how do you feel about the torque value with a small 3 inch extension while torquing head studs/bolts? I'm a diy car guy who does his own jobs and last head job I did I had to use a small ext to even torque the studs and it made me think about the physics behind adding more leverage thus changing the torque very slightly. what's your experience say about this? After cleaning out the thread hand tighten, then start at least three cycles of torquing with a torque wrench stepping up in torque in each cycle.

Its simple my guy. The small impact used for speed installation of the bolts (not torqueing) and the bolts are not one time use, meaning you inspect them, if they ok re use them. @@J2A61 Yes, you make valid points my guy. But when you limited to what parts you are allowed to replace with a job, that is what you do. Fact is, ive never had a reason to replace head bolts in over 20 years with no problems. These are things that are taught in trade school for sure. I usually just take my air blow gun wrap a rag around the barrel and blow the crap out of the threads. Then wipe off the top of the deck. And with factory gaskets they have that coating to assist with sealing so the spray in gasket tack is not needed. Can't tell you how many of those 3.6 vvt heads I have removed in my day...

More often than not I install them as is unless I encounter extreme applications where gaskets are poorly engineered or the engine may be abused. In those cases I would use a copper coating or rtv. However, be forewarned that I do not endorse this as it can cause significant damage to the engine if not properly applied or it's excessively abused. For standard applications do not do this.

Many Ford engines have that same cooling channel, some call it a slit, cut across the top of the block between two adjacent cylinders. It's a poor design and it often damages the head gasket and causes coolant intrusion. Those engines need to have the short blocks replaced with new ones with a new design that has a hole drilled down across the block. That's the only way to make the problem go away permanently. I'm not sure what engine this is in the video but I'd be leery of any engine that uses that slit.

Clean the cylinder head very good don't use anything it's a multi-layered steel gasket, also you should not use the screw gun or impact gun on those bolts I know you're not using it to tighten them down but when you spend them in that fast you heat up the aluminum threads and that is not good use an extension with the socket and take your time and do it by hand, but if it's not your car I guess you don't give a s*** and you keep doing what you do !!

As long as the surfaces are completely clean and then wipe down with alcohol and a rag you should never ever put any type of adhesive or sealant on a head gasket. In this industry that's considered taboo.

Compressed air. Gets ALL fluid or debris out of the head bolt holes. Nothing on block or head gasket, not a drop of anything. Follow DEALER spec on torque & pattern of tightening. Maybe a drop (or 2) of oil, on bottom 4 threads of each head bolt. 😎👍

Do you go by the factory torque specs. and procedure and how many block threads have stripped with you or your compadre's at either of the shops you work at? One of my friends that works at a local Chrysler dealer says he simply pulls them down to 100 ft. lbs. and hasn't had any problems. I have had to put thread inserts in two blocks in the recent past. I think they had been over heated a little too much.
