this 1958 vw bug that was towed from california to newHampshire 35 years ago, at the time they were trying to get it switched over from 6 volt to 12 volt but never got it to work, after leaving it in the woods for 35 years we came along and dragged it out. now lets see what the weather, critters and time has left for us to work with.

I was 16 yrs old back in 95 mowing lawns, when one of the houses I was mowing was preparing to junk a 70 bug. The lady told me the wrecker was giving her $200 to haul it away. I told her I would mow her lawn for the rest of the season for free if she gave it to me. She agreed so I through what gas I had left in my gas can for the lawn mower, spent 15 minutes tinkering and she fired up. After I got home I told my dad and we went back to drive it home. I miss that bug. No heat and no a/c, but those seats were infamous for robbing my friends of the change in their pockets which came in handy when I needed 85 cents to get home and it didn't matter where I was hahaha. I never did clock the mpg on her but it never mattered anyway.

My 66 got 22 mpg about the same MPG as my 5.7L Hemi Challenger when I drive it in eco mode. Back in the early 70s I remember a early 70's gas war with 22 cents a gallon gas and did a fill up from an almost empty tank for $2.

I miss my '72 Super Beetle, I wish I had taken the money and the car instead of having it totaled. It sold at the auction for $1,300, it had side damage but I had put new tires, new front struts, oil pump and filter (aftermarket) and I was in the process of finding a way to fix the fuel gauge. I loved working on it, I loved driving it, I loved everything about my bug and now I wish I had another one and the time to fix it!!!

@@1pcfred Thankfully, wolves are being reintroduced as someone finally realized they're part of the ecological circle. No matter how hard you try, you can't stop farmers shooting animals they consider pests. When I visited Grand Canyon some years back, I took a horse ride down deep into the canyon. The Havasupai guide told me you only really need to worry about rattlers and scorpions. More the scorpions than the rattlers. Thankfully, I didn't see either one while I was there. In the parks, wolves are doing well now. Outside of the park's protection they still suffer losses, shamefully.

Excited to see what you can do to resurrect this beauty. Learned to drive as a teen in one of these and it was a blast driving these old bugs. Always envied my buddies (in the 1960s) who had the good fortune to own one or a Super Bug, all souped up with loud chromed mufflers and carburetors. Good luck and best wishes.

Hey, Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I gave up my VW bug about the same time after it being mine for about 25 years. Had to let it go because the body was rotten and a hazard to proper steering. My co-worker ended up with it and came back later and gave me $100 for it. Said that the body was rotten, but the motor and transmission were the best used components he had ever purchased. Well, I did have engine re-built 3 times and replaced the transmission. Lasted me for 300 000 miles.

You can see what happens to spray paint over hot dip. I thought it was amusing when Mustie was pushing on the inside of the door, like a clown going "Hey, wait guys, I have to push it open first!" It was also mildly amusing with the lubricant on the hinges. Everyone does it - even knowing that you have to wait for penetration, you still immediately try the object to see if it 'just worked'.

FYI- the slotted aluminum disc you said “I don’t know” about under the hood is the insert for a pressure cooker (probably Presto) which keeps food from burning to the bottom of the cooker.

Reminds me of a 73 yellow beetle I owned in the early 80's. I remember all one needed was a JC Whitney catalog and access to a phone to purchase any part needed for a complete restoration. I also remember wearing gloves while driving it to work in the Winter, to knock off the frost build up on the inside of the windshield. (from my breath) Come to think of it, I don't miss that Beetle as much as I thought I might.
