This is the best rundown on this rifle and caliber I've seen so far. Not the same facts getting repeated over and over again. I love the anecdotal reports and recommendations. Subscribed 👍

Here it is 2019 and just a couple of days away from Christmas, so MERRY CHRISTMAS ANDY! Because of the great success that you have had with the .17 HMR, I did go out and buy a rifle in this caliber and have been very happy that I followed your sage advice! When you shot that wolf and I watched you shoot that wolverine with a 17, I was sold... I couldn't quite believe the killing power at the time, but I knew that you are a man of your word and actions and that was good enough for me! I've been a fan for around 6 years now and really miss Ol Charly Dog... What a great dog he was! Thank you Andy for always keeping it real and bringing us your trapping adventures and the happenings around your cabin. I enjoy watching you and Eban hunting and fishing to. Every time I take my 17 out, I can't help but think of you and the Wild North! Stay safe my friend...

My son-in-law has a 93 too. Me and him were shooting small ground squirrels at 250 yards. I was using a modified Browning. As far as accuracy goes, there is no difference. They both make their shooters look really good.

"Pulled the trigger" on a Savage 93R17 FVSS (stainless heavy barrel) today Andrew. You should see the arguments one way and the other on this subject with comparing it to the .22WMR. Glad I listened to you, it is a wonder of modern technology, a hybrid between centre and rim-fire. Love the way it handles and fires, heavy barrel stabilizes, accutrigger just what Savage needed for their triggers. There is a fix for the rattling/loose clip and it has to do with the small rails on the clip that mate with the metal extension on the receiver. They are slightly bent upward and outward and just need a little gentle adjusting with a pliers. Another KZbin fix.Thanks for all that you do, all the best from Manitoba.

I'm a big fan of the .17HMR too. I bought a M93 back in the late 90s and dropped an old Weaver K4 "steel tube" scope on it. My neice (a new shooter) put 7 shots under a U.S. dime at 50 yds. at her first shoot with it! I like it to clean up woodchucks around the local dairy farms. It's got to be my most accurate "short range" rifle. Good video.

Love the 17 as well. Bought my first in 2007, a Marlin bolt action. Had many jackrabbits coming in and eating the haystack after a blizzard. No recoil, could watch the tiny bullet hit! Recently bought the Savage A17...a semi with a ten shot rotary clip. Has some hiccups, but the more I shoot it, the less hiccups! Gonna make a hell of a calling gun!

I picked mine up yesterday. I went with the Ruger American with an 18 inch barrel. I like the shorter barrel for getting thru the thick stuff. I'm only looking at 50 yard shots for my squirrels and 100 yard max for other critters, I agree that the longer heavier barrels are more accurate. I've always liked carbines for hunting in NH. I love your channel and look forward to more videos. Thanks man..

Hi Andrew, Nice review, You're lucky you can get ammo up there. I live in upstate NY and the politicians in this state and this country are anti-gun. Ammo is scarce if not impossible to get, I loved to hunt, and did so for over 60 years. Those days are over for me now, but your videos bring back fond memories. If I could still hunt I would definitely have one of those Savages. Love your stuff. God speed my friend.

Reid Johnson The .22 shortage isn't due to politics.. it's that prepping has come into fashion so many people are buying 10-20,000 rounds just to have some to sit on.. The ammo manufacturers only make a small profit on .22 ammo so there isn't enough money to put into new machines to increase production(without raising prices).
@TheWildNorth

coast2coast00 what would a person do with 20,000 .22 rounds?
@elitebowman5386
@elitebowman5386 10 жыл бұрын
coast2coast00 There isn't any hoarding in NY. Look at cabela's, Basspro, and Gander mtn websites. YOU can't even find them on their shelves . Why. cause they don't get them in. I get an ammo update from Gander Mtn. Haven't seen them get any in, in Months. You can get on their websites and look to see if they have them. THEY DON"T. Look in NYstate sites only.

I just bought a Savage Axis .223 for hunting Coyotes here in the Sask prairies. It's the cheapest rifle on the market and it shot a 1 in group out of the box. It's gonna do the job, and for a small amount of money.

Great video Andrew. I just found it. You tube didn't put it in my scroll when you posted it. I have to agree with you on the whole thing. I started off with a used savage and it was defective and I had to send it off to the factory. I think I mentioned it once to you. Well, that and the bad ammo that was put out in a rush, which I blamed on the savage, lead me to lose confidence in my 93. So I bought the Henry, $500. Pretty gun, bad shooter. Lever guns are only good up close. It's the way the hammer falls, the site picture moves. After 2000 rounds though, I still haven't had a jam.I get lots of complements on it though, lol. So I was still on my quest for a good reliable .17. Well, I bought the Browning heavy barrel .17....T-Bolt. The trigger wasn't nearly as good as the savage acque trigger. Nothing on the market is as good as that trigger, in any caliber. The acque trigger is probably the biggest leap forward in fire arms in the past several years. So I did some trigger work on the Brownings trigger. Got it down to 2.5 pounds. Put a 600 DOA bushnell on it and that gun is by far the greatest thing I've ever shot. But it didn't come that way. The T-Bolt is an extremely fast action to use. It's hard to go back to the savage action once you used a T-Bolt. I'd never give up that gun. Shooting it is better than drugs and smoother than whiskey. I did get the savage to work reliably. That is a fantastic gun. To out do its performance a guy has to go over $1000 and do some gun smithing. If I could have gotten a good one right off, I would have stopped right there. I would advise anyone else to start right there. Just like Andrew said. And don't buy a Browning for the gold triggers, they are plastic! And stay away from Marlin, they are having problems right now. But I would advise everyone and anyone, .17hmr is the best all around small game rifle, by far. And Andrew, I found on my savage to add a little petroleum jelly or grease to the bolt and magazine slide. It takes out the wobble and the catching. Good video!

Hey Andrew you should do another video on your big-game rifles. There's so much controversy over adequate calibers for game like Moose. There's a craze over the magnums these days... Everyone thinks you need a cruise missile to kill a deer in Canada. So far we've seen you drop a moose with your 25-06, Black bear with your 30-30, and get rid of the 300 WinMag. It be cool just to hear your thoughts on using something like the 25-06 on moose etc. keep The videos coming man!
@workingclasswoodsman
@workingclasswoodsman 9 жыл бұрын
I would like to hear that point of view as well. I will say a 30.06 will handle just about anything on this continent. The 25-06 is one of the most versatile rounds out there. The only thing to consider is distance. Here in NH you don't shoot much past 100 yards, most deer shot under 30 yards. If you start looking at shots over 200 yards you have to consider the game your shooting at. The 300 magnums work well at great distance on larger game and the 300 WSM is a dandy. Lots of options out there. If I had to pick one rifle it would be the 30.06.

great gun, very accurate, I have several guns with the pistol grip and it is a lot more of a controlling shooting and very comfortable. I sure wish they would make one with a calapse stock, I am not a big person and have short arms, I have a 12 gauge shot gun with pistol grip and calapsed stock and I can adjust to fit my reach especially with light weight or heavy weight clothing. love your programs your comment of a gun is not a toy, you are so right and glad you impress on viewers your views on guns and hunting and safety

22lr is still one of the best training tools, but for hunting small game, it makes life easier, and for what you do, it's perfect. The heavy barrel and decent trigger will make the gun more accurate, but I agree with you on the scope. No need for a $1000 scope. If it's good enough, it isn't a range toy or competition gun. Even the cheaper one is probably more accurate than the average shooter is anyway. Solid advice

I agree on the .17 Savage. Been using mine for 4yrs on Squirrels and varmints. Will never go back to a 22. They are just more accurate. Darn well better be a head shot on squirrels, though, or you've got nothing left for dinner.

I have a 17 as well, I don't see scanning your comments about the fix as far as the magazine not engaging with the bolt closed. Mine and every one off the line is that way. if you take the magazine and file down the two sides that "grab the shell casing", it will seat normal. I filed mine down with my leatherman maybe 0.010" so it isn't that difficult. Just a little at a time and then it is fixed! It was such a frustration with me as well and then I found on some web forum some guy fixing his.

Hey Andrew, Another great vid.I REALLY liked hearing all about your Savage Model 93 17HMR. At the time of watching this video, today is January 27th, 2017, your video was at least 2 years old. Anyway, just another thought for future vid ideas is talking about your other firearms and what you carry during bear season, do you ever carry a sidearm, stuff like that. You're most likely busy as it can get with your fur season in full swing. We hope you're doing well! (Maybe you you'll get 75 lynx and 50 wolverine this season, oh yeah and throw in several wolves!) and Martin as well. Be safe.!

The 17 is fast and flat shooting great for small critters or dispatching trapped animals and way more accurate than the 22s but that being said I shoot the 22 WMR and use the Hornady 30 grain V-max. 22 WMR 2,200 fps and 322 energy > 17 HMR 2,550 fps 245 energy For me I need penetration, a lot of the time when I shoot a coyote at 100 yards the 22 mag. zips through it even both front shoulders. I can see why you use the 17 HMR though no exit wounds less pelt damage. Nice video Andrew!

the 17 isent so good on smaller game it will take a rats head off there small enough critter the bullet does exit and wen it does it makes a hell of a mess. squirrels as well it will shred them if i shot a grouse in the middle with the 17 it would exit and take half of the breast with it as it exits

Can you explain how after getting a newer rifle as you did I believe last year, you start to get the accuracy with or without the scope. I have a really accurate German Pellet gun up to what was Olympic standard many years ago, the blueing on it is brilliant but its getting so as I can’t get a better shot than I have which is slightly low and to the left about half an inch. I have never found how to set one of these pellet guns up, where would you start. I am talking of taking the first shot as a test, and from then on taking another to see how far off it was with the first shot, but after that what to do to get what I know can be an accurate rifle, even though it is only a pellet its fine for birds and rodents up to large rabbits, how to get that crucial fine adjustment to dead spot on?

Hi Andrew, I like guns but here in the UK it is not something I am ever likely to get my hands on with the laws being so tight. Just wondered what gun you would use if a bear got in your way, or something that probably would never happen unless its a female bear with cubs or a male trying to find new territory. Are all your guns single shot and would the 17HMR be enough to stop a bear? Do you ever get worried about any animals and especially the bear or wolf attacking?

I usualy carry a 1022 22lr with me but am thinking about a 17. I came close to shooting a cougar that was following me. do you think i would have stood a beter chance of taking him down witha 17 or 22 I get alot of tips from your videos thanks Johannes

I have too many .22 mag guns to change calibers. Have you used the light weight .22 mag hollow points? If so, do they exit on head shots? I have only used the 40 grain HPs on coyotes and they almost always exit. Leo

yes they exit and leave a horrible exit hole!

I have the Savage 93r in 22mag. It's a tack-driver. Shoots sub MOA at 100 yards. I am considering another rifle in 17HMR so your video was quite timely. Other viewers have mentioned the new .17 Winchester Super Mag. This is also a rimfire that is a lot hotter load than the 17HMR (which is a necked down 22 mag casing). But so far everything I have read says that the new 17 WSM is inherently much less accurate than the little 17HMR. Caution: If the 17HMR is used for point blank dispatch then be advised that the bullet will usually fragment on impact and the likelihood of fragments spraying back at you is a very real possibility. Just ask some of the guys on the program "Swamp People". Many of them have used the 17HMR for close range dispatch and have been injured by richocheting fragments. Most of the alligator guys have gone back to the 22 mag or a centerfire.

Is that a Boyd's laminated stock on you .17 model 93? If so do you notice a difference in the point of impact throughout the changing seasons?
