Saaaame! I have super straight hair so none of this matters to me directly but its so interesting. It's so interesting how some people have super severe problems and some people just have a little bit. And it's also interesting to hear everyone's theories about it because obviously devacurl won't say anything.

I think part of the problem for some people was that the damage occurred so slowly over a period of time, it was difficult to realize it was happening until it was too late and they didn't have an immediate adverse reaction. Myself, personally, I used Deva for roughly a month, trying out the DeLite line and then the Build Up Buster and I experienced itching and burning, particularly with Build Up Buster. It made my skin turn bright red. Yikes! Deva released a statement yesterday but it didn't really feel like it was enough and I really hope they get to the bottom of the issue. I'm in the Facebook group for fellow people who've had bad experiences with DC and some of the pictures posted from people's experience are absolutely heartwrenching

Same happened to me with Build Up Buster just last month. I've only used it 2 - 3 times and I experienced dry, itchy, red/sore scalp. I had a number of Deva Curl products that I used once or twice and they made my hair extremely dry, dull and frizzy. I just threw them all the products out this past weekend but I'm going to retrieve them from the trash and see if I can get my money refunded from Deva Curl directly. Thankfully, my scalp issues have resolved with Briogeo Scalp Revival Tea Tree Oil, clarifying wash and Briogeo Don't Despair Hair Repair Conditioner with once a week.

When I started my curly hair journey I first started with devacurl. I’d done a lot of research and watched a ton of videos. So I thought hey that’ll help my insanely frizzy hair. At first my hair looked really really good. It was so shiny and curly and voluminous. But after two months of use I had dandruff galore and started noticing large amounts of my hair falling out. I thought that since I was doing the curly girl method and barely brushing my hair it was completely normal. Spoiler...it’s not. I didn’t even think it was the products until I saw a few posts popping up about devacurl causing hair loss. I immediately stopped and went out and bought some nice cheapish products and my hair is honestly DAMAGED from devacurl. It’s dry and doesn’t absorb moisture the same anymore. I have bald spots on the sides of my head and uptop. I’m furious that I trusted a brand because they were expensive. I’m even more pissed that devacurl won’t even acknowledge what they’re doing to people.

I spent so much money on deva curl when i first started the curly girl method about 6 years ago. I Always found the products to be heavy and greasy, yet i continued. Then the drain in my bathtub was terribly clogged , called the plumber. He said there was a hard white wax very thick in my pipes. I knew it was that devacurl. Had to have the pipes replaced. Never again i said. And yes i was losing a lot of hair and the hair was very dry. Havent used it in two years and im all good. Smell wise, i thought it smelled bad.

Same story for me. Used it intermittently for over 10 years and most recently thought it was getting straighter because of something else (hormones, too much sun, etc), and thought the scalp issues must have been from my clarifying washes or a medical condition. Crazy it was the products all along. I feel betrayed.

Hi Courtney, recently some big influencers have also had issues with devacurl. Spisha hair got so bad she has cut herself from her loved ones. I was never hard core for devacurl I only used 4 things from them cause when i embraced my curls i was in college and couldn't afford to spend $400 on hair products. Curly hair community has so many more options now to the point where you don't have to buy devacurl. Most who suffered the most damage were the ones who use it every washday like HiF3licia, Spisha, CurlNinja etc. If you're a product junkie and try different products and your devacurl is old you wouldn't have noticed. It's mostly the batches that came out in 2019 that started everything. Most likely deva changed the ingredients supplier, my friend who works with a well known cosmetics brand said that companies when they are bought swap suppliers to get a profit but another possibility was something went bad during manufacturing. So either deva changed suppliers who gives them cheap ingredients or there are bad batches during the manufacturing and to save production costs still bottled and sold them. But deva is giving everyone the same copied statements.

I only used dc stylers and could not understand why my hair was so frizzy and dull after all this work and effort. I thought it was dew points and humectants but nope. It was devacurl. I'm grateful I never used the cleaners. After a clarifying wash and deep condition and no devacurl stylers my hair is the least frizzy it's ever been! I hope everyone experiments and doesnt use their products to see it their hair looks better. I'm just blown away by this and feel horrible for all the women having way worse issues. Great video!❤

Switch to Shea Moisture products! They have a couple different lines for damaged hair. And check out Ayesha Malik's video on oil treatments, and see about getting the oils she uses! They can help with hair growth. But before using those, do a wash with a true sulfate shampoo (like a $2 bottle of Suave clarifying shampoo), to completely remove all previous product from the hair. Follow up with a deep condition or hot coconut oil treatment. No heat styling until her hair is recovered. And watch this channel, RealLife+CurlyGirl, Ayesha Malik, and India Batson for Curly Girl Method routines to try out!

Switch to a clean high quality brand such as innersense or curlsmith etc. If she’s okay with cutting some of the length off, that will definitely help to get rid of some of the damaged hair, and it will help the remaining hair to bounce up. I would also recommend repairing/protein treatments or even olaplex to try to fix the damage - however, if the hair is extremely damaged then these may not appear to do anything, but attempting to repair is worth a shot. To prevent further damage, make sure she sleeps with either a satin/silk bonnet, pillowcase or scarf and avoid manipulation to the hair and scalp I.e don’t wash too often, avoid tight braids and tight updos etc. I hope that was helpful!

The curls blueberry bliss line is really reparative for curly hair and it follows the CGM to a T. Their hair mask is really really good. If she has any bald or thinning spots (I got them too from devacurl) I recommend black castor oil. You apply it the night before a wash day and massage it into the scalp. Just wrap up her head and she’ll start seeing a difference.

I went to my hairdresser yesterday to get a cut and talk to her about what’s going on with DC. She clarified my hair twice yesterday and there’s still a lot of build up, more then she’s ever seen. I used DC exclusively from the beginning of styling curly. My salon used it and sold it to me. While using DC, I always had issues with my hair. Limp, frizzy, stringy, dry. I thought the problem was my hair. Compared to my current methods and products, I rarely had a good wash day with Deva Curl and the second day was worse. My stylist tried to help and used many different DC products to experiment. Now I know the glycerine was a big part of the frizz problem. I always had scalp itching and assumed it was from the strong fragrance. I hated the fragrance. But I continued to use it, because I did not realize there were many other curly product options. At some point, an extremely itchy, red, flaky, seeping, scabby, wound-like area developed on my scalp. I finally got a prescription lotion, but the problem persisted. After moving to south Florida last year, I was having constant styling failures. And I discovered DC increased their already high prices! I found the curly styling KZbin videos (found you first, Courtney) and began learning how to solve all the problems. I stopped using all DC products. I now use several of the products you have tested and recommended. My scalp issues are completely resolved! And my hair looks so much better in every way. I understand and agree with everything you mentioned in your explanation of your DC experience. Thank you for talking about this subject. I am sure the comments on this video will show that the DC problems are extensive. DC needs to stop, admit the truth, and remove the harmful ingredients. Jessie Curl cleansing and conditioning is wonderful for me. And Giovanni styling is perfect for Florida dew points. 👍🙂

I personally have had no problems with using Devacurl and get great washdays with it. However, as I have always said, there are so many good products on the market, there is no reason to use a product you don't like or one that gives you problems. And suddenly I noticed dandruff (which i almost never have) and my hair fall suddenly got waaay worse. I was so confused and then luckily this whole thing blew up a few days ago (at least for real) and I realized it had to be the gel. Obviously it could be other factors too which is why I decided to stop using it and see what happens. I stopped using the gel and my dandruff disappeared almost instantly. Bottom line i’m lucky to have only used it twice even though it affected me immediately. Listen to your hair and scalp, ASAP. Nice to hear your stance on this Courtney!

It’s very refreshing that you share your experiences, opinions, knowledge & advice but without overreaching or overreacting! I really like it that talking about this was kind of hard because it’s obvious you don’t want to “slam” anyone or take down DevaCurl. The verdict isn’t in yet on so many products we use, & as you point out what works for some may be completely wrong for others. It’s just so darn refreshing to hear common sense here as it has become less common. Thank you, sweet Courtney for proving once again, you’re the one who deserves a listen whenever you talk about these subjects. (You and Dr Dray.) sending blessings to you from another Texas girl! 🌷🌸🌷🤗

I am so glad You did this video!! I have recommended your videos so many times about all kinds of issues. I cant believe so many people dont have a clue about clarifying to remove the build up of products. Just because they don't have silicones doesn't mean they won't cause buildup. But the only thing I have to say about all this is just do your own research instead of strictly listening to influencers who are only trying to make a pay check. Find ones that actually care (like you). And do your own research!! 💜💜💜💜

I mistakenly used a sulfate based shampoo yesterday- the first one I've used in 8 years and my hair honestly feels so soft and flexible. I can actually run my fingers through it without it flumping back into a flat position. Didn't even realise the lack of sulfates was causing my hair to turn stiff and wire-y and my scalp to have so much buildup I've had to wash every 2-3 days...

@kimberlystewart8980
@kimberlystewart8980 4 жыл бұрын
I have had the bad stroke of luck of using and reacting to both. I can't describe what the wen did to my hair. The easiest way to describe it would be, smother my scalp in sebum and cause my hair to fall out. Then those loose hairs gathered in my hair via static electricity and formed a damned nest in the back. For an entire fall, I tried everything to get this knot out. It just got bigger. And bigger. Finally, when I went home at Christmas, it took my mom 2 hours and a can of anti-static starch to pull it out. The gob of hair was the size of a soft ball and dense. My hair stayed soft, and wavy, through the length, so until I had a giant ball of hair in the back of my head, I just thought it made my scalp greasy. With deva, my hair has turned to straw. My curl, which I've seen hit a 3a (I think it's coiling?!) with a good cut and solid care...is straight. Even changing products and doing intense clarifying and conditioning...it's dry as straw. It feels like I bleached it. My next step is cutting it off and starting growth over with a better cut.

Because you aren't actually washing your hair with those products. They don't have surfactants or cleansers just oils which causes quite a bit of build up that can kill the hair follicle.

Even the delight line and their deep conditioners caused major issues with me but luckily I figured out it was the products and stopped using them after only about 4-6 weeks use. I agree that people need to clarify and I have wavy hair so I figured out my hair just does better with sulfates and silicons 🤷🏻‍♀️ but from my experience it was more than just that with the devacurl products. Something adverse in the ingredients
@lindenpeters2601
@lindenpeters2601 4 жыл бұрын
With Wen, it was not just no-poo, but heavy silicones as well. That leaves buildup and more Wen will not get rid of it! Only sulfates remove buildup completely. Wavies and even a few curlies should clarify once a month or so with sulfates, to remove buildup (followed by a deep condition). Otherwise it will ruin your hair.

Well,your opinion is one of the most adequate. People don't clarify and deva is to blame. Their conditioner are ok,and stylers to some. People were paid for talking about the products and deva changed the influencers. That's the source,not the bad products(my personal opinion ofcourse)

Well,I used to wash my hair with sulfate-free shampoos and I experienced hair loss. Now I'm using sulphate shampoo and a good silicone free conditioner and it works perfectly. What I meant is that shampoo is to clean the scalp and if u don't clarify the scalp you may have scalp issues. Devacurl buildup buster does not clarify. Styling products and your conditioner do not touch your scalp,so why should it cause shedding? Btw scalp peelings are also a good idea to stimulate growth
@well_however

What I mean is that there is a whole big problem with sulphate free cleansers cgm recommends,not only with no-poo or low-poo from devacurl. You may experience scalp issues with any other cgm brand

Some DevaCurl products like the no poo conditioning cleanser have phenoxyethanol which according to the FDA can be a potential neurotoxin, causing skin irritation and can cause vomiting and dehydration in babies. Also, in the no poo lather cleanser has imidazolidinyl urea or diazolidinyl which is a formaldehyde releasing agent. That can cause skin irritation as well.

I still have scaly patches because I've been alternating Nizoral dandruff shampoo with DC to try to curtail. I thought maybe I needed the low-poo with a little more scrub, but after watching a couple of these, I'm convinced it is the product. I just bought new stuff last week. I never used Diva Curls but I am following the curly girl method with other traditional things like Inahsi shampoo and conditioner, “Blueberry bliss”leave inn, “AsIAm cowash” and “repair me” hair mask....everything Courtney recommended. During the journey I experienced massive hair loss and I can’t associate with any products or hormonal changes. I used a hair mask that is very easy to make and it saved me. One application so far, used it 5 weeks ago. Aloe Vera leaf and oignions in a blender. Peel off the hard from the aloe Vera leaf, just like an apple. Add one two fistfuls of oignons and dump all in the blender until liquid. Apply on hair, wrap it up and leave it on for one hour or more. Rub it well into scalp ...it is unpleasant to do it and to smell it ...but worth it plenty. Don’t plan anything romantic for at least 24 hours. No more hair loss since. One time girls, worth trying it!

Please, please, watch Dr. Dray's video on this topic. She posted it a couple days ago. She also touches about 'co-wash'. I also developed SD, just by choosing a 'natural' shampoo with a sodium coco sulfate. So, yes, I was shampooing, never used the 'co-wash' method, and still developed very serious sebhorreic dermatitis and it is cronic. You can only control it with the right medicated shampoo.

You know, I couldn't afford Deva products. Way, way too expensive for me! Instead I looked at reviews of products in my budget and the reason I wasn't like you and was like "If I want to be a curly girl I got to try Deva products," was because I found this awesome KZbinr, who taught me HOW and WHY my curls aren't popping like they should be. She taught me about the balance between moisture and protein and it was less about having to use this product or that product because we all have different textured hair so what works for me doesn't work for someone else and instead it was all about making my hair healthy and in that state my hair would shine and my curls would pop. That person was YOU Courtney! Now a few months later after starting my journey to find out just how curly my hair really is once it isn't a damaged, awful, dry, color-damaged nest of blonde straw I have HEALTHY hair and come to find out my healthy hair is pretty, and not 2b/2c waves but 3A spirals that bounce! I'm so glad I found you first in my hair journey and stuck with you because so, so, so many of those curly girl influencers were pushing Deva products but you explained to me how to fix my damaged hair and what was really important was balance (Olaplex #3 really did do wonders for me and left me shocked at just how curly I really was but it's the only product I swear by. The rest can be bought at Walgreens or Target because I'm not rich and I like to switch it up! Thank you so, so much! Keep doing what you're doing. You're better than the other curly girl hair channels imho. :)

I have an easy recipe for laundry soap. I have been using it for almost 7 years. Boil 4 Cups of water, then stir in 3 Tbsp borax and 3 Tbsp washing soda until completely dissolved. Stir in 2 Tbsp Dawn Ultra dishwashing liquid. Fill a clean gallon sized container (I use an old vinegar jug) half-way with cold water, then pour in your soap mixture. Fill the rest of the way with more cold water. I use this to refill my old laundry detergent bottle (because it's easier to pour and has the convenient measuring cap). I pour one capful in with the laundry and also fill the dispenser. You're basically using twice as much but it costs pennies to make so no big deal. For stains, I pour some into a small spray bottle (about 6 oz) then add about a tablespoon of Dawn and swirl it around. Spray it on and rub it in, then wash. It works on most stains.

I just started CGM two weeks ago. I’m fine, 2B/C wavy, high porosity, and low density. I almost always air dried my hair and don’t really use any stylers so my hair was in pretty decent condition. So, I started with Cantu products for about a week, and had stringy greasy hair that lost definition quickly. With this buildup, I did the Suave clarifying shampoo and a Maui Moisture deep conditioning. The next day, I tried Giovanni’s TTT, smooth as silk conditioner and LA Hold gel....The day after I had a red scalp, itching and irritation. My hair was also soft, dry and lost all curl. What?! In the meantime, I had ordered Devacurl’s sampler pack for wavies and so decided to try that today. I had the best wash day ever! Best curls ever! Then, I just found out about the scandal. Don’t know what to think and my scalp is still irritated from the Giovanni products...I think? Suggestions? Help!

I've enjoyed your channel and your is very pretty! A few comments. Devacurl was not the first line that catered to curly girls, it was Ouidad. They've had a lot of product formulation changes and additions over the years, but they always still advocated for using a small amount of shampoo. I wonder how much of this hair loss is from the devacurl product itself or from the actual no poo method. At some point if you get buildup on your scalp and you happen to be in oilier skin or scalp type I could totally see where that would become a problem. I can also see where it can be a problem. If you are a very sensitive skinned person because the botanical ingredients can be very irritating. The same thing happened with Wen, often sold on QVC. It's another nopoo type product, And a bunch of women had hair loss from that as well.

Thanks for weighing in on the Deva Curl issues. I feel a little stronger than you re: even trying Deva Curl products now. I only used them in September, and had bad reactions like your sister, but having used them for a short time, my hair isn't recovering no matter what I try to help it. It's as if it was chemically burned. It has lost it's curl pattern, is super dried out and frizzy, and also Matt's and snarls very easily. I just mention this briefly because I guess I'm not the only one experiencing lasting hair damage even after using the products for a short time. I'm inclined to agree with a theory proposed that something has changed; the formulations or the plastic containers, or the way they're stored perhaps in heat where chemical changes could occur. So for me, it wasn't just a matter of discontinuing them. The damage was done already, and it seems to have damaged it permanently according to a stylist (who ironically was a Deva Curl specialist). I'm very sad. I so appreciate you bringing this subject up, though. I also want to quickly say I LOVE your videos. I only found them around December, and have watched almost all of them and am subscribed. My hair was very similar to yours so I could really relate to your journey! I am grateful for your suggestions of different products to try, an truly appreciate your upbeat, positive, safe approach for us. And I love your shirts! You've been a positive influence, and a great help. Thanks for everything!! I may have to do a haircut & start over, but I'm grateful I now have the knowledge to take good care of my wavy-curly hair no matter what the length so I'm going to choose to stay positive about my situation. 😊 I look forward to Future videos, and I love one brand washdays, too!

@@SwavyCurlyCourtney No I have to contacted them yet, though a number of people in the Facebook support group do and got a rather cookie cutter response saying there's nothing wrong with their products. I am planning on submitting my situation for the lawsuit possibly, and also to a link I got to the FDA. Mostly I just want to be supportive to the people in the support group who e had far worse damage than mine. I also, like you want to tell people to not be afraid to stop immediately using product that is harming you, to trust your instincts that it's not you that's causing it, and to be cautious about using Deva Curl until they get to the bottom of this. Thanks for your kindness. Maybe it's a blessing people finally came out and shared their stories so that more could be saved from possible damage.
