My original devacurl video: • 😳 My Totally Honest an...
My favorite products: www.amazon.com/...
So I recently went to my professional beauty supply distributorship, and they had a 7 page packet from Devacurl in response to recent concerns, complaints, and issues people have been posting on social media. Naturally, I always try to make these sort of videos as non-biased as possible, and I try to look at it from multiple angles, while applying some general reasoning and common sense. My goal is never to frighten or encourage cancel culture, nor is this video intended to be an attack on the devacurl brand. There are many differing angles that should be looked at when assessing these things, and I want to consider all possibilities, while still being wise and cautious. As a cosmetologist, I have a bit more behind the scenes information on black market products, and as a cosmetology instructor, I have a deeper understanding of hair and scalp than the typical consumer. My purpose, is to use that knowledge to educate and empower others to make smart decisions as it pertains to their hair and health.
On another note, I have had a few people who are blind supporters of the brand attempt to attack me for facts that were stated in a non-derogatory manner in my previous DevaCurl video... I addressed those in this video... probably in a more petty manner than I should have.
Always remember, that as a consumer, you drive the market with your dollars. Your spending, AND your attention feeds the growth of certain companies. That being said, sharing products that you know to be good products, helps to increase awareness on that brand, and push sales. This is a way of demanding better quality from the market. This type of spending is literally why there are so many quality product options to select from these days.
I truly hope that this video has been educational, thought provoking, entertaining, and detailed enough for you to gain a good understanding of not just the drama, but of your hair. As always, let me know your thoughts below in the comment section!
Until next time, take care, God bless, and stay Glam!
Linwood

DevaCurl products are like that ole 7Up commercial; nevah had it, nevah will! ERYTHAING aint for erybawdy! Take the time to recognize what works for your scalp AND your hair. Same for anything you put on or IN your body. But thass common sense; and we know it isn't that common. I've fried, dyed, and laid to the side this hair for over 40 yrs. I do a big chop NOW every 3 - 4 yrs. Reset that curl pattern and get all the colors/dye gone. Get ends trimmed monthly. Stopped silking it cuz Jawjuh don't play wit that humidity😅. Nevertheless, I agree ☝🏽 if any product makes my scalp irritated, I am going to immediately stop 🛑 using the products. I believe in common sense if it causes irritation and flakes, then the products are not for ME. Thanks for one of the best Deva Curl response I have watched. When you released your first Diva Curl video, I made a comment about an influencer who "normalized" scalp irritation. She advised people to continue with no shampoo methods, because eventually, the scalp will balance itself. No. No. No!! I had an issue with that hogwash, a year ago, and still have a issue, to this day. The opinion I shared with you, after your Diva Video, is the same opinion I have now. People need to advocate for themselves. I am truly sorry for the damage that has been done. Hopefully this will lead people to question why a product/method might be wrong for them. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for this. As a licensed cosmetologist myself, I stand by the fact that co-washing is not cleansing. Like you said, co-washing has its uses, but cleansing isn't one of them. I instruct all my co-washing clients to clarify/cleanse with a shampoo once a month (or every 6 weeks depending on how often they wash their hair). DevaCurl needs to sort themselves out. Period.

GlamFam, it doesn't matter that the video is long, you are inparting knowledge. This is good information👍🏽 For me personally I couldn't do the co-washing because I found that conditioners often made the skin on the back of my hand itch (different brands did this). I found that while drying my hair my scalp would itch like crazy so I stopped that one time. I found that products with lanolin it made my skin dry out and it like crazy. This happened in both hair and skin care products. So when I am going to buy a new product I check for the presence of lanolin. If it has it I don't want it.

I didn't know they drop a 7 pages response. Thanks for taking the time to read it and share your toughts on it. Last year I won a trial kit of deva curl decadence. Before I used them I checked the ingredients. What stood up a lot was the amount of proteins in them. I knew I couldn't use them all at the same time ( I had issues with a collection of a another brand who had protein and didn't like the experience). I kind mix their uses with products that I have. I was fortunate to have any issues with the products. I'm disappointed on how Deva handle the situation. I won"t purchase their products.

So many things impact the scalp and hair not just shampoo and conditioner. Diet, medication, pollution in the air (California has wild fires), and natural changes in the body (menopause is an example). However, I agree if so more people are impacted there needs to be a recall and a full review. Is the product being used wrong? How is the mass manufacturing process? What are the ingredients? ETC it's hard to tell who is at fault. In general it's important to people to change products regularly. I find my hair and scalp gets to used to a product after a while. Side note the curl pattern is determined by the shape of the hair follicle (oval vs round), shampoo and conditioner can't change the hair follicle so if the curl pattern is bad it's due to damage to the hair after it leaves the scalp. The roots are probably still curly the ends are affected. Excellent information in this video very balanced. Also when I did hair I worked at an Aveda concept salon these are natural products. (I worked full time as stylist while I put myself through college.) But people would sometimes have allergic reactions to the ingredients rash and irritation almost seems like an allergy. Natural doesn't mean a product is good for everyone. Lots of people are allergy to natural things.
@GetGlamFam
@GetGlamFam 4 жыл бұрын
These are all excellent points, and allergic reactions, depending upon severity can cause issues of hairloss, rash, itchy scalp, etc. it is definitely a complex issue, I don’t think Devacurl is 100% to blame, but I disagree with how they have handled this mess, especially given the mass amount of people who claim to be affected.

The training was wonderful. Now, when I used it on my hair. My hair looked horrible. It was dry and my hair felt dirty. It made my scalp flaky. I immediately stop using it. Nor did I suggest their products. I still sold a lot of their products because I had a lot of Cosmetologist who loved it. It did very nice results for them and their customers. I never did like the deva curl products 🤷‍♀️ some of these companies and their cult followers need to understand that not everybody has to like their "holy grail" product. As a curl "friendly" company they should understand how complex our hair is. I didnt like the first mielle organics products (less popular brand but just an example) either but then they dropped the the honey and pomegranate line and it's my FAVORITE. Said all that to say if mielle organics had come out with the behavior deva curl is now and prior I wouldve never given the new products a chance.

There is actually a lot of protein in the deva curl products. They are filled with hydrolized proteins. Yes they are also moisturising but they have lots of protein. Also about the hair being darker in the before photos and lighter in the after photos, one of the claims that users have made is the products lightened peoples hair. So their hair being lighter is not not necessarily them coloring it. A good example is Aysha Malik (spisha). She doesn’t colour her hair but her newest videos about the DevaCurl scandal clearly show that her hair is lighter.

Ok, I just found your channel yesterday and I've been going down your rabbit hole. I was recommended to use their products by a cosmologist because she stated that Shea Moisture was "too heavy" for my fine hair type. So of course, I purchased the trial size (and eventually purchased the full size bottles 1 time) because I did like how my HAIR looked. However, I started getting flaking that was noticable on my clothes. All this to speak, child I didn't know that my HAIR could like a product but not my SCALP. It was like I just had an aha moment lol. I did stop using the product but I felt so bad because I spent so much. I also never watched any of these influencers videos on the subject because I felt like it was too much. This is the first video I've watch about it (as I feel like the hype has died down). Everything you said here makes 200% PERFECT SENSE. When my daughter was 9-10 I used Carol's Daughter a beloved product by most. A month in of using every week, her scalp began to flake. I'm talking big HUGE in Alaska during a snow storm flakes. Her hair loved the products but no matter how much I gently scrubbed her scalp "here come those flakes". After another month...well let's just say I threw Carol's Daughter out. Because everyone loved the line I thought maybe I just got a bomb package. But I wouldn't spend more money to find out. Down the KZbin line, I brought Deva Curl the One Conditioner and while we didn't have any of the issues talked about, I never brought again even before all this. We have had as good of results using products tons cheaper without compromising on quality. In regards to Co-washing. Thankfully when this "fad" came along I did use Common Sense. If lotion would not wash your skin, how in the world is conditioner (lotion for the hair)going to wash your hair?? Unfortunately, I became a natural when not everything was easily discernable and I was very vulnerable. I was forced to go natural due to hair loss, and did so out of a last resort. My professional hair stylist even suggested I see a doctor. After seeking help and many tests, a dermatologist told me there was no reason my hair should not be growing, and I was nearly bald in the back of my head. No longer able to cover my growing baldness by braiding my hair up the back into a style to cover. There was no hair to "catch up" so I went natural as a last resort. Not at all because it was just becoming a fad then or me wanting to. Far Far Far from it. This issue had increased over a few YEARS getting that bad. IMMEDIATELY my hair bounced back and started growing. JUST BY STOPPING THE RELAXERS. That was all. PERIOD. Still washed my hair... 4B-C strands by the way EVERY WEEK, conditioned, (did this without covering my hair in conditioner for HOURS to overnight. Just a simple put in wash out 10-15 minute conditioner in one take while your still in the shower) still "GREASED" my scalp with items that my hair and scalp had no issues with. Then someone suggested KZbin... Tried a few things from KZbin that seemed to work(forgot my hair was already bouncing back and flourishing just letting go the creamy crack) started holding KZbin as law... including becoming a product junkie that set me and my pockets back...a few years...At last Common Sense picked up again. . Cleaning out my product closet putting that money to better uses like... paying rent...Listening to MY HAIR AGAIN...IT LOVES GREASE AND OILS BY THE WAY. NO APOLOGIES. I obviously still love KZbin, but I am careful about only taking in quality content and even that is taken with a grain of salt. While it's interesting to see what everyone is doing and saying, I listen to my hair and body. I use what works and I don't care what anyone suggests, I'm content with what I now use Some DIY some OTC. For the OTC, as long as they don't change I won't, unless my hair or scalp or body shuts it down. I call it balance. My hair is healthier than it's been in a long time creeping back down my back. My daughter now grown, who like me was forced to go natural (COVID), is now transitioning. But thanks to all the KZbin nonsense I went through, I am able to help her avoid the mistakes I made as I help her on her journey. So her hair is healthy and thriving and in these 2 years her new growth is already SHOULDER LENGTH. She started this journey with very long 4B-C hair to begin with, so her total hair is PAST her bra. And it has been using simple products and techniques and YES SOME SIMPLE PRATICLE KZbin suggestions, that is helping us both succeed.

Deva curl really messed up my hair. Im still recovering. Right now I am only using organigrow to restore the natural health of my scalp and hair follicles. With trimming and satin protection from the sun my hair is coming back...After two years 😩 also being vegan for a few years ruined my hair quality as well and i am noticing grey hairs at the age of 25. Ive also been using rice water and aloe castor oil vitamin e treatments and my hair is growing fast and the density is coming back. My hair definitely needs some protein though i havnt had some in my conditioning treatment in so long 😩

I never had any interest to purchase theDeva Curl products and I just found it really interesting how there were a lot of bandwagon Saints hopping on the train to Georgia speaking on This deva curl fiasco. I’m just glad to see somebody who has a fair and balanced commentary on this subject and also on top of that....where in the world is common sense?? Like imho I believe cowashes are a total waste. I always feel like it makes my hair worse. Plus who in their right minds keeps using products that hurt them. Insane in the membrane folks. Deva Curl should hire you for PR at this point lol. Ps can Alison serve us some pretty pastel or whatever color hair is in style looks?

I haven’t used Deva Curl products since 2016. I suffered from hygral fatigue when using the decadence line. When my hair was wet it was stretchy like bubble gum as if I had bleached it to death. My hair was all virgin. I was guilty of doing overnight deep conditioning and not using any protein. It was great for detangling, but my scalp hated it. So I was constantly cleansing my hair and clogging my bathtub drain.I gave up with my hair and eventually went to wearing locs. Sometimes it takes using common sense when using products like these. I knew Wen had issues but I was convinced it was the silicones that were the Devil. So of courses, DevaCurl and the whole curly girl method had it figured out. At the end of the day, scalps need to be cleaned and curly hair needs protein.

Safe to say Stephanie's video really set Deva Curl down the drain. For her to be among their top former Deva stylist to call them out and having inform a client list of over 100 people to stop using a their product was huge. . . Than came the videos of customers who have virgin hair suffering from lost of curl pattern despite rarely using heat on their hair, some not using heat at all along with noticeable bald patches; the only common thing linking all these people was the use of Deva Curl products.

This line is pretty old, and started with products that catered to curls looser than mine. They later expanded to products for fine, loose waves, and a separate line for tighter coils. In terms of moisture, they were nice, but a lot of people have been having issues ever since ownership of the company changed. I will say, the price point has always been super high, so that was a turn off for most buyers.

But your comment on protein was so timely, I just figured out I needed a hit of a protein treatment.. and will stay attentive to once a month. my hair breaks quickly when I dye so wearing a u part wig and just "fake coloring" the leave out" and hair seems to be doing better. Invested in satin sheets and pillowcases so we will see. I have that proud kinky nappy strand but it always grew easily to about 10 inches with no issues. maybe menopause is impacting my stands.. stay safe out here...

Long video; but i learned something. I am on a lot of medications. Sometimes I will use a product that everyone says is good, but it doesn't work for me. My scalp will itch to the point of it being sore for me to touch for weeks. I just tried some new stuff for my box braids, my scalp itched like i had a relaxer on it. Then when i took the braids down my hair matted up and was so brittle I almost cut my hair . But luckily I had a big jar of petroleum jelly i slathered my hair with it it helped me get the matts out. I told my friend to throw that stuff away. I will never use it again. I see braiders on KZbin using it all the time. It's not for me. Its a good product though. So long comment long, it could have been an interaction with my medication. That's what I learned.

listen. I am a curly hair baby I had just started using DC, the b'leave in defining gel since the products were so expensive. i used it maybe 6 times total over the course of a few months when i wanted to look extra nice and bring out my curls. my hair was virgin, no bleach or dyes, nothing special just good shampoo and conditioner. i dont wear make up or use hair products or style my hair, its never exposed to heat other than the few times i want a hot shower. because of this i had healthy thick hair. i'm 31 and female baldness does not run in my family. at least 20% of my hair in the front half of my head is GONE. the back of my scalp apparently wasnt exposed as much to the gel so i still have thicker hair in the very back with my old ringlet curl pattern. so much hair fell out it was clogging up my shower. you can see through my bangs to my scalp especially in direct sunlight. so much breakage, i've never heat styled my hair and had no idea what breakage was like. weak hair, i have tons of frayed baby hairs my hairline-crown is wrecked. no more curls in the front just frizzy stringy waves no matter how much i pamper it, even wet it feels frizzy????... ive been checking my scalp for new growth in sparse patches and everything i see is so pale and thin and transparent it looks like my body hair, not head hairs. its like something in the product caused parts of my crown to go into follicle miniaturization??? it's insane. i'm about to cut all my hair off, im numb to the loss of my curls. i just want to get every trace of whatever was in that stuff off my scalp, it's terrifying. i would be so much more comforted if new growth looked healthy.

So after looking at the product ingredients it's pretty obvious what the issue is. That the product wasn't marketed correctly. It is not remotely a co wash. It is more of a protein shampoo treatment. There's not really any conditioning agents in it at all. Also one of the ingredients is limited in European cosmetics because it is known to be irritating, I know that the same health and safety regulations don't exist in the US.
