We had the same problem on a Laing O'Rourke site in central London. It was all fair face 6 inch blockwork and the client was unreasonably strict with the perp joints being bang on plumb. We actually had to make a video of us measuring the length of blocks from 6 different packs to cover ourselves and the most extreme case was one coming up at 422 instead of 440. We actually got a drink for it from the subby because it gave our foreman a lot of ammunition to use against the client who were subbing to O'Rourke. It turns out that a lot of these irregular - and in some cases unusable - materials are coming from Turkey.

This is a tune ive hummed a few times to a few different people - the reason we have 10mm beds and perps is to absorb the differences in brick size. If bricks were accurate we'd be rocking 3mm beds like the old timers did on their face bricks. Got engineerings on one site that are all 220 long, thats a lot of fun when doing the soldier courses over lintels let me tell you. No clue why folk dont leave well alone when they see big (but even) perps. Cant be coming from bricklayers this side of 2 years on site, its one of the first issues any of us come across.

Redrow and anwyl have the exact same issue our perps are between 15-20mm looks disgusting to be fair,and too make matters worse all the bricks are not covered so piss wet through and are a nightmare to keep walls plumb,especially when packs are sat on floor in puddles,pride in the job is all good and well when they look after the materials on site!!!!

We have a site with exact same problem at the moment, it’s a nightmare. Went to one of our sites yesterday to brush some brickwork off that was completed Friday but was to went to brush the same day! Bloody site was shut 🤬

We had this problem on our job using “audley reds” the engineering bricks in the footing was bigger than the Audleys and site manager wasn’t happy with the perps being 25mm but he also wouldn’t let us reverse the bond because he didn’t want 1 course straight nick 90% of the audleys was 205mm 😂

Thank god I'm australian, all of our bricks are within 2=3mm. Stretcher 230mm, all our brick and blockwork works to 600mm2 panel.

Not always the bricks,the footing can be a right mix up of tight and short or just big. I share these now with my group whats app as always good to hear from other bricklayers trauma's and highs.👍

When bricks are small you normally discover that the footing is set out wrong, they should of reversed it or something but they just go 10mm and see what they are left with 😂

Nothing wrong with that brickwork, you have to work with what you have got and make a good job of it. I worked on jobs for Glaxo Pharmaceuticals in the 80s and we had to physically plumb up every third perp. but multi billion pound companies can afford that.

We’ve had the odd job with plumb perps, more on the commercial side of things but they tend to use higher quality materials with less deviance so plumb perps are possible

The main problem on site in my opinion 🤠 , The management don't believe a word of it yet the other person whoever it may be,that isn't on site.They are deemed to be truthful and what they've done or delivered is perfect..... We're trying to build a school (Metsec)at the moment , Compliance is ruining the game especially when you are on a price and the bloke ( other trade) working above/ beside you, is on day work..... laughing n whistling all day!! 😢

@@Tone_Team On the exterior of the 4" blockwall where it is directed towards the brick you add a vapor barrier on block to keep water from getting into the house. As we both know water does get in from time to time so the vapor barrier plus weepholes allows the moisture to leave the cavity. So you know it has been code for decades in North America. There is alot to choose from.

I find with some of the stock bricks, that the tops and bottoms and sides are a bit rounded and it sometimes looks like you have big bed and perps 😮 but once everything is kept good to the eye nice and clean finish all will be good 👌 except for the youtube brickwork trolls 😂

They are set to brick gauge, that is planning. What do you do if you set all the bond with 10mm perps and then a lorry load of bricks come in the correct size, which happens all the time? Loads of 3/4s everywhere. Brick gauge was devised for a reason

@@Tone_Team Your right you do have to space out the perps but sometimes you add a piece in the corner to tighten up the perps. Makes the wall look better and less chance of cracking and leakage.

the brick still looks like a decent one to lay. the site i have been on the past 2 years has the worst brick ever. brick sizes vary from 210-220 and the faces blow easily

Why dont you work the facing bricks from the dpc to avoid the 17 mm cross joints .perps .there is no golden rule to follow a 890mm brick span .different types of bricks can very at least 15 to 20 mm in length. Set the building to suit .its not rocket science mate .you might end up with a couple of straight joints on the damp but surely it is better than the monster perps

We don’t get them to damp is the first problem, 2nd problem is that it has to be set out to near as damn it to brick gauge. I’ve never known anyone in all these years say that building get set to suit brick sizes. Bricks are made to a certain tolerance so you are screwed if you set out to a load of smaller bricks and then they come in the correct size. We could rebond on top of the splash course but in all fairness the groundworkers have worked close to brick bond as possible and the batch of bricks that come in for below DPC were actually more or less correct size. Brick gauge is there for a reason mate

I said different brick types not different batches of the same brick , for example an hoskin old farmhouse brick size about 205 mm long ,a Weinberger red multi about 225mm long ,let see you stick to the brick gauge

Have you ever had a brick rep out with regards sizes......its a joke..... We had 1 out years back on an Aldi supermarket in Kettering. Raked out brickwork, compete nightmare keeping the joints plumb. Got loads of grief from main contractor over perp sizes. Got a rep out, I kid you not...... He ran bricks across the car park for close to 100 yards, put a tape across it and said it was within their tolerances. Fact is, even using 1sts the quality is rubbish and most major builders buy seconds to save money Silk purse pigs ear comes to mind 😂😂 This is why continental built random 1/4 bond looks so much better, not having to mess with big perps by keeping them plumb. Just plonk a half in every now and then. Then again I worked in Germany in the early 90s and their builds were far more advanced than where we are now.

@@Tone_Team if I built a house for myself now I would definitely build using a continental bond. The German site agents hated anything half bond including block work. The thing that stands out from then was how little waste material we had. We could build a floor of an apartment block and the waste would fill a muck tub. Every opening size worked multiples of 250mm, the block we used for it was a 250mm cube. Just no waste. The amount of block/ brick we skip on site along with all the other waste is just scandalous. That's down to poor architects and not having anyone to say "let's make openings work sizes" not rocket science
