I assume everybody and their brother told you there is a smaller dump truck on tracks that you can turn sideways and just jump as you go. That would make it probably cheaper in the long run. You just have to get good at dumping. You wouldn’t have to run a excavator back-and-forth, you would just run this rubberized trackdump truck. You should add one to your fleet with all of the ponds that you build. This would be a great idea and probably would not take you as long. Come on Chris. Another ride to the auction. You should find one.

I have an idea for you to consider. I think you could use a "job-site" storage container to keep your tools, and other things you routinely use while working at an offsite location. Why not get a "dumpster" the kind most businesses use to hold their trash, the several cubic yard variety that are designed to be picked up with a set of forks and lifted vertically then rotated and dumped into the back end of a garbage truck. You could use the dumpster to store your tools, consumable's (grease, oils, microwave oven, fire extinguishers, lawn chairs, etc.) including your walk behind compactor, rakes, shovels and fishing equipment. The folding plastic covers can be made to be removed when they are not needed. So, whenever you are faced with a "transport dilemma" like how to get a lot of rock or soil from a central dumpsite location and transport it across a dam or some other restricted access location to be used as "fill material" or in this case as "rip-rap" along the front or back slopes if a dam, you empty it out of your stored "valuables" and convert it back into its primary intended use as a "dumpster". Here is where you get a little creative. You need to build a small cradle like wheeled undercarriage for the dumpster so you can effectively tow it behind your tracked excavator. Since you work alone a lot and you determined it was most cost and time effective to transport the rip-rap material in the bucket of your "350" excavator, this means you made a lot of back and forth trips between the primary rock dump site and the continuously advancing end use location of the rip-rap material. Even though the "350" bucket holds two or more yards of rip-rap rock material, there was a lot of transport time and energy spent with the 350 carrying an empty bucket going back for more fill material. I was thinking wouldn't it be "nice" if you could double (or more) the amount of rock or fill material per trip if you could easily transport another "bucket-load" worth of material with each trip? since the "dumpster" is mechanically fairly robust, and is designed to be picked up rotated and dumped out using the slotted holders, it would be a fairly simple modification for you to have an adapter created that would allow you to insert your excavator bucket into it to allow you to easily lift the dumpster filled with rock or soil off its towing rig so you can manipulate it as you would a normal bucket. A custom 4-wheel, slip-in-slip out undercarriage for the dumpster would probably work best to facilitate its hands-off transition from transport container to "bucket" use. The 4-wheel carriage would also probably make it easier to "steer" when pushing it out ahead of you when you reverse direction to go back for another pay-load. The tongue length of the carriage should be adjustable to deal with various road and site conditions. Most "dumpsters" are shaped in such a way as to promote the dumping of materials from inside of them. I think depending on your site requirements, you could attach and dump the contents of the dumpster toward or away from you as necessary. It goes without saying that this "container" was only designed for transport and dumping of trash like materials and would require additional metal and structural improvements to deal with the weight of rock and soil materials. What do you think of my idea? It has a real-world two purpose application, one as a potentially secure "lockable" off-site, portable/transportable storage locker for your hand tools and expendable supplies and second, also function as a "tow-behind" secondary bucket for your excavator (with appropriate structural modifications/additions necessary). What makes this design idea "unique" is the ability to use the dumpster as a secondary "bucket" for your excavator. Simply pulling a "trailer" behind your excavator filled with rock or soil is not all that helpful without a way to dump and strategically place the material without having to move it twice in the material handling process. Even using a "side-dump" trailer does not give you the flexibility I think you need to have at your fingertips when putting the finishing touches on your engineering projects. Of course having a large capacity side-dump trailer is a handy thing to have at times, but the cost of transporting it to a remote off-site location in a one-man operation might not be feasible for you. However, I think you could easily tow a "dumpster with wheels" behind your truck, or find room on a low-boy trailer already transporting heavy equipment to your remote location. From what I have seen so far, you don't typically set up an "off-site" storage locker for temporary storage of tools?

Using your 350 and spreading it the way you did and coming in behind it with the other excavator smoothing it out was the way to go. It saved you a lot of trips and time. The pond is looking better every day. He must have a pretty big spring feeding that pond because it’s starting to collect a lot of water. He shouldn’t have a problem keeping it full. I don’t think that spillway will ever see water running over it with that big overflow pipe even in a hurricane.
