As I watched this video, I was asking myself, why the heck is he just putting all that crap directly behind him??? What you call a sloppy mess is roughly how the ground is in the summer where I live in Scotland, but when we get through the 3 to 6 feet of topsoil it's all mostly clay like with lots of stone through it

@@ryanhoward1013 IF and do mean "IF" I remember correctly! His goal is to have basically 6? BNB's, or something close to a BNB (Cottages). Now I am guessing that he is going to bring in Prefabricated Cottages. Since they will be coming in on a 18 wheeler (or more wheels). They need a good base to drive on! Kudos to Chris for making this road as STURDY as Possible!! :)

I am with you on the irritation it causes when a piece of equipment isn’t running right ( battery in skid steer), for me, its just take the time to get it fixed and be done with, saves time in the long run also, especially when you have limited time to get a project done, thanks for the ride along sir, going to look nice when your done.

When I was a kid, I’d spend every day after school sitting on the spoil piles watching them dig the foundations for my parent’s generation’s subdivisions. All cable excavators, and still the occasional steam driven pile driver, too! That would be ‘59, ‘60 or so. Here I am at 70 doing the same thing. Just not sitting on dirt. I can afford a recliner now.

It wasn't too awful long ago that crusher run was less than $10 a ton!!! I sure wish our 1 mile long drive was built like you are building yours, (back in 1989) but the land owner who was building it kept telling the driver, "go a little faster, a little faster"... This was fun. That's a solid little road you built there. Have to say when you brought BamBam to grab the dirt, the places where you scraped the dirt back, he looked like a prehistoric beast with his mouth open. I used a skid steer once and although I could make it go back & forth just fine, moving dirt was not as easy as you make it appear. Thank you for sharing this and sharing your skills.

That’s going to be a good road once you cut in some ditches and the road has time to dry out good. You might have some issues with those wet spots if you drive heavy equipment over them too soon. I enjoyed this video very much.

@8:22 If you're battery is suddenly failing I'd check that the alternator is working right. Alternator goes bad it kills the battery. Replace the batter and the new one goes dead too.

That road base will be more than enough to handle the equipment you have been running and if that will be the path for future construction for the new farm, will save you a lot of headaches getting equipment and materials over to the cabin builds. Interesting how the type of road base changes as you go from the PNW to the East. Thanks very much for sharing.

Chris, I've never seen you use fabric for road building, I would have laid fabric over the sod and 4" of rock, I think you would save a bunch of money on rock.

I was wondering about water getting trapped in the gravel. With the video it's hard to tell if the ground runs down hill towards the new farm or towards the trees. Wondering if you should cut a few small swales on the tree side to drain it . Again, it's hard to tell sitting in my chair.

Got a lt more don’t today than you thought you would!! No surprise there!! Haha. You know how to make the most of your time. Nice having the equipment at home, that you do. Paying someone to do this work is ridiculous!!! 😂😂😂. Doing it yourself is nice as there are economies to doing so. This is when the equipment really starts to pay for itself!! When you do it yourself and are getting the product at wholesale, it’s a lot easier throwing that extra 4” or so of product down vs just going by what was spec’d for the contract, if doing it for someone else. I think you are really generous when doing other peoples roads when it comes to gravel applications. It’s why you keep getting the work!! A little insurance for the job done and if you get another job as a result it pays in abundance. That road will be nice, for sure. Ditching along can help on flat ground just be a you should be able to create your own grade that way. Gotta get the water flowing somewhere!! Haha. We had some pretty flat land out at the feedlot portion of the ranch and it was a constant work in progress managing the water and especially the spring runoff. You will get it, there’s no doubt!! It will be fun as the project at home progresses to see what you do for yourself!! Take care, Eh!
