What a lovely site for a house, now. It was so forgotten in the midst of those trees and now looks so proud. Once again your wonderful ability to sculpt dirt shines. That front yard looks natural. It doesn't look like dirt was removed at all, can't wait to see the backyard as well. I can't believe a half-hour went by. This was fun, Chris and thanks for bringing us along.

Agree with the owner wanting the front lower ,helps balance the look of the home ,it looked like it was in a hole,be even nicer if the front boards below that deck were boarded up fully and the soil raised up higher, giving it a flat front yard . You certainly have transformed the area and when it's all green again it will be even better.

Must be really nice to have a customer who has a vision and knows what he wants. And is even willing to pay what it takes to get that. Sounds like a great plan for the compost and discing. Giving the grass a proper start is always the way to go. Sounds like you need a lot of compost to cover all of that. About 10-15 loads? Does not have to be thick but still a lot of area.

Regarding the dust and ashes: There is at least one stuff that you might consider using (spraying?) in situations like filling the burn pit. I don't know a name. It is used by open-air coal storage (at least in the port of Amsterdam, the Netherlands) to prevent coal dust from being blown away. - If it should turn out to cost less (applying included) than your loss of productivity...

Yup, the lead or general contractor on any job is a master juggler. One missed detail will delay every step afterwards. The key to any business is to watch the details while farming out the extraneous work like books and taxes. Just find good people who will speak up and offer advice on depreciation tables and tricks to limit taxes. I even understand your desire to farm out the mechanic work mostly. Do the work that puts the most in your pocket and let the other guy have some gravy too.

A contractor I know employs 5-6 guys, and his office is the smart phone in his pocket and a tablet computer in his shoulder pack. Between text and voice messaging, social media and a website, he doesn't need much more than a mail-drop and a storage unit. Twenty years ago, he needed an office staff of three.

I would have liked to see how much deeper, if at all, that the 350 dug vs the 220. Because just from memory it looks like the 350 has an extra six feet of max depth that the 220 does. Which would make for a smaller width and length hole but certainly deeper if that was a goal. Clearly though, five to six scoops to fill Barney, makes a good contender for the 330 (if it's still around) for digging speed.

You keep mentioning the weight of various equipment when trying to compact things. The 350 has huge tracks, so it only has 7-8psi of ground pressure. The haul truck tire pressure is probably under 100psi. The tires just change shape with weight to match the tire pressure. I think the only way to actually compact soil is to use a compactor. If the trucks or equipment have the correct tires or tracks, it doesn’t matter how heavy the machine is when it comes to using it as a compactor. The tire pressure is what your soil pressure will be. Track things I’ve looked at all have less than 10 psi of ground pressure regardless of their weight, because they have the correct size tracks! Am I missing something???? I don’t think I am.
