The name of Bangkok has the name of Vishnu, the God of which Ram of Ayodhya in India is said to be an avatar of. And then similar word Ayotthya is in the name as well.

Rart-cha-tar-nee is similar to Rajadhani, meaning Capital in Hindi and Telugu as far as I know, both Indian Languages.

If you know a little Sanskrit, it deffo helps. Many words in that long name are archaic and no longer used in Thai, although they do have Sanskrit and Puli origin.

It's all derived from Sanskrit. So that is why. Most of the Thai words are same as Sanskrit with bit difference in pronunciations.

Because more than 75% of Thai vocabulary came from Sanskrit! The full name of Bangkok for example; only 'Krung' at the beginning is from Khmer, but the rest is completely Sanskrit

Did farang (western) name it Bangkok? Bangkok has such a sexual connotation, every time I mentioned it to farang their minds goes sexual because it sound similar to their slang for sex. I’m Laos and I always hear krung tet for short from Thais and Laos people.

We call it Krungtep but foreigners call it Bangkok. It’s actually from บางกอก but the romanization of the name just made it sound dirty.

Bangkok is the old name of Krungthep. Bangkok in Thai means the city of kok. Kok is makok also known as hog plum. In the old day, the area was full of these trees. So, the city was called Bangkok, the city of hog plum. Westerners knew this name before the new name Krungthep, they continued to call in Bangkok.
