I hate public transit where I'm from there's several guys on there that are not only creepy but i don't think they know what a bar of soap is and this one guy smells so bad i almost threw up in my mouth. I had to cover my nose with my coat. And the very last time i was ever on public transit someone got me deathly sick for 2 weeks. He was coughing on me not covering his mouth then he said yeah i have bronchitis and the flu then proceeds to blow his nose on his shirt and wipe it on the seat next to him. It's so fricking gross. I usually don't judge people but dang unless you're homeless and can't help it learn to use soap and deoderant it works wonders lol jeez so now i either walk or someone else takes me to where i need to go some times even a cab but that gets expensive. But yeah all in all i stay away from public transit.

Why would she give up trying to learn mandarin when knowing some of it saved her life? You would think she would continue that way she could know when she is in a situation like that again. EDIT: I almost drowned when I was younger but that just made me want to learn how to swim that way I'd never be in that situation again, It wouldn't make sense for me to never want to learn how to swim! That's just asking for a future death of drowning.

To the lady at 9:49, if you ever feel unsafe just walk up to someone who looks normal and ask them to pretend to you know you. Someone doesn't "have" to do something for you to know in your gut something is off. Don't wait until something happens to ask for help. We'd rather hear about you getting home safe then see you on he evening news. If all else fails, act crazy. That usually works, too.

We are also taught NOT to talk to strangers. Competing rules. Just do not talk to strangers. Do not be polite. Strangers are people who mean NOTHING in your life and safety. Remember the important people in your life and stop being polite just to avoid possibly hurting someone's feelings. You do not know this person. Just tell this person NOTHING or say F-CK OFF. Your safety is worth it.

Here is my story(on a bus): My family and I, my mom, older brother, and baby brother, were on vacation in California. We took a bus to get from downtown back to our hotel, anyways, I was sitting across from this huge red haired man in a stained "white" tank top. He was staring at me for about 3 minutes, my mom sitting right next to me. I would look and glance over dumbly give him a friendly smile, I was pretty dumb I guess, I was barely 12. He started to talk to me in a flirty, uncomfortable way. He said things like "Hello how are you today pretty lady?" And "Your a beauty, I like your hair" and " How old are you?" My older brother, obviously pretty pissed and uncomfortable instantly said "she is only 12 years old" he then proceeded to tell me he didn't notice I was so young, yet for the rest of the bus ride, he smiled at me, and and STARED up and down at my body for 15 mins without even trying to conceal the fact that he was doing so, makes me wonder, WHAT that man would have done if my mom and brother were not around, since my age obviously didn't matter to him as he was still pervin on me, makes me sick to my stomach his smile was so disturbing he looked like a lunatic, so creepy guy on the bus, let's never meet again

Probably a lot of them have been taught to be "polite" and to be accommodating of others, even when they're not comfortable with it. So, they end up in these scenarios where these habits take over, and they indulge and tolerate strangers who transgress on their personal boundaries.

Story #5 really hit home. I was groomed via a 1-900 chat line at age 14. I did run away while mom was at work, grabbed a taxi, caught a Greyhound bus, met him in Columbia, SC, and ran away to Los Angeles, CA. Like a complete idiot, a perfect victim. I wish ANYONE had cared enough to look for me. My mother didn't even report her only child as missing. It took years to recover from the trauma that man inflicted on my body and psyche. He stalked me for years after covenant house helped me get back to South Carolina. I'm very present for my children, very involved. It's so much easier now, with the internet, for predators to access our children. I share my experience any chance I get. If it helps even one young person, it's worth it.

I liked getting to know my city bus drivers in high school, it made me feel better knowing that I had someone familiar waiting for me inbetween home and school to get me home safely that knew me and mom. They'd update either of us where the other was going like "hey your mom's at home waiting for you, she ran some errands today and got home around lunch." I miss that close-ness with the city transit drivers, bt I take my boyfriend's bike to get to places so I don't take buses as much as I use too
