That Coe's 800m world record stood for so long is testament to his class. Even with better shoes and faster tracks athletes are struggling to get near 1.41.3

Juantorena ran like an antelope with massive stride and great natural speed. Would have been interesting to see what he could have done today with the improvement in the tracks and equipment.

that why i generally say that times dont matter. obviously world records are great and you should push for them if you're winning by clear margins, but really its about the race, and winning on the day, cos conditions vary from day to day, track to track, and era to era.

Its nice to see Coe and Juantorena on the same platform but this gathering is otherwise not worth watching after the first few minutes.

Coe could have run 1.41 with more attempts at fast times on a faster track than was available in 1981. Had he had anyone that could challenge his WR I am sure he would have focused more on getting the 800 WR down to 1.41 and spent less time on the mile/1500 WR.

I totally agree Bolt would destroy Owens , Bob hayes is a totally different character, hayes ran his fastest time on a dirt track had he had the modern facilities, nutrition , training etc Bolt would not be as dominant.

@HotChixAndMusic Bolt would destroy Owens. Bob Hayes is a different story. 7tenths is a huge margin to gain from one synthetic track to another, no matter how advanced. There are too many factors going into it

IMO Coe's run was FASTER than Rudisha's recent WR. Track surfaces have changed SO much since Coe ran his 1.41.73, that on today's quicker surfaces, I'm sure his time would equate to under 1.41. That's the problem with WR's etc, they are NOT run on the SAME surface, or even with the same shoes, from generation to generation. Tbh, I doubt Bolt is any quicker than Owens, and imo, on a cinder track with less grip, would in fact struggle to get his massive frame going.

Sorry, but there is no way Owens ran anywhere near as fast as Usain Bolt does, I can understand that Bolt would perhaps not do so well on a cinder track, but the difference between 10.3 and 9.58 is staggering. I doubt Owens would run under 10 on the same track Bolt ran on, because poorer nutrition,less effective training, and much less natural ability. Seb Coe is an amazing runner and one of my idols, but it is ridiculous to say he could run nearly a full second faster on a slightly better track

Not really - it is pretty well understood that on modern synthetic tracks you are going to gain about .75s from crappy dirt/cinder/etc. tracks.

If the track was the only consideration no, probably a bigger factor would be the advances in training methods which are much more scientifically targeted now , not to mention medical advances, injury prevention and even the running shoes, and of course the competition to push you to the limit.
