When an ad-lib gets a laugh, remember your feeling and recapture that feeling and open your mouth and speak in that attitude

Absolutely brilliant. This is a little bit advanced for the aim of the video, but you're spot on. Sometimes, you'll find yourself acting slightly different for a whole set of the first laugh comes from an ad-lib.

Great advices! I'm an open micker in Colombia. Over here it is very very common to ask people if they are a couple, so some comedians say it's hacky. Personally I think even tho is very common we should still use this, because it never stops being funny, but you can't just stay there, a good crowd work needs more than this,

Thanks for commenting, and you're absolutely right. There's nothing wrong with asking the crowd anything at all. The reason the same questions pop up time and time again is simply because those are the best questions to ask. Comedians are always going to have their opinions on what's hacky. If your set is getting consistent laughs then you're on the right track. If not... then it's highly unlikely its because you asked the audience basic questions.

Super helpful, thank you! How often do you recommend that new comics attempt crowd work during their showcase spots? I ask because newer comics may not get booked as often as seasoned comics, and it might be more ideal for newer comics to simply stick to their tight sets for the spots that count since the risk in attempting crowd work for a short guest spot may be high. Any thoughts?

Thanks for commenting. If new comics are performing at lots of open mics I urge them to perform only crowd work at one of the gigs every now and then. Regardless of how well it goes just force themselves to only talk to the audience. after all, open mics are there for comics to develop in many ways and crowd work is an important skill. However, some comics don't have access to performing as many open mics and for them It depends really on what style they want to do. If they're interested in crowd work then by all means do crowd work. You have to start somewhere and the sooner the better. Especially if you have a piece of material that always goes down well it's perfectly fine to do crowd work before delivering that piece cause you know you'll win the audience over with it regardless how the crowd work goes. The more often you do crowd work the better you'll get at it just like anything, so there's never going to be anything wrong with trying out some next chance you get, and never be too concerned with what the other acts are doing. Get as prepared as you can and perform in whatever way makes you happy, the audience will love you for it and that's all that matters.

I want to get into corporate and clean comedy. I don't like the atmosphere in the clubs. There is only 1 open mic near me. I live in a rural area. I'm 57 and I do a growing KZbin comedy channel, but want to do stand up and corporate and church gigs. How do I book myself? I appreciate your channel!
@LetsTalkComedy
@LetsTalkComedy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. I'm not too experienced with corporate gigs. I was doing quite a few of them around 2013 but really didn't enjoy them. It's a tough game to get in. The bookers need to be ensured you've got the skills to entertain their clients, who sometimes are hard to entertain. My advice would be to record your set, professionally, performing live in front of a room where you kill. Also, having a good website helps with these sort of gigs. Regarding the clean comedy, that's great, just go for it. Clean comedy isn't done too often among open mics however it does get booked on the pro level, so if you're doing well at gigs then you shouldn't have a problem getting booked. I know absolutely nothing about church gigs, never seen one. Can't help you there buddy. But for all gigs, having footage to send them of you doing what you claim to do and people responding well to it is always going to serve you well. Best of luck with it.

Gary, your tutorials are always a source of inspiration. I want to create a library to store my comic material so I can retrive my jokes. In the past, comedians used to write their jokes in exercise books, on the back of envelopes, store them on index cards, etc. Any suggestions for database suited to today's world? Tkx...

Most phones can have Note Pad Apps you can use, pretty sure Laptops can do it,record your sets and save them, and there's always a good Ole composition notebook.
@LetsTalkComedy
@LetsTalkComedy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. Indeed, it's a tough one. When I was performing stand up all the time I always had a backpack with notepads. It's hard to keep these over lingerie periods of time but I suppose that's just the way it is. Nowadays I write pretty much everything on my phone. I use the Facebook messenger app and just write the ideas to myself. In saying that, I rarely write out a whole bit anymore. Instead, I'll write out a few ideas of a bit and just try riffing on stage and see what happens.
