Listen to this guy, he’s hosted 100s if not 1000s of comedy gigs and he’s seen what works and what doesn’t.

Won my first Open Mic after about a month and a half of getting up on stage. Thank you so much. Your advice have been invaluable and I regularly watch them on repeat. All the best from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

How did the Open Mic go, for one? And how did it go over -- how was it accepted -- in Mongolia?
@SaposaBear
@SaposaBear 6 ай бұрын
@@danieljones3490 It went well. I managed to win one more open mic and get booked at a taped stand-up comedy show. I've moved to the U.S. now, and I got a little busy with schoolwork, but I would love to get back to doing it here as soon as I get a chance. :)

Great video as always. I used to focus on being different as an opener and it worked, even though I wasn't as creative as your suggestions. Hope these videos keep coming, they are making me think about setting out on the comedy journey again and must be helping active comedians no end. Cheers sir 🍻👍

This is a fantastic video. Anchoring the room first before going into your set helps keep you fresh and exciting, and that energy will flow into your prepared set which - otherwise - may feel over prepared and stale

Great vids. Request: A vid covering set durations and how to deal with hosts wanting to hit you with a flashlight for overage when it only interrupts your set rather than helps.

I'm 38 but I'm trying to do the things my mom's talked me out of doing (i have dreams, she's got steel toed boots and sociopathy.) I hope I'm not too old to start? I've had some absolutely insane experiences (ie, getting arrested while accidentally dressed like Where's Waldo, which i learned from the article about me in the paper) in the last 10 years that I couldn't have thought would ever happen in my 20s. But don't people today kind of start in college?
@LetsTalkComedy
@LetsTalkComedy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. To answer your question - No, you're never to old to start comedy. There are tons of comics who started late and some even progressed to being very successful. Obviously the goal shouldn't be on mega success cause it's just a different game. The goal, in my opinion, should be on sustaining a quality existence while pursuing your passion. I don't believe anybody is ever too old for something like that. There are, of course, other factors at play besides age though. I'm also 38 and I'm getting into dj'ing, an are that is absolutely dominated by young people and I don't care. I look forward to getting older and attempting multiple ideas, some will be silly, some will be more successful, end of the day, you're doing it for you, and the people who are going to be entertained by you. None of the rest of it matters. It also doesn't need to take over your life. If you have other commitments, you can still be there for them and do some comedy as a hobby, if it starts to pay bills, great, focus on it more. If it doesn't take over full time, you still win cause you've learnt so much from giving it a go. All the best with it.

I'm not comedian but I want to be, but I'm not funny. Now what I do ?? How can I become funny ?? Anyy tip......
@daenbermudez3740
@daenbermudez3740 2 жыл бұрын
Start watching stand up, writing other people's jokes, maybe even performing those, if they're not too famous. Analyze the jokes and delivery, see why they work. If you think of something funny, write it down and develop it immediately even if you think it's not that funny; that could give more ideas This guy has plenty of videos on how to start writing too. I heard a great tip on a video: start writing a simple sentence, then write EVERY supposition people could make about it. Then write a punchline to break those expectations. For example: Sentence: I watched a woman fall off the stairs Suppositions: - only she fell - no one made her fall - She is a stranger - She had all of their limbs - She wasn't in a wheelchair - she is in a house - she was trying to go down the stairs So braking one or more of this expectations, you could make a joke. Try it out. Reply to me with a punchline, or add suppositions I am not a comedian. This is only my inexperienced opinion
@daenbermudez3740
@daenbermudez3740 2 жыл бұрын
Actually. You should modify the first sentence too, so it matched de punchline you thought of better

Thanks for commenting. Honestly, you've no right to say you aren't funny. You've not given yourself enough time to fully understand that yet. At the beginning I wouldn't stress about being funny. Just give it a go, do a very short set and see how you feel. If you like it then you can work on being funny.

Many thanks Steve. Indeed it definitely is basic but that's the incredible thing about it. You'll discover very early on that nearly every video I have online is just hammering in the basics and getting them so they don't need any thinking at all, therefore letting you focus on just enjoying your time onstage which will make you great.

Did my third open mic the other day. Your videos have been really helpful. But I have a request. How should you handle hecklers on Open Mic? I tried to shut some down and seemed to have offended the crowd. Thanks, big fan from Mongolia.
@LetsTalkComedy
@LetsTalkComedy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. Dealing with hecklers is just going to be part of the game. Some comics love it, and some dread it. Don't worry about losing the crowd this early in the game. You're still learning and have every right to drop the ball now and then. At least you're trying this out, which matters more. I've got a video on dealing with hecklers. You can check it out here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoO7hKVurLB1gaM Hopefully there are some ideas in there for you.

I've always thought stand up would be cool! I've gotten many full belly laughs from people I tell my stories to. I'm just awful at writing. Gotta practice for sure!
@LetsTalkComedy
@LetsTalkComedy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. Writing is a great way to get ideas out, and to form jokes. However if you feel your enjoying it more by just riffing then you should continue to do that more. Getting better at writing could be 20% of your comedy practice and the rest you could focus on riffing and coming up with more material on the spot. Stick to what makes you feel good while practicing and you'll do great.
