🎤 To watch with subtitles: please click the 'CC' button on the KZbin video player :) Good evening! And welcome back to Durham, for our first narrated walking video on the channel! I really hope you enjoy this tour, and would like to see it as an addition to the channel alongside our normal walks. Do let me know what you thought of this tour in the comments. Was the narration interesting? Was there too much? Too little? And anything else that you liked or think could be improved :)

@@dlittlester Yep, I agree with Don. The narration was great; didn't affect the speed, or the feel, of the video. I think I actually prefer this style,; my eyesight is poor and I'm lazy at heart, so not having to read the commentary myself is a bonus. Others may disagree and, if you keep going with the written commentary, I won't mind. Given the choice though, I'd prefer this style.👍😁

As an old Durham lad,i really enjoyed the little walk round my favourite city. A little surprised you didn't mention the myth/legend re- The Marquis of Londonderry's statue. i.e. the creator of the statue commiting suicide because after bragging it was the most perfect statue in the world with no faults,a little boy stood underneath and pointed out that the horse was missing his tongue! Overcome with grief,he hanged himself. True or not? I don't know, but a nice local story nonetheless. Also proposed to my my wife in the Cathedral by the grave of Bishop Lightfoot. She now sadly gone due to cancer. But thanks again for taking me round "Dunholm". Ho'way the mags! Gan canny.....

My son has studied and lived in Durham for the past 5 years and is now studying for his Masters. A student of St Marys, Durham is such a special place and amongst England's famous University cities is, in my opinion, the most "real". I worked in Co, Durham during the late 80's and 90's and saw at first hand the landscape change from that of a hugely industrialised area to what it is today - a county of heritage and parkland. The past is so important but sometimes the world changes for the best. A wonderful city - one I thought I knew but your video shows I've only scratched the surface...

The monks at Durham had a summer home at Finchale Abbey about 4 miles along the river towards the coast it is best approached down through a small wood on the Chester-le-Street side of the river and across a pedestrian bridge. It is a lovely spot to bathe in the river sitting on a large submerged boulder. There is a kiosk that serves lovely tea and scones. Your driver may have to return to the car and bring it round to the car park on the Frankland side of the river if you intend to stay for a long time and picnic within the ruins of the Abbey.

This is actually quite well timed, as I’m going up there to kill a weekend. Really appreciate this. If anyone who lives in Durham can recommend anything else, good places to eat etc, I’d appreciate it even more! 😊

I’ve been watching some of your Northumberland vids, as my wife and I visited several places in the North East a few months back. Sadly we didn’t have time to visit Berwick. Anyway, well done with the narration, so much better than titles as it allows much more interesting info to be dispensed too! Also allows you to reduce distracting loud ambient sounds when necessary. Cheers

Enjoyed that very much, thank you. A suggestion for a follow-up video is to wander along the riverside to Prebend's Bridge - photographs of the Cathedral from that vicinity have been done to death but it is one of the best views in the world, nevertheless! Durham is something of an undiscovered gem (eg compared to York) and I'm torn between advertising it or keeping it's secret! As a 70's student (Van Mildert College) I'll always love the place - especially the pubs - Half Moon, Dun Cow, Colpitts, Elm Tree ......

Born and bred in Durham and although I have traveled the world I still class Durham as home. I have seen some of the most beautiful places in the world but in my eyes none can surpass Durham. It is such a shame that people are no longer allowed to go into to Castle, tourists miss out on such a lot because of Durham University.

You can, but you have to book a guided tour when the University campus is on a break.

Would love to see a walk around durhams younger brother Newcastle. Although that one could take hours because of its engineering and manufacturing history. Either way Durham is my home but Newcastle is the cool brother.

In October 2002 Sadler street, the road from the market place up to the cathedral was the first place in the UK to have a congestion charge.

Hi there! The video was filmed in late November of 2021 - amazingly just a few hours before Storm Arwen sadly swept through Durham and the surrounding area, the weather was certainly the calm before the storm... Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

When you mentioned earlier that the cart with the body of St Cuthberts got stuck, it was always told to us as we grew up that the place was at Warden Law Near Houghton Le Spring. However history is forgotten when written by newcomers.

As a lazy introvert from Edinburgh I had no clue until recently what the rest of the UK was like. Durham is definately worth a day out and Newcastle a night out imo.

In the late 1950s Durham was also the first place in the world to have cctv to control the traffic. A policeman in a box in the market square could see on a tv monitor from which direction queues were building up and he controlled the traffic lights. There are several Pathe news videos on KZbin about it

Traffic used to go up Silver Street until the 1960’s (not the mid 19thC) the street was one way up to the market place where a policeman used to stand in a box controlling traffic.

Thanks for the trip Mr Walk (or may I call you Gimbal 😁) You have a very clear and pleasant voice. However - (and there were too many 'however's !!) although extremely interesting, I felt there was far too much information and just think "who is going to remember all this" I would have much preferred some gaps in the narration to give the viewer time to view. You could always add more information in your description, which I normally read before I watch the vid. Nevertheless I want to stress that it was extremely good and well thought out and researched. Keep em coming !! ✔💯👍😁🤩

Thank you very much for that detailed feedback! Certainly there was a lot of information on this walk - and we barely even scratched the surface of Durham's amazing history! I'll try to leave a bit more breathing room in the narration though on the next occasion - so thank you for the suggestion, and of course for tuning in too!

Don't think we've heard your voice since the Twickenham / Kew video, which you mainly mumbled through with singing! 😂 It's great format you've got now excellent video which can be watched without struggling to keep up with the sub-titles, where's the singing though?
