INVERNESS | 4K Narrated Walking Tour | Let's Walk 2021

Join me for a walk around the centre of Britain's most northerly city: Inverness! Located just a stone's throw from the shores of Loch Ness, which lends its name to the city, Inverness is the historic capital of Scotland's legendary Highlands, and a treasure trove of history and gorgeous natural scenery in the country's far north.

My city! The city centre may only be a short walk from my house, but I admittedly haven't been in it for a while lol One thing about the old hospital is it was used to line up injured Jacobite soldiers to shoot them (you can even see some of the bullet indentations) while captured soldiers were taken up to the graveyard opposite the hospital (down the alley) and forced down onto a specific gravestone to be shot. Likewise, you can clearly see the bullet markings on the gravestone. The church the graveyard belongs to is the oldest in the city but it is no longer an active church as of this year.

Another lovely walk enhanced by the informative commentary. I have only stopped in Inverness once while on my 2,000 miles round Scotland learning to drive tour. We stopped on the road below the castle and ate lunch sat on the river bank, it was 53 years ago but I seem to remember the bank below the grass was stone although I could be remembering somewhere else. Mrs. Swift and I have passed through Inverness several times after rediscovering Scotland and staying in Strathpeffer, Fort William and Pitlochry among others, I know the A9 better than the A1, and it’s a much better road to drive, as are most Scottish roads.

Thanks for the memories. I was there in 1991. I'm glad the Glenalbyn pub is still there at 25:41. I enjoyed some beer there and met some locals. Also, the hotel I stayed at, the Columba, at 26:41. I do believe it was the most beautiful of all the Scottish cities I visited. Sadly, I see they've erected some really ugly huge box buildings now though.

The Castle hadn't "fallen into disrepair" the Jacobites blew it up. The French demolition expert that was helping, tried to inspect the charges after they didn't go off. Then they did go off and blew him across the river.

How is it the northern most city in the UK? What is your definition of a city? I thought the UK definition was a town with a cathedral. This being said, why isn't Kirkwall, with it's St Magnus cathedral, considered the northern most?

Having a cathedral does not automatically confer city status. City status is granted by the monarch. However, I agree that that's a belief held by a lot (possibly the majority?) of people.

A very nice video… and some good information… however there are a few issues with it. I hate being one of “those people” but this was barely even the centre of Inverness. Macbeths castle was not located where the current castle is but about half a mile north of the top of the steps near the start of the video marked as market brae, those steps will take you up into an area that if you take the first street to your left is known as the crown. It can also be accessed directly if you keep walking past those steps and rather than turn down to go back to academy street you will see a steep brae known as stephens brae (also named after a historic person) and into the crown there. Also notable is at the top of that brae is another iconic building worth looking at. The industrial area mentioned on academy street was actually a little further down than where you mentioned. The building opposite the royal hotel would have been highly worth mentioning as these were the offices of the highland railway company and still has fixtures inside from that period. You mentioned invernesses royal burgh status as being one of the oldest without mentioning dingwall just to the north which received its royal burgh status not long after and had its own storied history of royal affiliation, vikings and was the site of the largest castle in scotland barring Stirling. However the biggest omission here is 40 or so miles north the royal burgh of Tain, which received its royal charter in 1066 making it one of the oldest in the country. Also with its own storied history of royal affiliation (for anyone interested lookup St Duthus and the pilgrimage along the kings road). Some of you pronunciations though were not very good (the site of the battle I can let slip as it’s gaelic and not the easiest one to pronounce 😂, generally you need to be at least somewhat immersed in some gaelic to stand a chance haha), but the pronunciation of culloden and balnain house were very off the mark I’m afraid. Cullawden and bahlnayne would be the easier way I can write it for the point of “how to say” The part of the old high church was excellent though, not enough people are fully aware of that up here. Just a shame that you just missed some really interesting stuff from right where you passed that you wouldn’t have known about. As you passed the old Gaelic church (now leakeys bookshop) the telephone exchange was in front of you just before you turned down toward the river. If you had crossed the road and gone up the first street on your left (friars lane) you would have got to the back of the first building and seen an old gate. In there is a graveyard in a quite ruinous state and also the only surviving part of the grey friars church or abbey that once stood there. The area on the corner of the church and the river at the bottom you stopped at was known as both the maggot and the glebe at different points. Glebe street is still a name there. Glebe is a name you might know (given the other info you had) as being associated with religious sites and the maggot is an old medieval term for an older part of town which would normally be around or near church’s. Also in this area on the river bank is a crossing known in older times as the monks crossing, where the monks from grey friars and the high church would have crossed to the western bank, probably on route to beauly abbey. Sadly you also fell foul of the misinformation around the location of king Duncan’s death :(. This is a mix up of several stories regarding deaths of royal members and lairds that most likely took place at either Brodie castle or another castle that no longer exists close to Nairn. But to be fair there was a lot of really good information to wet the appetite of people who have never been here and it’s very appreciated. I grew up in the highlands and I’m also descended from a clan who once controlled Inverness haha. So any promotion of our beautiful land is always welcome.

Our tap water is far from pristine.it has as much chlorine and other chemicals as any other big city in Scotland.

It hasn't had additional chlorine for that long, there was a newspaper article over the public not that happy with the unnecessary procedure a few yrs ago. I'm sure I can taste chorine in water at times, which would suggest the correct levels aren't always maintained. It seems a lot of UK tap water uses chloramines instead of, or in addition to chlorine, which cannot be removed easily or via boiling. Adding flouride to tap water as the USA does only exists in England, with flouridation schemes around the country. There may be plans to expand this in future

We are just 30 miles east of Inverness in Moray. I take it you are using artistic licence with this video. It’s Loch not Lake and that must have been taken really early in the morning. It’s usually packed with tourists and the Gaelic language was banned. Please you do need to research a bit better.

Ive seen some amateur hour videos in my time but this one is right down there with the shabbiest ! Inverness is one of the most beautiful and photogenic places on earth ,yet this cowboy who made the recording has tried his best to make the city look downcast and average ! The narration is also like scratching a blackboard during a hangover ! Intentional or incompetence .
