Milton Keynes Town Centre Walk【4K】| Let's Walk 2021

Join me for a walk around the centre of Milton Keynes, one of the UK's most unique towns! Built in the 1960s amid a new wave of town planning, Milton Keynes is full of contrasts - home to striking modernist architecture, wide boulevards and lots of green space.
On our walk around town, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Church Of Christ The Cornerstone, intu Milton Keynes, thecentre:mk, The Point, Milton Keynes Central Market, 12th Street, Xscape, Milton Keynes Theatre, Campbell Park, The Milton Keynes Rose and The Light Pyramid.

Thanks for your video. We moved away 15 years ago and it brought back a lot of great memories. Milton Keynes is the place second to none to bring up young kids. You can literally bike or walk for miles without going near any road.

this actually brought a tear to my eye. i moved to mk after first visiting from north london when i was 18, back in 1991. i fell in love with the architecture, the open spacen and red routes, giving you an amazing sense of freedom, all the while, having everything you need in the centre or hidden away behing trees and bushes. unfortunately now the council have started destroying the awesome town with its departure from the classic grid system and under paths etc, not to mention going against the rule of "no building over the height of the trees" which was something that was kept to with the enitial building of mk. its now just slowley becoming just like any other over built and over populated new town. spreading like a plague from the centre outwards. :-( rip milton keynes, it was a pleasure being part of you when you were still great.

Other than no buildings higher than trees, it's still kept to being green and the grid system. It's still one of the best places to live in the UK and has gotten better. It's a lot cleaner too.

Thanks for this walk. I moved to MK in 1985 to work at The Point..it's certainly a unique place, I could go on forever but it's as a unique a place as any ancient town in the uk. The local council just needs to take care of it, ...most people don't realise just how important some of the architecture will become. The Point was the first multi-screen cinema in the UK, pathetic by todays' standards but unbelievable in 1985; It had a restaurant, Brasserie, Nightclub (&Bingo!). The original shopping centre was probably the last great public building in the UK, it defied the bunker like structures of other shopping centres and is very tall and light. The listed building status has probably saved it from the developers; it originally had no external barrier doors and was a true 'high street' that could be walked through at any time. The structures you walked under on the Boulevards ('Porte Cochere') are getting very tatty and need rescuing, The marble lined underpasses are pretty unique and need saving. The grid road plan is being overridden. Originally there were meant to be no tall buildings allowed, but I think that this has been successful - they add interest to the skyline.

What I love most about M.K are the red ways and parks trust. Its a beautiful place to go and walk about. I think alot of people just drive into the centre and complain its a concrete jungle. Its really not. Its an amazing place thats been very well thought out in its design. It has so many tree's and parks, its a beautiful place.

Lived in MK since 1980. Absolutely love it. I hardly ever go to the City Centre. When driving around the place, the trees, open space, green areas, red ways, lakes & surrounding countryside always make me smile. Possibly a marmite place. You either love or hate it.

I moved here in March 1971, Bletchley, Stony Stratford, Wolverton were the small towns making MK, gradually all being joined by the fantastic grid road system. So far this walk has only got to the end of CMK starting at the station end, and as typing this it’s at the Theatre District. The whole of MK is always one big building and regeneration system. When I arrived here on the train from London to Bletchley the signs just outside Bletchley read Milton Keynes, London Overspill Town. Now it’s like a little London. More languages are spoken here than at Waterloo Station in London. However, I wouldn’t want to leave MK and no amount of money would ever tempt me to go back to London. Lastly, this walk must have been made very early on a Sunday morning in the main lockdown. Where are the people and traffic.

being an amateur fan of urban design MK raised my attention a long time ago. I recall asking the then dev corp for info which I still keep somewhere. That was back in the late 80s or so. aerial views of hyper succesful MK are simply stunning as you can appreciate the scale of the endeavour those forward looking planners carried forward some 50yrs ago!! brasilia, MK and canberra are outstanding examples of that age, wonder is they are unesco world heritage sites at all

I grew up there in the 80s/early 90s and left as soon as I could, eventually settling in the centre of the universe: Liverpool! But my family love it there and I have affection for Newport Pagnell where I lived. The surrounding towns and villages are lovely.

My family came to the village of Great Linford in what is now Milton Keynes with the Normans just after 1066, the area has a lot of history if visitors are willing to look outside the shopping centre. Some of us original local families are still here.

I managed to meet a lovely polish girl too on my 22nd birthday who I should have never let go but was too young to settle. Hi there! Milton Keynes was deliberately designed with cars in mind, so walking to and from some places takes a little longer than many other places in the UK. That said, it's nowhere near as big as American cities, and many of the shops are all concentrated in one place. Public transport is good, with lots of buses in and around MK that can get you pretty much anywhere in the town :) Thanks for watching, and I hope I've helped out with your question!

Unfortunately the Libdems running the council with Labour support has harmed the city, many changes to the town have been made to its detriment and they are all in breach of the original MK master plan. For example, the replacement of a roundabout with traffic lights at H5 portway / V6 junction near Network Rail HQ, filling in and building on green spaces, parking charges, closure of dual carriageway car crossings, filling in of underpasses, 40 MPH limits on grid roads, 'city streets', expansion beyond MK's original size.. MK Parks Trust having too much power, The too tall thing with narrow streets and no parking - that is The Hub, Willen Lake Parking charges... the list goes on....

Another thing people misunderstand about MK is that so many buildings in the center are mirrored because they were designed to reflect the greenery and sky in which they exist. That's an interesting question! In my experience, the MK accent is fairly neutral, tending towards a more southern/London accent than anything, simply because the town is home to lots of different people from different places, all mixing together :) If anybody else has some input please do get involved - it's an interesting query! Original North Bucks local accent can still be heard, especially older people. Those that lived in Stony, Newport Pagnell and Wolverton had an accent that was a bit like Northampton but slightly more rural. But the majority of people in MK now are incomers or 2nd generation incomers from all over, and the largest proportion from the London area, so the accent is becoming influenced. There are also sub culture accents same as in other UK urban places. So what I’m saying is, there is more than one local accent but people are just completely used to accents from anywhere.

The point used to be a vibrant place but is now being neglected by councillors who want to line their pockets by tearing it down and building something else there. Thankfully retail is so terrible at the moment no-one wants it. also, MK councillors want to get rid of the Market which is amazing and been a hub of the town since the beginning. Councillors are often awful people who just want to line their own pockets...

I really hope that even if the Point is eventually demolished we'll find a place for the pyramid. Even if the building beneath it needs to go (and I think it probably does) we should keep that structure as an iconic landmark. We have the space for it. Would be good to see it lit up red again.

People like to whine about Milton Keynes, mostly miserable people who have nothing better to do with their time than grumble about everything. The fact is MK is the greenest city in the country and it has been since its inception. You'll never find yourself in a traffic jam, thanks to the roundabout and grid system. Homes are insulated from traffic noise thanks to the clever design of roads within man made valleys around the housing estates. Most people have playing fields within a 2 minute walk of their front door. You can walk or cycle absolutely everywhere and hardly have to cross a main road. Every year there are thirty or more concerts, festivals and events in Campbell Park, Willen Lake, The Bowl, Bradwell Abbey, Bletchley, Wolverton and within the housing estates themselves. I personally really miss The Point as a venue. I never got to see the famed rock club in the top in the 80s and 90s. I spent many a great evening as a teen going on dates to the cinema and playing in the arcades. A few years later we were visiting the pub on the main level when everything else had basically shut down. Thanks for the walk. It's really quite amazing how much MK has changed since the 80s, and yet it's still kept much of its original spirit. I hope that continues.

Can't believe Milton Keynes is a city. Its been there about 50 years and no character apart from the lakes, no real history or charming older buildings & about as exciting as its crime rate. Bedford should have got that one as it has character & a great hub for business with its links, Top Acadamys & Private Education, classic buildings, Beautiful river, parks & history & travel links by road & rail. Milton Keynes is a joke; pinch me someone.

Absolutely loads of history and older buildings. Same river that runs through Bedford goes through MK first.MK is on M1, A5 and West Coast Mainline. Grown to more than double the size of Bedford in 50 years and left it way behind economically. There’s your pinch.

The fact that you claim there's "no history" here shows your idiocy. Bletchley Park - home of WW2 codebreakers, the invention of the modern computer, and the genius of Alan Turing. Wolverton and Stony Stratford - Industrial powerhouses throughout the industrial revolution. Wolverton - Home of Great Monks Street - the clue is literally in the name. I could go on, but you're very obviously an idiot with a very peculiar axe to grind. Oh, EDITED to add that we also have ancient Roman ruins, a 16th century hunting lodge and Bradwell Abbey!

@@lynnking606 Bedford has its charm, but this guy is clearly a little demented in his thinking. There's not much about Bedford which has any nationally relevant history. Most of it is post-war building, condensed and overcrowded, a noisy and polluted place with less character and less space than MK. You can go through the center of Bedford and drink in some nice old pubs, but you can do that in MK, too. This guy clearly has no idea that Bletchley, Wolverton and Stony even exist lol

Very interesting and full of facts. It is the greenery that cements and enhances the modern (and old) architecture . Maybe they could plant more evergreens for the winter months. When first built it was so relaxed with free parking. Now that it has expanded so much I think that more of these types of new towns should be built around the UK. Unfortunately politicians these days are only interested in their own pockets and have no positive visions for communities. There .are many homeless in MK. It is very similar to the Amsterdam South East area, called the Bijlmer, where the Ajax arena is. I have a vid on the Gaasperpark that lies within that area. Unfortunately the council there is trying to get its hands on it and turn it into an events place and even build on it. They have already demolished much nature and many trees during ithe Bijlmer transformation after an air crash in 1992. The concept of the Bijlmer was also started in the 70s and could easily be a little sister of MK. It became a hood during the 80s but has improved.
