*** Please read if you have any concerns about the information presented in this video *** Good evening! And welcome to our very first walk in Northern Ireland, around the enthralling, historic walled city of Derry, also known as Londonderry! There's so much history to this amazing city, and I really hope you enjoy following along as we tour the city, pass by its most famous landmarks, and learn about its back story. However, owing to the politically sensitive nature of a number of the topics presented throughout this walking tour, I understand that you may have some concerns, which I hope I can address here by answering a few questions. - Are you an expert on the history of Northern Ireland? No, absolutely not. I am simply fascinated by world history, and the way in which individual towns and cities have played a role in it. Like all other videos on this channel, this is in no way an exhaustive or complete history of Derry. While the walk is over an hour long, this is by no means enough time to explore the history of this magnificent city in the depth that it truly deserves, and so please treat this video as a brief window into just a few of the most fascinating parts of Derry and its history. - Have you taken steps to avoid bias in the portrayal of history in this video? Like all videos on this channel, I make every effort to provide as balanced, neutral and accurate a portrayal of history as I can. That being said, being limited by time and natural limitations I am not able to include every necessary detail to explore the events of Derry's history, and so oversights and omissions of important information on certain topics will be present in this video - I apologise for any upset or offense that this may cause, it is in no way intentional on my part. Once again, this video is by no means a complete history of Derry, but it has been created after multiple weeks of research garnered from a wide variety of sources. I also spent three days in Derry out of a wider nine days in Northern Ireland learning about the city and talking to locals where possible to get their perspective on the topics that this video deals with, which I feel brings an important dimension to the information presented in this video. - Why do you refer to the city as 'Derry', and not 'Londonderry'? As explained in the video, the official, legal name of the city is Londonderry, yet I refer to it as 'Derry' in almost all cases in this narration. During my time in the city and Northern Ireland as a whole, I came to understand that 'Derry' is simply more commonly used in everyday speech by people on both sides of the political divide. Therefore, in tandem with further research when making this video, I felt that the use of 'Derry' was the most appropriate for this narration. The use of 'Derry' over 'Londonderry' is in no way a statement of my own support for one side of political debate over another. - Why is the photo of Edward Daly during Bloody Sunday cropped? The iconic photo of Edward Daly during the Bloody Sunday massacre is cropped when presented in this video, showing only Daly waving a handkerchief, and not the group of people carrying a mortally-wounded protestor behind him. This cropping is in no way meant to hide, devalue or ignore the violent horror that occurred on Bloody Sunday, I have only used a cropped image (Credit: BBC News) to remain in line with KZbin's Terms of Service, and to ensure that this video is not removed for the graphic imagery that can be seen behind Edward Daly in the original, uncropped image. I hope that this helps clear up any concerns that you may have about the information in this video, if you have any other questions or concerns, please do feel free to comment below, but please remember to be civil and respectful if engaging in any discussions with fellow viewers. Many thanks.

It took some courage to tackle Derry in this series but, as your narrations are always impartial, I see no possible harm in showcasing this beautiful, historic city. A whole generation missed-out on Northern Ireland as a tourist destination and it's good to hear that tourism is boosting their economy nowadays. A film like this can only help to promote the place. 👍

The Derry Girls mural looks really good. The show is HILARIOUS. Erin, Orla, Michelle, Claire and James just have me laughing all the time. It's a shame that Lisa McGee decided to end the show after only three series, but boy is it the funniest sitcom in recent years.

I really enjoyed the tour. I was stationed in Derry from November 1972 through November 1974 at the US Navy Communications Station on the Waterside of the city. Was buying some furnishings for our flat at Austins when the clothing store next door was bombed. Still, even with the troubles going on I loved the city and its people. It is so nice to see how Derry has cleaned up and is so beautiful.

Good video, pretty even-handed regarding the History of Derry, Though only a brief overview. The city has come a long way because of people on both sides who live here. The future is a lot brighter and our younger citizens can look forward to better days. Thank you for highlighting the City.

I love Derry, it is so beautiful! I was there in early 2000, when army was still there. It must be amazing for people to have them gone! I also hope that the kids stopped throwing rocks and bottles at people passing under the walls at night, it was quite scary. Compared to other cities in Britain, it feels like they are really taking care of Derry and keeping it beautiful. Sure, the city is not rich by far but I feel that more people should like to live there. The university building is really beautiful at night as well.

As a Derry man you did a good job highlighting our city ,but maybe you didn’t know that in 1977 we had a very special guest that paid us a visit in the shape of a killer whale which made its way up to as far as the city centre from the open Atlantic .I skipped a few days of school to see it ,great memories.

The thing you didn't press on that st. Colomkill Church was funded and built by protestants for the Catholic comunity inside the walls even tho the Catholic Church did not recognise the Presbyterian religion at the time it was built...I am a protestant and I call it derry because of the name ....the apprentice boys of derry and the Royal derry regiment " the derrys".......BUT on the easter lily that stands in front of derry corner I do have to say it does look like a statue that resembles a remale part....I also find it concerning how when people who come to derry they only concentrate their videos on how the Catholic people and their struggles but no one touches on the fact that derry and the out laying areas and estates were mixed and after bloody sundy under the orders of Martin mcguinness the protestant comunity were to be burned out, threatened by petrol bombs and by gun which was called the exodus where all of the protestant who lived in the city side fled to the waterside out of fear for their families and the only people to stand and fight were the people of the fountain
