A wonderful movie, the story, dialogue and performances were masterfully-done! I always love seeing the architectural-design, decor, furnishings and fashions in these classic-films as well; through the telling of the story, and the staging, I’m transported to an earlier time, a different place and life! Thank-You so much!!

Thank you for the wonderful bittersweet film, Letter of Introduction, with a great cast. What I found noteworthy, however, was the fact that Edgar Bergen did double duty with drama and comic relief, at a time when movies used comic actors for just the comic relief, depending on the film. But who did it better? Was there any wonder why Bergen's radio show on NBC back when this film was released in 1938 was the top rated program on the air, even competing with Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre production of the H.G. Wells classic story, The War of the Worlds, on CBS on October 30, 1938 when this country thought that men from Mars actually invaded the Earth, bombarding the CBS switchboard with numerous phone calls. Thankfully, it was all a hoax. But the growing threat of war in Europe contributed to the fears of Americans and others around the world that something sinister was lurking. Of course, Adolphe Menjou turns in a great performance as the drunken stage actor who meets his estranged daughter (Andrea Leeds) for the first time. Thanks again.

Really excellent film! With a true-to-life ending. They could have taken the usual "easy way out," but instead went for some bittersweet realism. Very satisfying. Highly recommended.
@angelsaltamontes73363 жыл бұрын
Edgar Bergen's bittersweet realism was the taproot of Kurosawa's later angst, as Fritz Lang's feng shui came to Charlie McCarthy's mind whenever he (McCarthy) was laying face-down in Bergen's suitcase. Life is a ferriswheel turned merry-go-round and vice versa, for some just a carousel: some, the Bergens, Kurosawas and Langs, are luggers; others, the McCarthys. are luggage.

Charlie McCarthy was so popular he was one of the stars in several movies in the 30s and 40s. Thanks for making it available.
@Hotshotter30007 жыл бұрын
He was fucking everywhere. You can't watch any cartoons of the era without bumping into him. No ventriloquist will ever have that level of popularity. Imagine if Jeff Dunham's Peanut or Walter characters just appeared at random everywhere on TV today. In the 1940s to 1960s, there were around 400 full-time ventriloquists working, now there are only around 15. The movie makes it look like they're a dying art in the 1930s... today it would have decomposed beyond belief.

Fantastic movie. I didn't expect to laugh so hard. It seemed like a true and very touching story. Andrea Leeds stared in films for just 7 years. She had casual dates with Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy pupeteer master and future father of Candice Bergen) until she retired from film with her only marriage to raise her 2 children. Her father-in-law owned and raced Seabiscuit! I loved her sincere character. She reminded me a little of Myrna Loy. Thanks for this treasure!

The opening scene of this movie reminded me of a story my grandmother used to tell me . Her name was Annie ,she was born in 1912 In Charleston South Carolina. she and her brother would run behind the fire truck when it came down the street with its bell ringing. One particular day She and her brother are returning from an errand for her mom, it just so happened the firetruck came roaring by, they ran behind it it ended up at their house. She said she never chase a fire truck again.

The 1930's fashions never looked so glamorous as they do in this movie. My grandmother was a fashionably-dressed "flapper" with her husband in the 1920's. I always thought of the 30's as the depression and very un-glamorous. But, these actors, both male and female, had true panache.

Enjoyable flick, although some of the Bergen/McCarthy scenes (great as they are) seem shoe-horned in, which can bring the main plot to a screeching halt. But excellent cast, including in minor roles Kathleen Howard and William Lundigan. But there's never enough Eve Arden, one of my all-time favorites! Surprised George Murphy wasn't given more dance time here, since he was a song & dance man.

Edgar Bergen is very talented and I understand that, in this movie, he has to keep in practice for his act. But I became pretty annoyed with him to the point of creepiness. Anyway, it must be therapeutic to be a ventriloquist. -- you can say what you really want through the dummy. If it's sarcastic or otherwise offensive, people laugh anyway because the dummy said it, not the ventriloquist. Maybe it catches up with the ventriloquist, though, unless he makes fun of himself enough, too. I really enjoyed the movie. Thank you, PizzaFlix, for posting.
