This kind of stuff was done previously by the guy who actually invented the form a few decades earlier: Steve Allen, host of the Tonight Show going back to the 50's. Check him out! Amazingly talented and funny. Man on the street gags, props, etc. Allen did it all. Letterman once wore a suit made of velcro and stuck himself to a wall. Steve Allen wore a suit made of teabags and was dipped in a tank of water. I think they're both great. But a lot of things that Letterman gets credited for inventing were invented many years before he started working on TV.

@@nomadcowatbk This was about the point it became affordable. Parents bought a bag phone around 93-94, it was about $35/month for 0 minutes ($77 today) + 0.25 a minute (55 cents today). Keep in mind, if you were to stop and use a payphone, you'd be spending a quarter anyway.

Little Known Fact: my own mother wanted me to try out for The Replacement Of Dave Competition when he quit because she always wanted me to drive around and prank people who have no choice but to answer the phone or the drive-thru buzzer. It was tremendous pressure! Thank goodness Regis got the job.
