@joanb259 Жыл бұрын
She was not. She's thought to be born in 1941 or 1945, so at least she was in her 40s by the time.
@@joanb259 Oh great, this again. The dispute comes from the fact that at the time she came to the United States, her listed date of birth was 1941. A Spanish judge later listened to parental testimony and made an official determination that the 1941 date was incorrect and 1951 was correct. People tend to assume that was a fiction and that she was trying to portray herself as younger than she is. However, they overlooked that at the time she came to the United States, 1951 would have made her too young to work as well as potentially too young to marry Cugat. A lot of people don't realize historically, is more common than they think for someone to have claimed to be _older_ than their real age for a variety of reasons, including work eligibility, marriage, military service, and so on. I get why a lot of people find it convenient to believe the older date is the right one, but I personally lean toward believing the younger one is correct, and in my defense, that is an official determination by the Spanish courts and not just a vain claim made to the media.

She explains that at the time she emigrated to the United States, she would not have been able to work as a professional musician if she had told her real (younger) age. I'm aware most people are only familiar with the phenomenon of women pretending to be younger than they really are out of vanity, but there is also a less familiar phenomenon of both women and men representing themselves as older than their real age for purposes of work eligibility, marriage military service, and other reasons.

The hurricane Dave referenced was Gloria, which according to Wikipedia, was moments from landfall in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It made landfall around my neck of Long Island (Freeport, two blocks from Baldwin Bay) at noon, by then riding along a cold front that I assume was the cause of rain that led to Charo's frizzy hair the day before. I was almost 4 years old (November 17) and don't remember much outside of flooding at ground level of our house. I'm told that power was only out for a few days, owing to Freeport's own utilities. LILCO customers were without power for up to two weeks. Had I lived in Wantagh, where I moved in 1993 (inland, this time), I would have been one of those customers (or the son of one, anyway). I would go through extended outages from Irene in 2011 (five days) and Sandy in '12 (nine days). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Gloria
