Gary Weber discusses his techniques and perspectives on meditation, presence, and allowing. He talks about his own awakening, the "default mode network", the collection of "I's" collapsing into the present moment, persistent Nonduality, psychedelics, the evolution of thinking, and has thinking in the modern-day human outlived its purpose?
Gary Weber is an American spiritual teacher and author from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania who offers talks, online videos, and a blog on non-duality. As a retired scientist, executive and military officer, Weber has become known for combining a scientific approach to non-duality with traditional techniques of meditation, yoga, and chanting. He is a frequent speaker at the Science and Nonduality Conference and has participated in several high-profile studies on neuroscience and meditation. He is the author of three books, has given numerous talks and interviews, and, with Richard Doyle, has produced a series of online video dialogues on questions related to spirituality, science, and non-duality.
Science and Nonduality is a community inspired by timeless wisdom, informed by cutting-edge science, and grounded in direct experience. We come together in an open-hearted exploration while celebrating our humanity.

Thank you for this talk on stillness and presence. Here is an excerpt from the writings of Marshall Vian Summers about a deeper mind that we all can access which he calls Knowledge. "Knowledge is with you completely, but you are not with Knowledge... Your hours and your days and your weeks pass by with your mind somewhere else, preoccupied, overwhelmed, overtaken by your circumstances.. feelings... moods etc. Until the mind can serve a greater purpose, until it can be reeled in and directed according to the Grace and spiritual Wisdom that live within you, then it is a reckless instrument... Yet now you have the opportunity to bring the mind into focus, to arrest its recklessness and to give it direction, purpose and meaning, which it desperately seeks in all things. So return to this fundamental lesson: 'Knowledge is with me, but where am I?'... And if you have the opportunity and the time, ask yourself, 'Is there anything I need to know at this moment?'... And over time, the mind will become much more present, discerning and observant." (MVS, Steps to Knowledge Continuation Training)

There are lots of non dual parrots but this guy is the real deal. The important point is your brain needs to change how it operates to experience and live in non-duality. This is very different to the parrots who say there’s nothing to do which is unfortunate.

Nature/Spirit never intended humans to live without an "I" which is the Soul or Self. Non dual is solipsism. It is one realization among infinite realizations. The problem comes when neophytes experience Unity and interpret it as the whole Truth. The integral path is the only true and complete path.

@@Magik1369 I would say he is well experienced if not an expert in this path, and we need to clarify what we mean by the "I". I would not hehehe say that you need or that the "I" was intended since we don't know that. Now I will say that in relation to the Frank Self that if you were to get rid of that kind of self as its defined that you would not be worse off in you well being, and your daily functioning, if not even better. This sense can come back in certain situations if it's manner of solving a problem is more efficient, id guess.

There is nothing to do means that you can’t prescribe or meditate or practice your way out of it, a mental shift is no form of doing but rather of inner realization. When the weight of the “I” is directly experienced and recognized by the person, their life begins to naturally shift and the naturally move away from those patterns. It is like when you see a delicious cake in front of you, and just as you prepare to dig in, the chef lets you know that the special ingredient is rat poison. Now you will not eat the cake, not because you have meditated or practiced your way away from consumption, but because you know the truth about the consequences of indulging.

@@sonikwro As Gary points out there absolutely must be an "I" when using language, because that's how it's structured. While there might be only one "I" in an ultimate sense, that doesn't mean there aren't things ("individuated units of consciousness", in Tom Campbell's terminology) which can legitimately call themselves an "I", and which _must_ do so when using verbal language to communicate with each other. Even Krishna in the Baghavad Gita uses the word "I" (translated into English, of course). Everything is a dream, and all dreams are real.

Are you saying Krishna was incorrect and suffering in an illusion because he used the words "I" and "you" when talking to Arjuna?
@halfacanuck
@halfacanuck Жыл бұрын
@@sonikwro To put it another way: you seem to be implying that it's possible for a relationship (of love and tolerance) to exist between me and the "one I"; but a relationship requires three things: the two which are related, and the relation. You can't in one breath insist there's only one thing, then in the next breath tell me it can have a relationship with other things. Even to say "the one" with any meaning requires that there be another which isn't the one against which to contrast it, otherwise it cannot be delineated and identified; and to say there is the-one and not-the-one is to say there are _three_ things, those being the-one, not-the-one, and both together. Three, in fact, is the smallest possible natural number. Not one, not two, but three. Perhaps you're one of those people who've missed the point entirely and mangle their language in order to avoid using the word "I", which is a mere word game because it's impossible to remove the subject from a subject-verb-object language, just as it's impossible to remove the ball from a basketball game. It's there by definition. The point is to eliminate the automatic "I thoughts" from one's experience, and thinking in terms of a "one I" (even though, as I said above, that can't really exist concretely but is just a concept) can help achieve that. But it shouldn't be mistaken for reality itself. It's a conceptual tool which can be abandoned once the mind settles into what Gary calls the "sweet stillness". I suggest it might be worth asking yourself whether your unsolicited lecturing of people on KZbin might be a distraction from that goal. The point is to silence your own mind, not "fix" other people's ideas.

William James said the same thing in his chapter on 'The Self' in the Principles of Psychology (1890): "A man has as many social selves as there are individuals who recognize him." Gary is wonderful to listen to. The deafening and comically dramatic musical interludes are not. 🤫

In one video Gary said that the default network and the task mode network do not run simultaneously. It is binary. You can switch between modes but at any given time the brain is is one or the other. I find this useful in shutting of the blah, blah from the default network (which is a huge liar via natural selection). It is interesting that Jesus said "You can't serve two masters". He didn't have the neural coordinates, but I think he was describing the how the brain works in an intuitive context.

There is more to Buddism - the 8 fold noble path is the way out of suffering. That’s the study and practice of ethics - at least that’s what I was taught. In some Buddhist monastaries or schools you are onlyballowed to meditate after you have been able to show a full understanding of ethics. At least that is what I was taught. Meditation is such a powerful tool according to this that in the hands of those who do mot have ethics it can be dangerous.

"You know, sir, unless we keep our house in order, meditation and other things have no value. Right? If my house, which is me, is not in complete order, without any conflict, what is the point of meditation? It is another escape, another illusion. But when my house is in order, completely, without any shadow in my house, then meditation is something entirely different. But we think by meditating, god knows what, then your house will be in order. See how deceptive we are." Jiddu Krishnamurti

Traumatic experiences affect people's neurology, as well as their sense of self. I think it's important to have a an integrated sense of self before doing this kind of work. Mind states like depersonalization / derealization would not, in my opinion, benefit from these kinds of transcendent experiences. Looking at Thicht Nhat Hahn's teachings about inter-being, you might say that one must *be* before they can *inter-be.*

Leonardo da Vinci said "The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions " Plato shared with. us wisdom he learnt from Egypt, wisdom that was a death sentence in Greece, Rome (Christianity) ..Pythagoras, Socrates and later Hypatia of Alexandria. Plato in his dialogue "The Republic " tells the parable of "The Cave " Plato starts by telling us of prisoners being held in a underground den, let us examine this den via the geometry of Bernhard Riemann and Felix Klein..Klein bottle..3rd and 4th dimensions. Plato tells us that the prisoners are bound up unable to move their heads, let us examine this bondage via the psychology of Erich Fromm..socialisation of consciousness.. aware-unaware. Plato tells us that the prisoners mistake shadows for substance, let us examine this mistake via the philosophy of Thales, Hume and Kant..synthetic a priori judgement..not thing in itself. Plato tells us that one of the prisoners is released, let us examine this release via the wisdom of T Lobsang Rampa..stilling the mind and conscious astral travel..leaving the cave/body. Plato tells us that the prisoners will reject this release, let us examine this rejection via the psychology of Stockholm Syndrome..Plato quotes Homer..forgive them for they know not what they say. Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds. Mathew 23 13 31.

There is no separate 'you' inside your body to let go of anything. There is no 'I'. Thoughts come and go automatically, just like your heart is beating and your breathing happens. You aren't doing anything. This complete realisation happens or doesn't happen. Once this is realised, you give yourself a break and everyone else. People need to stop looking for teachings and teachers. It's a rat wheel. Everything is energy and spontaneously happening. These words were typed by no separate individual. Weber is sincere and he has certainly shined a light on the DMN and it’s role in the sense of separate self. That said, I have never heard him address the nature of the whole. He confines himself to brain mechanisms that are subject to scientific investigation. In so doing he seems to avoid, or never bother to posit an explanation of the fundamental substrate of reality. He seems to be a physicalist who believes that consciousness is a product of the brain rather than that fundamental substrate. He avoids the hard problem, as far as I know.

How does this process of stopping of those “me” referential thoughts affected by neurologically inherited emotional dis regulation conditions like Aspergers, ADHD, and PRSD, bipolar. It has been shown these brains physically different compared to the average, and have a different neuro chemistry (I.e. lower dopamine and serotonin). So even if that brain was trained to shut the “me” part down, that body will still have these brain conditions and behave accordingly, possibly now more free to be forgetful distracted, get emotionally intense when triggered. The difference is there’s no “me” to interpret this as a problem anymore. There’s no bliss or good vibe here to make the brain stay interested in present moment though. The sense of the person controll ing things is still here, but it’s seen as an overseer of a neurologically diseegulated body

Love Gary but he's making a mistake in assuming that the area of the brain _correlated_ with the experience of e.g. self-and-other _causes_ the experience. This is not necessarily true, and in the opinion of a rapidly growing number of people who have rejected materialism (as well as countless sages throughout the ages--including, funnily enough, Ramana Maharshi) probably isn't true: matter manifests in consciousness, not the other way around; a brain is a view on (part of) a mind, not the generator of it.

It is not known. Nobody knows, so nothing wrong with models. And there is no "conciousness" as something existing apart from everything else. It is teaching model as well. is gary still speaking publicly, or rather, is this interveiew from this year? i haven't been able to find any public appearances after 2018. i did the whole spiritual cafeteria for over a decade, and ramana's teachings, specifically filtered through gary, got me over a huge slump in my practice. its funny how i feel gratitude for him, while at the same have an intuitive understanding we're all a continuum of awareness happening, so there isn't any'one' to thank or be thanked.

They want us to remain slaves to consumerism because they are yet slaves to their "egoic" minds as well. They believe their happiness (peace of mind) is dependent upon maintaining and gaining ever more status, power, and material wealth, and thus, they believe they need us to continue running in the "hamster wheel" to feed their "needs". That is why the consumtption of alcohol, sugar, caffeine, technology, and anti-depressants is so highly encouraged. People in power want us to remain cogs on the gears of the society that churns out what they think they need for well-being. In short, they are sleepwalking zombies who think enlightenment is a religious fantasy and thus another tool of deception and subjugation. P.S. The girl in your avatar is beautiful.

Why not? Why should they suffer both physical hunger and the mind's worrying and anxiety about it? Worry and anxiety depletes the energy and capacity for creative thought. The more hungry people worry about their hunger, the less likely they are to come up with a solution that can help them solve their lack of food.

@@-a-l-t- Thought maintains the brain? Huh? Does an ant need thought to drink water and eat food? Yes, there are useful, non-egoic (non-identifying/claiming) thoughts, like how many minutes should I cook this burger, but there is certainly space between thoughts. You may have a different definition of thinking, but for me, simply experiencing sensations (visual, auditory, etc.) does not always involve thinking. Often, there is no thought, just seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, feeling, without any conceptualizing occurring about that.

Um, the brain does NOT create any reality. It is a READER of vibrations or coordinates on the Universal map. The brain/body is etheric technology. And it is one with the Soul. The map is infinity. The soul is the map, is infinity. The body is the soul is the map is infinity. So with all these mystical blah, how come you guys are still aging. Being in the now is having access to all that is, which is immortality or infinity... Hm

The first question is not a great question. Enlightenment or waking up, has NOTHING to do with spirituality lol. That's just a connection that fakes use, those self proclaimed "Guru's" who sell books saying what people want to hear and crystals and push meditation and such. Enlightenment is just Truth realized, nothing more, nothing less. The realization that there is no you, never was, never will be. You are nothingness, everything is nothingness.
