The Michael Singer Podcast: Season 3, Episode 2
There's nothing even remotely spiritual about going through life reacting to events. In this episode, Michael Singer explores how to become aware of our emotional reactions, navigate the energies that drive them, and learn to respond to triggering events with greater consciousness.
About The Michael Singer Podcast:
Join the New York Times bestselling author of The Untethered Soul, The Surrender Experiment, and Living Untethered for this free series of curated teaching sessions, recorded at his Temple of the Universe yoga and meditation center.
Meet Your Host Michael A. Singer:

The things to which we might react are thousands. The techniques to not react are few. Be present. Do not auto respond to anything. If you have an urge, resist until the urge passes. And may I add to distract yourself from reacting, do box breathing: breathe in 4 seconds, hold 4 seconds, breathe out 4 seconds, hold 4 seconds…repeat until calmness resumes.

Agreed - it is simple. And 'essy' only after commitment and consistency. I would include the 'technique' of gratitude. Bring to mind -and heart where one experiences gratitude ... bathe in that stuff! 😉✌️🫶💪

@@journeyoflovelightin most situations when I auto-react, the person I'm talking with will not really notice when I stop talking and focus on breathing. By the time I'm ready to respond, they didn't notice anything. I always need to remind myself that we're always in our heads, and so everyone else must be just as focused on themselves.

I have been taught that if the reaction is fear then it’s not intuition. He stated that but it’s not easy to know your true thoughts if you’re in a narcissistic relationship or any mental health or stressful state. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t tell. Noticing it and asking is worth celebration and then the next time you try to hug your inner self for that. And keep trying.

I agreed with all that's been said until it mentioned there's never a need to change or manipulate the outside world, or "fight". Unfortunately this is where your spirituality is incomplete. There certainly is a need to set boundaries...setting rules and standards of practice, which will at times trigger other people's fight response. In the same way that we must be "capable" of self restraint, we must also be "capable" of self protection and self expression without getting caught up in the negative energy of it all. It's like a detached way of meeting the needs of the moment.

I'm in that place right now where I had all these beautiful experiences as I opened up and I began to over share them with everyone around me which eventually made me want to be right and approved of, and that lack there of caused me to doubt the initial experience. Now it feels like being turned inside out where the focus is on being understood rather than enjoying the journey I was on. It's especially hard when change happens because it feels like I need to protect myself.

Most people are in autopilot they are not aware of whats really going on. Most people ive met are in reaction to their experiences. We do create our own suffering by wanting things outside of ourselves to be a certain way. We think that if the outside is the way we want the inner would be okay.

@sannajohanna5579

I am happy to hear that the uncomfort means improvement. Today, after the work - which was fine, I was happy about my accomplishments and kind words I had said to some people - I sat in the bus, thought about my life and myself and felt bad. I see all kind of vehaviours in myself that are mostly destructive. I felt to cry. I thought: Ok, it is gonna be like this the rest of my life, seeing all my faults every time, seemingly not getting rid of them. Especially, when I think about my past actions, I cannot understand myself. Or- yes, I can, but being reactive has not been helpful at all! My life would look happier if I had just let it all go! I still hang on them. Now I oractise to let go and I notice, that I can hold „letting go“ for few seconds, then the mess in my mind starts again. It IS terrible. Then I came home, this video came to me and Michael says that it is how it should be: you should be conscious and feel uncomfortable at the moment when you feel what is happening. So, I celebrate every moment that I can let go before reacting. There have been some of those tranquil moments and indeed, they made the bad momentum fall, dissappear.

I totally get it. I went to the park and felt overwhelming bad feelings... it was all within... I knew it was just the reactive muck within me stirring up...I didn't fight it...I just let it come and go. Sooo painful but wow! Your ego is forever trying to bring YOUR past to the present moment (not THE past but your past...your experiences etc.) He is soo right- we each have our own unique scars and mentalities and we always assume someone will read our mind and understand us when really we need to understand ourselves. Indeed, most people never understand themselves yet expect someone else to understand them 🤣 Go within!

Michael Singer makes normally difficult processes easy to understand. 25:17 - He often talks about how we try to manipulate our outside environment to make our insides feel better, This is a different and about the way we try to manipulate our inside and although it gets us closer to where we need to be, we eventually want to eliminate this as well.

I completely get what is being said here, and I, myself have watched myself go through those phases - not lashing out, working through it within myself, and not trying to assuage myself with a story. However, there are moments in time when someone does something or says something where, if it is not addressed, it is a huge disservice to decency and humanity. The response does not need to come from a place of anger or a blatant trigger response, but how does this pertain to real physical assault or violence perpetrated upon oneself? I would appreciate that being directly addressed.

Use your willpower to start an environment of transformation

According to Dr. Lynch, people who are over-controlled have the following four core deficits: - Lack of Receptivity and Openness: You tend to be risk-averse and hyper-vigilant. You may avoid new and novel experiences and can be dismissive of other people's input and feedback. - Lack of Flexible Responding: You may have a compulsive need for structure and order. You plan and rehearse everything. Your life may be governed by rigid rules you impose on yourself. You may also censor yourself and other people's behavior with high moral standards. - Lack of Emotional Expression and Awareness: You inhibit spontaneous emotional expression. Maybe you have expressions that do not match how you feel inside (e.g. you smile when you are distressed). You also tend to diminish your distress and adopt a stoic facade. - Lack of Social Connectedness and Intimacy: You may appear distant and aloof and keep people at arm's length. You may also compare yourself with others often and feel envious and bitter. These biology-based traits are powerful because they are unconscious and affect us without us even realizing it. ******* Because this is an innate predisposition, you cannot will yourself, think yourself, or use more willpower to control or talk your way out of it. ******* (Psychology Today) The Struggles of Quiet BPD Posted July 23, 2021 Over-control may help explain Quiet Borderline Personality Disorder.
