Impulsive draw has been one of the best ideas in a long time, and I love how far the idea of exiling cards to cast later has come, especially opponent's cards. I agree that standardising timings would be very helpful, but even without that, it interacts so well with red and red/black themes, creating a fast-paced feel even in long games, lots of replayability and a lovely sense of barely-controlled chaos.

I have been critical of red, green and white having access to card draw thinking about it in terms of power creep, flavorfail and color bleed. Now, I realize that MtG has evolved to the point where all colors absolutely need some form of card draw, removal and quality creatures at every mana cost. Impulse draw, like the fight mechanic in green, is a superb way of imagining how each color would approach each of its needs and will make the game better. I just hope they don't go overboard with them like the use of treasure tokens.

I’ve only ever heard the “exile the top X cards, you may play them until Y turn” effect called impulse draw, and I think it’s a fantastic name. It really captures the red philosophy of the mechanic. The only disappointing part of the mechanic is that it’s difficult to give a keyword to, since there is often a lot of variation in the aforementioned X and Y from card to card.

Hello ! Great video topic ! As a red player, I have many things to say for this video ! - First, I think, like "'Landfall" that precedes the card effect "when a land comes into play", if you had a different name before "until end of turn" and "until end of next turn", we would not have to search our card text for the word "next". like "Impulse draw" and "Quick draw" or something. Easy way for players to differenciate the 2 versions. - Secondly, you sneaky designer, Wrenn's Resolve is presented like the latest product out of the oven, but it is a copy of Reckless Impulse, not that I am complaining, but you presented it like the latest technology haha. - Also I would like to say I love the new mechanic that is slowly explored the last 2 years with red commanders, = rewarding players playing cards from exile. I am thinking of Prosper, Laelia and Faldorn (really good job, I love Baldur's Gate commander decks, they are for the most part amazing). I love this new way of playing, and I am excited to have others like those. For now it has been Treasures, +1/+1 counters for when your library is exiled, and tokens, I am interested to see the next ones, and by looking at Edhrec, I am not the only one loving this mechanic. - I just finished working on a Grenzo, Havoc Raiser commander deck, which is working on this mechanic of playing exiled cards. I love that you designers, thought about that, if you do not have enough mana to play cards from your opponents' library, you can just goad a creature. Forcing interaction by interacting, I love it ! - I would say that I am not sure of the direction of Unlucky Witness, isn't it encouraging you to not swing with it, a red creature, and to pillowfort, to only block with it, so that you might play the card during your next turn with fresh mana ? In my opinion it should be reversed. Like : if it dies during your turn, exile the cards until the end of your next turn, so that you have almost 2 turns to see the card and hatch a plan. Whereas if it dies during an opponent's turn, you exile it until your next end step. And because maybe it is too powerful for rakdos, sacrifice decks, you put 2 red pips on it ? I do not know, you are the designer, but I love thinking about this. - Finally, you talk about all this, but because you work on the cards that come out in 1/2/3 years, you know if there are changes to this mechanic in the forseeable future right ? How much time is there between when you start working on a product and the moment you finish working on to it ? Also between this moment of finish and the moment it is available on shelves ? Anyway have a very good day, and I do not know if there is a better place to ask questions to you, so here I am writing books in the comment section ! Have a good day ! (x2)

I think clue tokens are the absolute perfect draw for white, they just need to be more interacted with, for example there could be a Traben inspector but you can choose to either investigate once or sacrifice up to 2 clues and draw that many cards on etb, some equipment that etbs investigate 1 and every time you swing you can sac a clue to draw a card. You can also lean on the "You need various pieces to solve a mystery" like an enchantment that says "If you control 7 or more clues their activated abilites cost {2} less to activate" or "If you control 5 or more clues they have '{2}, sac: draw 2 cards' ". I really like Subira and Chandra, Heart of Fire effects that ask you to discard your hand in exchange for some limited form of card draw or Chan-draw. Right now in Pauper, Mono Red Kuldrotha is "drawing" more cards than Mono Blue Fairies, which is suppoused to be the primary draw color. And to top it all off, its also the deck which plays its cards the fastest since they are all MV 2 or less. Giving Red card draw is good, but it when the drawback can be so easily ignored because the fast nature of red cards mitigates the small window of time the card draw gives you, you face a deck that can kill you fast if you don't interact with it, and can recover if you do and kill you in the long run.

Red card draw is perfect the way it is in my opinion. In terms of color pie it represents red’s philosophy really well. As far as white, I think the way white card draw is right now makes sense for it in the color pie. White card draw engines are usually established by committing heavily to the board with tokens or with one-off effects, or by cooperation and diplomacy. It often requires a couple different moving parts in order to really start netting you cards. The whole “strength in numbers” philosophy is really encapsulated in white’s current options. I think white is doing well right now and could stand to continue to get more stuff like this. I do not think we should get a white Harmonize or anything like that, however.

It does way more than just draw cards which imo is too versatile at common For me the most powerful of these types of cards has been light up the stage. You could also do something with card text like exile the top (even #) of cards from your library, whenever you play one of these cards from exile, put a "banish counter" on another card in exile. Cards with a banish counter on them can't be played. Something to the effect of card selection and card draw in one where you get to play 2 of 4 or 3 of 6 cards you exile and it keeps those cards around a bit longer, but at a cost or if you have multiple exile effects you can use the weaker source of exile to fuel the stronger source and it gives lands in exile a way to fuel more plays as well.

White in general I think has a reactivity problem. It can't ramp without waiting for other people to do stuff, either. Maybe white needs ramp and card draw that looks similar to green's, where the proactive effects tend to be looking specifically for lands or creatures. White could perhaps look specifically for artifacts and small creatures, and assume those artifacts will be mana rocks?
@jackgillespie4594
@jackgillespie4594 Жыл бұрын
Actually, cantripping on small creatures is one of the four big ways that white can draw cards now according to WOTC! The other prominent ways are "jump through a hoop for up to one card each turn", "draw a card as a tax for doing something instead of charging mana or countering the ability", and "symmetrical draw effects that give card(s) to an opponent(s)". They all have their strengths and weaknesses I think- "jump through a hoop" is probably the most reliable and consistent, and I really like the flavor of white having to uphold practices or hold itself to a higher standard in order to get rewarded, I think it's super fun and flavorful. I like that it can be anything white cares about, from lifegain to attacking with two or more creatures to mentor of the meek style "when a creature with mana value 3 or less does yada yada". I think it's interesting that cantrip creatures and jumping through hoops are cut off at giving one card at a time because you're more in control of it, but taxing and symmetrical drawing lets you draw multiple in the same turn or even at once because they rely on the actions your opponents take.

I feel like white's draw should almost always be attached to permanents, which alone would make it stand out among how each color draws cards. It doesn't have to be creatures though. Enchantments, Battles, colored equipment, etc. or even triggered abilities that come from those permanents.

Impulse is how Ive always refered to it and that feels right. Red is Impulsive, the draw is ephemeral. Galvanic Relay has risen to my favorite implementation. That and Urabrask, Heretic Praetor. On the topic of how White draws, part of me feels the emphasis on commander has hurt the color pie and the strategic trade offs with picking colors. Should the question of card advantage be more "How does this color scale, what does it do late game" A corner stone of Green was always that yes it ramps to drop a big body early, but then it runs out of gas as a trade off. Then with giving Green access to card draw, it cause a lot of grief on the table experience.

I remember mono red in commander being almost impossible to build. You couldn't be aggressive and burn out when there was 120 collective life. You had to pick a gimmick commander and hope it carried you.

First off, love the video. I am happy to see you addressing red card draw. To me it is the biggest weakness of the color, and the main reason why it's still the weakest color in EDH. Also, I think white card draw is in a great place right now. It's varied, and players have a good amount of tools to catchup with their opponents. Now I think white can stand on the same tier as black in terms of EDH effectiveness. Now onto my main point. Red is still not in a great place. It's doing a lot better than it is 10 years ago. It could still be A LOT better. Impulse draw has too many weaknesses. Between losing important cards forever if you can't pay for it in time. To giving information away to your opponents. If discard strategies were more prominent in the format, I would be more forgiving. But it is not the case. I overall don't run impulse unless it's stapled to another powerful effect like mana generation via Jeska's will. One card I wished you commented on in the video but didn't was Seize The Spotlight. Which came with the New Capenna commander decks. That I think is a much better design for red card draw as it's about manipulating your opponents and taking advantage of the board state to get card draw. That's a design i'd like to see a lot more of going forward. As far as I am concerned, seize the spotlight is the first truly effective and yet flavorfully Red Divination.

There's probably some irony in the flavor text of Wild Guess saying "No guts, no glory", but then choosing to play it safer with the mana cost and costing it at RR.

What about cards such as Risk Factor or Browbeat, where you let the opponent choose damage or you get card draw? Do they want to risk you drawing into higher damaging cards, or take the damage now and hope you don't have more to use now? That "unknown" factor where the opponent spins the wheel for you (Hmmmm new card name: "Spin the Wheel"?) to see how it goes?

Every color needs a way to see more cards. Similarly every color should be allowed to meaningfully interact with the stack. Reprieve from the new set is an absolute slam dunk of a design. Now its green's turn for some meaningful stack interaction. There's no reason colorless should have more access to stack manipulation than green does. (See: Warping Wail vs Green Slime)

the red draw i like most is draw cards but then discard random cards. best example being rowdy crew. i wish there were more cards like that. they allow you to net gain cards but risk you discarding the cards you actually need. best way for red to stockpile cards while feeling red. but there need to be some more powerful cards that do this in order to make it worth the risk. especially for commander this would help red and if you put it on a 6drop or so, it wouldnt really hurt other formats. the other red draw i like is seasoned pyromancer, but to make it worth for red in commander it should probably be twice as expensive but also twice as many cards discarding and drawing. knollspine dragon is a good example for this type of draw that works in commander.

Also thanks for the video, I was thinking what can I do to get "Krenko, Mob Boss" combos working faster. Thanks for this vid!

I think "Impulse" has already stuck in the consciousness of the players, and it would be convenient if it's given a shortcut. Something like "Impulse 2" (exile two cards from top of library and play until next end of turn).

Though I've never seen this as proper Red Draw, I've always considered actual Red Draw to be like you draw a certain number of cards, but then need to discard the same amount (or more) during your endphase. Short term gains at the cost of long term advantage. Think Into the Void or Card of Demise if you play Yugioh.

I'm kinda disappointed my personal favorite of these cards didn't get even a showing, Valakut Exploration. As someone who HATES putting random cards (and potential combo pieces) off the top of my library in exile, this is the *one* effect that puts my mind at ease. It neatly combines the recursion-friendly discarding with impulse. I feel like I can't run both impulse and situational cards.

1) I love these. 2) The community calls it impulse draw. Likely named after Act on Impulse. 3) When it comes to WHITE, i have 2 problems with its draws. I don't know if others feel the same. 3.1- The draws are not focused around a single white theme. Token draw doesn't fit into an Angel or ETB deck. If archetype draw is what you want for white, fine; just make sure there is enough for each archetype. 3.2- Please reprint some of the draws you have already made.

Red honestly should've continued more down the path of full hand discard. and 1 mana versions. 1 red: Discard your hand draw 2+ cards. Going beyond 2 cards could be a criteria for things like the number of the cards in your discard pile with the same name. This is the kind of power that makes the most sense for red. Either you've burned through your resources already so your hand is minimal already, or you are impatient and just want something now that's better thus you're willing to pay the cost of losing your whole hand. This fits the old school wheel of fortune red as well which in my mind is the quintassential red draw. Impulse variants could be tuned up as well. 1 red discard your hand, impulse draw 3.

Reckless Impulse / Wrenn’s Resolve is my favorite magic card. One more copy of this card at common, please! It would be cool if white, and green got something like this at common too. By the way, Drannith Magistrate is way too hateful to red commander reliant decks that utilize impulsive draw!

Talking about card advantage, one thing that is blue but should be nice to add to white is gaining control of opponent's permanents While blue have this kind of "mind control" aesthetic, I can also see white politically convincing/bribing an enemy to be an ally

At least, in my playgroup, we often refer to that "exile the top N cards from your library and play them this turn" effect as _Robo de Impulso_ (Impulse Draw in spanish, since that's our native language). Try to adapt to our language something as clunky as Chan-Draw (Which seems still funny as hell to me).
