This entire season but especially this episode cemented Ymir as one of my favorite characters of the series. The OST, the beauty of her waking up and finding herself free and deciding to try to finally live for herself instead of for other people and sticking to a set path, it's all so amazing. But even when she tries to be selfish, we see instances of her encouraging Sasha to be who she is, regardless of how others see her, distracting Connie from thinking about his family, saving Daz, saving everyone in the tower, and even trying to save all those people in her flashback. No matter how much she tries to make herself seem selfish, she always helps other people and puts them before herself. And that's honestly so beautiful.

This is one of the risks of the dub job in anime; since the full story isn't out yet, you can't know if a small change in wording to fit the lenght in your language will affect the actual intended message. To be completely honest, anime cut The Uprising Arc left and right. So just in case you curious that Arc went from ch. 51 to 70. For example, you can actually find out the real reason why Historia punched Levi! Let's just say that anime "softened" Levi's actions and choice of words. Levi's monologues and dialogues suffered the most. But also Armin's thoughts... and Erwin's.. and Historia's... Thank god, that the rest of the story didn't get that treatment.

i just want to say that at 16:22 we see ymir in somewhere. that place is definitely not on paradis island. when i first watched this i thought she was just outside the walls somewhere and there was an aurora borealis type of light there. but now on the second watch i see that this is not where i thought it was. first of all, the ground is clearly not grass that is outside the walls but more of a sand arranged in sand dunes. and why isn't she wearing and clothes? when eren came out of titan form for the 1st time, his clothes were ripped but they were still there. ymir was wearing a dress when she was turned into a titan. also where the hell is ymir? i think this can be answered by the season 4 part 2 trailer. there it has eren standing next to the same light paths as ymir and from my own manga knowledge that i've picked up from the internet, i believe that eren was talking to ymir fritz (the 1st titan) in the trailer. oh and also i learned that the lights are paths that lead to the founding titan. i've not read the manga, so this is my guess. i think that when a person becomes a titan shifter they get taken to that place next to the paths, but that's all that i've been able to theorize. anyway, that whole scene with ymir waking up and realising she's free is so beautiful. the way the hopeful uplifting music swells accompanies the scene beautifully; the stunning animation and the dark night sky blue color palette only enhances the beauty of this scene enormously. the way ymir went from an unnamed character in season 1 to being one of the most complex characters in the show in season 2 is a testament to the incredible writing of isayama. the way that ymir transforms from living by other people's rules and feeling that she exists only to benefit others to taking control of her life and living by her own accord is phenomenal character development and incredibly inspiring as well. how she continuously tries to prove that she only lives for herself while also inadvertently helping others to not be constrained by society just feels so true to her character and personality. ymir's relationship with historia is so complex and deep, with ymir always looking out for her and staying by her side and historia wanting to be great friends with ymir. ymir may not admit this to may people, but historia is also a huge reason why she is able to keep moving on since she met her. this episode was ymir's time to shine and she did so beautifully.
