The thing that i think Mark is unbeatable is that after 30 years he can take an old song out from the box and play it effortlessly sometimes even better.......! Tons of talent there.... (The Machine Stops 2009 Live in Holland another perfect example).

I haven't seen them since the 00's because they seemed to keep playing the same tunes and I didn't like Marks twangy bass sound. Now Mark has sorted out his sound and they've dusted off tunes like Sandstorm, Heathrow and this I might buy a ticket in 2020. I would love Mike to sing Weave Your Spell instead of Starchild for 2020 :). Thanks for the upload.
@JBass425 жыл бұрын
My pleasure, this years set was so much better, I saw them at an 80’s do and it was just the hits which while that was enjoyable wasn’t what a die hard fan wants to hear!

@@JBass42 Hehehe. I've got this on loop while i'm working. It sounds like Mark forgot a few lines around 3:00. I've been playing bass for years and it's only earlier this year that I learnt this one. I like to think my energy traveled to them. Hahaha. I've got a couple of good quality early concert videos on my channel if you wanna check out the OG line up. Thanks again, you've really made my day.

@@JBass42 Yeah, it sounds tricky. I think that's why I never tried to learn it until recently. Try singing the bassline as you try to learn it. I've found that helps. Another tricky sounding Brit Funk one i've learnt recently is Take Your Time (Ultimate Mixx) by Roy Hamilton. I think you'll like it if you don't know it already.

Their most under stated album track, great to hear live. Wish Pete could be more subtle at times, but great footage...
@JBass425 жыл бұрын
He has calmed down alot, but can lack the subtlety of Gould and Husband on occasions
@bernlin20004 жыл бұрын
@@JBass42 I've certainly appreciated him more since watching the Sirens live material from 2015: I think at the 30th anniversary he had a tendency to butcher some of the slower songs (I simply can't watch his performance of "It's Over" compared to Gary's Holland 2009 show, which is just a totally perfect drumming performance of that song). He did pretty good here, until they start picking up in the last third of the song :-)
@JBass424 жыл бұрын
@@bernlin2000 he's definitely matured into the drum seat for 42, without doubt he is an amazing drummer, and I suppose like MK had to, he started to over play less, not that that's a string point of Mark, but that's why we live his playing, alot of the 42 material is geared around Marks playing, and I found early on PRG almost conflicted the rhythm but being OTT.

I can't wait to see them on Tuesday in Guildford! love his new bass, seen it earlier this year at Sarla. Ok i been trying to find that sound in my bass since the 80's . I hear Flange and delay. Any bass players know how he gets that sound????
@JBass425 жыл бұрын
30-90 strings, chorus, Yamaha e1010 delay unit and Trace Elliot stack. The Jaydee bridge pick ups are p's which definitely shapes the sound
@rapturekevin5 жыл бұрын
@@JBass42 Thanks for the info on the effects. I use a fender jazz . Jaydee bases are hard to come by in Canada. In fact I have never seen one nor Level 42 live. I did not know the bridge was a "p" pickup on the j.d. As for Trace Elliot its hard to find as well. I had a t.c. but sold it and got a Hartke. I'll see if i can find that sound. Cheers!

@@JBass42 Yes that's the real dilemma they have. They might not like admitting hit but to get the punters in they do have to do a pretty much ' greatest hits' set. Saw them in Brighton last Oct and the highlights for me were ' Floating Life' and ' Good Man in a Storm'. If they reeled off half dozen songs from the earlier jazz funk stuff the 70% of the audience would just sit there. Shame.
@JBass425 жыл бұрын
@@michaeldean7220 agreed, I recorded those and Sandstorm from memory. The band cones alive when they go for it on the old tracks, hopefully the new stuff will be a hint and what they can really do as musicians not just songwriters
