I loved The Tube when it was on. It was an opportunity to see bands play live, the producer was content to let them do their thing.. This is one of the best versions of this song I`ve seen played live, mainly as it`s back to the "old days" with a small audience. I go back to the times when they played "Heathrow" as an opener, to set their "levels" I suppose. Just watching them during this process and their nods and winks between them, you knew if they were enjoying it, and whether it would be a good gig. They were a bit of a musos band early on. No wonder, they were excellent live.

My favourite Level 42 are here, from their "Early tapes" in 1980 to True Colours... then came World Machine and Running In The Family, with many good pop songs. But the magic (and the jazz-funk) disappeared...

@nikondemo

@@Deeparabesque66 indeed ! I think all their album of the Eighties are enjoyable but it's a fact that World Machine is the definitive turning point in their music and career. That album and the single "Something about you" made them become worldwide superstars but at that point they made pop-rock music... the funk and the "black" influences had gone, at least in their studio works.

Funny how he was playing physical presence or one of this other D tuned sings right before this and forgot. Or at the last gig. Or the last time he played this particular bass. But - being the talented - multi tasking and quick on his feet - Mark King - he saved it with a fast tune to E - on the fly. ( Lifelong Bassist and Mark King fan ) Although they literally make D-Tuners now for this exact purpose. ( See : "Hipshot" ) Non bassists might not understand anything I just wrote above. Nor care. But that's ok. We understand. And also the fact that he sings lead vocals and plays all of this stuff at his technical level has always amazed me. Same with Geddy Lee.

So many fans say Level 42 "lost" the Jazz-funk in the mid 80s and then on a "pop" band. They didn't "lose" anything. They simply toned down the Jazz edge, but the funk/groove was and is always there.

This song absolutely blew away my baby mind in 1984. I thought it was so cool. And it was the best ever year for music in my opinion. This is such a wonderful performance with raw edges, sweat and excitement. 2 great vocals, world class musicians. Youthful exuberance before the world dominance that followed.

Still my preferred & best line up for a band that are still going as strong now as they were 4 decades ago & though there's been a few line up changes they still deliver a great Live set every time they play... I will say that i noticed via DVD Concerts & going to see them Live that Mark has lost that husky coarseness of his vocals quite a while ago but considering the amount of tours & live shows they have toured , while appearing on shows like this/along with recording songs & practising to make sure their live shows go on without a hitch its amazing he can still sing... You still cant beat the sound of his JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar which Mark became its unofficial poster boy for those bass guitar's but as ive sat here typing this ive just realised that apart from fans & fellow bassists ordering one tk be built ive never known any other bassist to play a JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar... If anyone can let me know if there were other famous bass player's that " predominantly " used a John Diggins JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar then let me know as i cant believe ive just realised this but either way John makes truly great basd guitar's & though he first built the JD range to give bassists as close to an Alembic bass sound but at a fraction of the cost he delivered a range of bass guitars that sounded as good & had their own unique sound... Though its a different line up its amazing these guys are still go out on tour & inbetween their usual 2 year break they usually start the ball rolling in the 3rd year with regards to booking definite venues & theu are usually back on tour every 3 to 4 years & they dont like they show any signs of slowing down but come their next tour id advise Level 42 to go & see then on their next tour as we just dont know if they decide to call it a day & you dont want to be sitting thinking " If only i booked those Tickets & went to see Level 42 Live " which could see it being their last & as soon as they announce their next tour dates & the tickets go on sale i'd advise you to book your tickets & go & see them play Live as there will be a point when they have to say enough is enough & im guessing it will be done to health issues that causes them to eventually stop but may the latter be many many many years away from even thinking of this happening... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus and its variants stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... .....
