Boon Gould for me was the ultimate Level 42 guitarist. But Alan Murphy... How do you replace Boon? Alan did. And the band loved him for his positivity and musicality. He knew he was dying. And told no-one, yet carried on and gave us these performances. Stunning musician. Incredible human being.

I don't think Alan replaced Boon in a "Guitar playing" sense he brought his own thing to the band, this is a great version of the song, because of Alan. R.I.P Brother. I need to find more videos of Mr Murphys' guitar playing.

A haunting performance from Alan, who was aware he was HIV positive, and in those days knew he had no hope. He was dying in full view of the crowd and noone knew it. (For non fans, Alan is the brilliant guitarist).

Alan Murphy what an Amazing Rock Session Guitarist especially in this song in Copenhagen. He played guitar for Kate Bush, Go West and Mike and the Mechanics. worked with the likes of Nick Heyward and Joan Armatrading. Unfortunately he died of Pneumonia at a very young age of 36. He is very famous for the Rock guitar in the song Silent Running by Mike and the Mechanics.

Not on this version, because it's very hard to distinguish, (especially on my li'l ol' 5 yr old Galaxy! 😊) but on versions where they're clearer, the four notes Mark plays immediately before he starts to sing, still make, and have always made me go weak at the knees... silly but it's true. ... and WHAT a record!!! 🎸🎶🎤

It's actually two things coming together: First you can see a piece of glass Alan holds with his left hand to slide it over the strings. This piece is a bottleneck, and the playing technique is called slide guitar. The second thing is the string feedback: The guitarist plays a tone, and when the guitar amplifier is tuned up loud enough the tone from the amp's loudspeaker sets the strings into resonance so that you can get an "endless sustain". Sometimes the string begins to resonate in one of the overtones, and that is the reason why the tone blends over to its octave after a few seconds. I hope I could help you 🙂
