Happy 63rd birthday to Mark King, Level 42 were on another level when they began, this reminds me of watching them as suppport act on a Wembley bill, their main man Mark King was a joy to watch on bass, the way he thumped, slapped & toyed with that guitar as if his life depended on it was brilliant

The first song they ever wrote, friggin' Beautiful... These lads even got it requested by Allan Holdsworth 🎸👽, during his brief stint with Level 42 in 1990 as a temporary guitarist... They had stopped performing it years before but Holdsworth wanted to enjoy it, so they rehearsed and performed it with The Master himself

Mark Kings melodic finger style is so often overlooked and only his percussive slapping and popping is discussed in interviews by journalists. He is a fabulous player and a brilliant musician, thanks for posting this.

Simply a delicious groove. Fell in love with this the first time I heard it. I often use Mark's opening riff as a warm-up exercise on my own bass. I've learned so much just watching Mark play.

Epic Phil's drumming on this track .love it and flying on the wings of love I got on 12 inch . That's when I knew level 42 was the nuts no a commercial band . At all then all changed for the charts. Such a great band . Phil left boon RIP xxx the level 42 continue. Like gary husband . Now pete . But all do a fab job xx

A9, G9, C9, F9, Bb9, Eb9, Db9, Gb9, B9, E9, back to A9. These are all 7th chords with no third and a 9th extension. Listen to the bass. 1, 5, 7, 9 is what Mark is playing.

Sean is actually from Whitley Bay, which isn't that far from me. A great sax player.
Also Mr King's bass lines are actual riffs; most of his song compositions are multi-riff layered so all sound great & are melodic & compliment the vocal lines.... Alot of other slap bass players mostly noodle around and sound confusing to me (not all). ..Anyways, he was born to play bass .. he's got to be the best singing bass player in the world 😊

I’ve listened to this track countless times and it wasn’t until a few years ago it dawned on me what the change in rhythm and the sax are emulating which made it all the more intense . Such an excellent song which the guys wrote and composed when they were all still young in their years .

@@peterjonesz agree; there's a live version of this with Kansas after Mike came back, unfortunately the mix does it no justice. The last 90 seconds of this track are a complete high point for me and the piano is integral to that. This guy did a great job
