"Take A Look" is a great slow song released in 1988 by LEVEL 42 and was the 3rd track from the Album "Staring at the Sun". Founding members Phil and Boon Gould, the band's primary songwriters, left the group prior to the making of this album in late 1987; they were replaced by guitarist Alan Murphy and drummer Gary Husband. Murphy died of AIDS-related diseases in 1989; he was replaced by the renowned fusion guitarist Alan Holdsworth.

What a brilliant track........Takes me straight back to those days. The most evocative track for me from that era. I was 18 years old then, a blend of hope and melancholy, with the sweet innocence of youth never to be repeated. Happy days.

The melody on this tune just kills me. Moving & beautiful. I remember as a pre-teen spending the night at my grandparents with my older teen cousin. We stayed up long past our bedtime to watch late-night music videos. This video I can vividly remember seeing that night for the first time and remember feeling "happy in a sad way" (didn't understand pathos at the time) after hearing this song. I'm glad to come back to it now as an adult to see that my tween taste wasn't bad--not bad at all.

My favourite lineup of Level 42. Alan and Gary brought their talents to the band after Boon and Phil left, and the Staring At The Sun album is one of their best records. This was shot in New Orleans in 1988. Alan knew he was HIV positive when he joined the band. He had just a year to live.

not listened to this for years until tonight. gave me the shivers. everything about this tune is perfect. love how the guitar mirrors the vocal melody in places. the key change during the 'see the smile on my face' bit (around 2:18), the harmonies, the arrangement, the atmosphere in the video, the lyrics plus they all look really cool too....... I'll shut up shall I?

Level 42...Truly one of the most outstanding bands ever!...More Jazz, than Rock, more Rock, than Pop...Fronted by Mark King, & Mike Lindup...Mark being one of the finest bass players ever...& Mike a top-flite keyboardist, & arranger...There vocals are a complete 360 from each other, but together their harmony is awesome!...This song, & the song "It's Over" are two of the most heart-felt, & well written pieces of music...5 Stars!

When I first heard this song in 1988 off the album it stood out straightaway. At the time, all the hype surrounded Heaven in my Hands - a great song in its own right - so I wondered if anyone else had been touched by this song like I had. It is a very compassionate helping hand to someone making serious mistakes, from someone having seen their folly. Compassion is rare in pop songs but something we all need from time to time. I memorised the lyrics then and never forgot them to this day.

I got into Level 42 when I bought the Staring at the Sun album, which includes this track. I never really rated this song. I then bought the entire back catalogue and focused on their other songs. I'm now in my early 40s, and I think I have grown up. Finally I get this tune. Now I appreciate it. It's a great soul tune. The lyrics are great with a wonderful flowing rift. It surely deserved greater success than its no.32 position in the UK charts?!
