'Rub my stomach while I pat my head.' Mark defies musical gravity singing over these incredible funky lines. This track is from the Pursuit of Accidents album. A masterclass in bass playing.

Always loved this one (my middle name is Lewis, proper spelling!) and the fact that from 42's entire catalogue this (I think) contains the highest percentage of proper slap.

This is for My future Son in Law ( Louis), a fellow Spurs Fan and Sparks. We are a small but elite group! I've just got to try and get Him into Level and Jazz Funk in general to get him to the real Top Tier of Blokes in general! When I was a kid there wasn't a newly laid bit of cement in people's front drives in the North Harrow area that didn't have Dave C, Spurs, England, Level 42 written on it at some point. 😄

True. 'The Pursuit Of Accidents' is a fantastic album and my old vinyl LP copy of it still sounds great on my stereo turntable after more than 40 years. Utterly timeless.

The first time I heard and saw the "hand slap" (aka thumb wacka) bass playin was by bassist Larry Graham of Sly & the Family Stone in the late 1960s . Mark King credits him . Although both used the conventional bass method too . Story is that Graham invented it to give the band a beat because they didn't have a drummer yet , when they started out

Maybe there is a section behind the seated audience that is for standing. As for the seated crowd, I have been to many Level 42 gigs and some of the security guards are a bit power mad and threaten to throw you out. When everyone gets up and starts dancing there isn't much they can do about it!
@DanielCasadoyStarlightTeatroM4 жыл бұрын
@@amandaLe4V2eL , it could be possible, but they don't even move on their seats. In Spain though some venues are seated everybody clap and sing along. And at the end of the show or when the band asks for it everybody stand up and dance till they they say goodbye

as far as I remember he's left-handed, which could explain why he can do it so easily...he's also one of the smartest and most humble people I've ever seen so, imagine...being left handed and playing a right handed instrument, when you originally wanted to be a drummer... he's truly one of the greatest 😅

been a music lover since childhood but my hands are like pods, anxiety prone never could play long enough without making mistake, had a good ear, could remember in my head total beethoven's 9th, good voice but baritone which was not in demand in late 60s to maybe still. anyway what i love about this jazz fusion is the chord changes . Are there also key changes in this song ? please any and all replies !!
@shinji3912 жыл бұрын
There are 3 key changes. E Dorian, C something, and then a different key.
@shinji3912 жыл бұрын
You can just look up how to play this song. I'm sure you'll find something.
@shinji3912 жыл бұрын
Okay it's not in E Dorian. Take that scale and add the major third because Mark moves chromatically to the G#.
@emo72372 жыл бұрын
thank you . It sounds like different key changes rather than just chord changes in the same key which is pretty easy. this sort of music by Level 42 is more complex and enjoyable

great song, good live performance but something is lacking . imho that something is someone, the original Level 42 keyboard wizard and great backing singer (and lead singer in his own right ) Mike Lindup . If memory serves , Mike would rejoin Mark King & level 42 in 2006 .
