Hi. I am a newbie to gardening and found your channel by accident, but LOVE it. As a newbie I have made some errors esp. on the lawn! We have lived here for just 12 months now and the lawn was at least 60/70% moss then. It is approx. 15M x 30M with a couple of flower beds and it is flat. So, in that 12 months I have killed the moss with sharp sand, aerated it manually (hard work!) scarified it manually (oh my goodness! HARD work), liquid lawn fed it 2/3 times, managed to kill patches when I misread some instructions on an improvement product, am in the reprocess of recovering these patches. I also identified Red Thread from one of your videos and think I have resolved that problem! So it has had to withstand some activity inflicted upon it by me. My intention was to leave it now until the spring and then repeat the aeration, scarifying and try to level out bumpy bits with top soil, reseed and see how it responds to all of that. But watching this video you are doing now what I bought to leave until the spring! I would be interested in your thoughts please! Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the channel :) Pretty much every lawn gets red thread, its not a biggie. I would get stuck into it now, September is the best month of the year for seeding lawns. You can't aerate a lawn enough.

Interesting tool for applying the top dressing there. Regarding the poor clayey soil, I once read from a lawn care guy over in America who enthusiastically promoted granular gypsum to improve the soil structure of poor clayey soil. I've tried it myself and it does seem to improve the structure of the soil.

Hi Robbie, love your KZbin series, watched them all and learnt a lot, but I have issues with my lawn and just want a bit of advice. When we got our bungalow the first thing we did is extend out the back as we had a large back garden. I then dug out all the borders as they were long thin areas of earth. After digging out a patio which I am still working on the lawn is approx 30' x 24' with a apple tree right in the centre of the lawn. I pollarded the apple tree as it was struggling and now had a lovely crop of cooking apples. I love the tree and do not want it to go but I think it is the cause of all the problems. I purchased a stainless steel four prong hollow tine fork which on the soft areas of the lawn works fantastic, beyond my expectations. But the majority of the lawn is so hard I cannot even push a garden fork in. The samples I have got show a clay soil with hardly any root on the grass. The lawn up and till now has looked fine but I wanted to improve it but this summer it looks like it is dying, so bad that if I rake it lifts off in great clumps. I am sure it is down to compaction and possibly due to the tree taking all the water and drying the soil out under the lawn. That is a guess on my behalf. I did leave the sprinkler on one section of the lawn for over three hours and it made no difference I still could not push a fork in. I am very loath to leave a sprinkler when we have water shortages in our area. I was going to wait for the rain which will hopefully last more than one day when it decides to rain, I will keep testing with my aerator, then when it is soft enough I propose to go over the whole garden and as close as possible around the tree. From then I am hoping if I keep on top of the aeration, regular watering the problem should be controllable. Is this what you would suggest and if so I got it all from watching your wonderful series. Eventually I will scarify and put a top dressing on along with feeding the lawn. Regards Chris

To be honest I’ve just done a lawn renovation and putting on the top dressing was the easiest part. If anything I think that looks like a hassle and time consuming. It’s good for taking out the stones but to me that isn’t really a top dressing. It’s a top soil whereas a good top dressing would have already be screened.

It makes more sense to dethatch first and then aerate. After dethatching clean up and then aerate because you want those plugs to break down in the soil and not be picked up from your clean up. Also i would think you would pull better plugs with the thatch removed first.

I'm not criticizing you mate just asking because the grass looks quite tall? This only makes it harder to scarify and potentially damage and pull up more living turf. I would think Ryan's thinking the same as me. Also scalping or cutting it shorter will prevent flattening all the turf when adding a top dressing. Just asking is all. Hi Robbie, Thanks for a good video as always. I hope you see my question even tho its an old video. We had a company here 5 years ago who redid our lawn from scratch. Removed the old one and added new soil(with clay) and new grass. Now 5 years later even tho maintained it looks the same again, terrible. When you ad compost or/and topdress often, can that turn it into a good lawn or should it be removed again and built up from the beginning again by someone whos really a professional? The clay is terrible, super wet when it rains and hard as rock when it dries.

Robbie i scarified and aerated about 5 weeks ago now. I'm going to overseed and topdress this weekend. Would you recommend a quick run over with the scarifier first to get the grooves in the ground that would allow the seed to germinate better with the soil or will it be ok without doing it? Thanks again
