I have owned this exact garden tractor for almost 4 years now. I had no previous experience with any tractors before buying this one. Previous to finding your videos, I have had my local repair shop do all my service needs, but now with your videos I think I am ready to try some of this on my own and save some money...as well as give myself more self confidence around my machines. Thank you and keep the videos coming!

@@dwcoffey So, I work at a Western Auto store. Blast from the past, I know. We've been in business for going on 83 years, now, and ours might literally be the last WA in existence. Anyway, we sell Husqvarna mowers, and deck leveling is the latest of the various random jobs I've been tasked with over the years. I've got NO experience with this. I'm not even handy worth a damn, at all... so this video has been a godsend. Just wanted to say thanks man!

Hi Mr Coffey great video. The Pastor of the church right next door to my house always asks me to fix things for them and just the other day I replaced the Spindles on their riding mower and he asked me to level the deck since one side cuts higher then the other, I told him it was the adjustment nut on the one side and now your video confirmed it for him. Thanks. :)

Okay, Dennis, I had to follow up with you. I've had my Husqvarna rider for 12 years and have never leveled my deck. The last few years I've been scalping my lawn and wondered what the heck is going on. I thought, "Maybe it's my deck?" So I searched KZbin and your video came up. I watched your video, took notes, and went for it. My deck was soooo out of whack in the front and back and my scalp-preventing wheels were set on the top hole, so I lowered both to the bottom (we have lots of dips and valleys too). WOW. I did my 1st mow here in Ferndale, WA (where it's like a rain forest) and I was amazed at the difference. Thank you so much, Dennis, for taking the time to make this video. You literally saved me hours of time raking because my deck was cutting way too low...even on the highest setting!

Thanks Dennis. You just helped me to get the Husky to cut more even. Yes, these mowers only have about three height settings possible to cut at.......MAYBE 4 if I messed with the wheels. I've had my Husky 12 or 13 years and the cutting height issue is something that has bothered me. It's only a problem if you let your lawn go to long in the spring and it gets too tall. You can't cut high and lower it for a second pass. I just learned to get with it in the spring and don't let it go to long! LOL!!

You are so right about measuring to the blade. I was getting frustrated by the ordeal until I eyed a long 3/4" wood dowel in my basement. I cut the dowel to about 2 1/2". I place the cutting blade per instructions in the manual and set the dowel against the blade and mark it with a pencil. I then put either a "R" or "L" for the Side I mark. I use pencil so that I can erase the line when readjusting. Thanks for your video, enjoyed it.

Hey Dennis, nice, precise, well-explained video. I just picked up a YTH18K46 with only 260 hours on the Kawasaki engine. It looks almost new, you can tell it was properly maintained. However... I did find the dreaded grass clumps underneath the engine/tank area that keeps the drive belt from being fully engaged. Cleaned all that debris out of there and thought hey, might as well do the deck. I jotted down some notes from this video and heading out to work her over. Thanks again for a very good video.

Thank you for this video series! I really appreciate your use of English versus Metric measurements, as that allows me to reach for a tool, and not go back to my pc and try to do the needful and make adjustments. Thanks for a really nice video! A suggestion: At 7:37 when you are tightening the locknut with your 11/16 wrench, you should hold the adjustment nut with the 3/4 wrench so it doesn't move out of adjustment. This is why they are different sizes, so you don't need two wrenches of the same size.

Dennis, you state in the video that you can't raise the mower deck higher than 3 1/2 which I found to be true with my new Husky mower. But while making the left side adjustment, it looks like there is a lower mounting hole on the orange mounting bracket that you can reattach the 'black' rear steel arm that should give another 1-2 inch clearance. What do you think?

i would think you could remove both nuts and add alot washers and lift the deck as much as you want. or does arm length become an issue. just bought my hus. last week and already want to raise the height.

I have found that using a scrap piece of 2x4 (4”-5” in length) is an easy way to confirm the floor to cutting edge height. I place the deck on the 3 1/2” height setting, then slide the 2x4 block underneath the deck to see where it meets the cutting edge. Since the actual width of the 2x4 is 3 1/2”, you simply adjust the deck until the cutting edge meets the top of the 2x4 block.

I like 2" blade height. I have plastic caps from spray paint cans that are exactly 2" high, I slip them under the blade tips on the ends side to side, then a little less in the front blade tips turned to the front, and a little more with blade tips turned to the rear. Yep, getting a tape under there is a hassle. Look around, plastic caps are in all sizes, or you could cut some pvc or something.

Can you get an extra 1/2 inch cutting height by changing to larger diameter tires? Mine cuts too low.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes, if you can find larger OD tires that fit, technically, you will increase the cutting height by half the OD difference. So if the tires are 1" larger in diameter, you'll pick up a 1/2" in cutting height.

Great video, I have the same mower, and have watched just about every video you have made. I was going to ask you how I could raise the height of cut, but you answered my question at the end of your video. Maybe another of your viewers has a solution. There does not seem to be enough room to put bigger tires on. I just inflate my tires to double what it calls for.🤷🏻‍♂️

Rick, Easiest would be to add a spacer block to where the transmission bolts to the frame. You would verify how much you can go to not put too much of an angle on the drive belt. 1/2 or 1" square tubing from the hardware store for the rear and larger tires on the front.

Thanks for watching, Daniel! I only check mine when I change the blades or when I see that I'm not cutting level (like if I notice may first pass across the lawn isn't quite level). Normally it wont get out of level unless you hit something, etc.

Great video but I have a question as I just bought a mower like this. You can adjust one side of the deck but is there a way to raise the entire deck? I need about 2 more inches of clearance to easily get in and out of my shed.

Thanks for watching, Ryan! That seems to be one of the most common complaints about this mower. I have not found a way to raise the deck above the highest factory setting.

I have a YTK46. I first started to adjust my Deck from rear to your recommended height. I made cut two guides 2" x 3" for (left and right) rear and two 2" x 2 1/2" for front. Problem I encountered is Rear Right height. It will not equally Level as adjusted with Left. Rear Right is lower and I can't figure why it will not. What am looking at is to cut and monitor how it would show.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching, Jesus! It sounds like the left rear is still too high and should be let down enough to match the height of the right rear. These Husqvarnas have very low deck heights (one of their chief complaints).

I dont understand why you have to level the deck since I have a Craftsman 48 inch 22 HP once I put my cutting height at about 2 1/2 inches ( #5 setting on mine ) and my deck has 4 anti scalp wheels that are fixed and cant be adjusted ( 2 wheels in the front and two on the back of the deck ) however all 4 of those anti scalp wheels are on the ground while cutting, if my deck is higher in back or front what difference does it make while up in the air ( #10 setting ) . since all 4 anti scalp wheels are touching the ground and leveling out the deck while I'm cutting grass? Am I missing something? Thanks in advance. Great video by the way.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Tom! Since your anti-scalp wheels ride on the ground all the time, you probably do not need to level your deck at all. Most mowers have the anti-scalp wheels set to only touch the ground on high spots, so you want the deck level while cutting flat areas.

Hey Dennis, The trick to making the deck higher is to remove both rear hanging rods, cut an inch out of each and weld back together. I honestly hate my 42" Husqvarna because it cuts so short. A healthy lawn should be about 4" in my opinion. I have a 46" Ariens and it lifts high enough and have never hit or damaged the blades. My 42" Husqvarna, well, I've replaced about 5 mandrills, double that many blades and I can hardly mow without a mishap.Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I have not cut the adjustment rods but am thinking seriously about doing it. Will it work if I do? What say you?
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I don't see any reason that won't work. If you shorten all 4, the deck will be higher and you'll still have height adjustment.

@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! No, I didn't really specify the height because it isn't really adjustable and it may vary a bit from one tractor to another. The only real adjustment on these mowers is the leveling adjustment. The height is only affected by the cut height control. I hope I explained that well enough.

Thanks Dennis for another great video! On a separate matter, my park brake is in the lock position and will not disengage. In-other-words, you when you press down on the park brake and will not release even when trying to raise up the park brake lever. I have removed the deck and still am unable to unlock it. Must be an issue with the linkage. I can see where the park brake linkage connect to the park brake lever and it appears the lever is higher than the frame and there is not clearance to clear. Thus it is in a lock position. Any ideas? Where do I get the flat free tires on you mower as shown in the video?
@dwcoffey

Hi Rex, yes, definitely sounds like a linkage problem, either from the pedal or the parking brake lever. I have a video on the falt free tires and there's a link in the description for buying the, Thanks for watching!!

Well Dennis....as it turned out, my mower end up at a repair shop. They got the park bake unlocked and then call the manufacture on how such an event was possible. Turns out when you lock the park brake, it also locks the cruise control so you can engage the cruise control by accident. Solution...remove the cruise control.

For the cutting height there isn't much that says you can't use the deck level and rake adjusters to get a bit more height. Run them as far as they'll go in the up direction then bring them down until it's level and raked a bit. I doubt the belt system will have issues accommodating the 1/2-1 inch higher deck.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 2 жыл бұрын
That's right....you can't pick up much height, but as low as Husqvarna put these decks, every little bit helps! Thanks for watching!
