I had not worn a pair of jeans for over 10 years. I first bought some cheaper jeans and they were OK but I was not impressed with the fit. Then I bought a pair of Levi’s and they were way better. I have discovered that for me the shrink to fit are the best.

I have been wearing 501 STFs since the late 1960s and only wear 501s made in the USA before 2000. I just went and measured the hem width of 5 pairs. Two were 8 inches, two were 8 1/4 inches, and one was 8 1/2 inches (I have a 36 inch waist).

Same here.. I had a couple of 501s from 2002 and 2004.. waist 34.. the hems measure 8.5 to 9 inches.. all of them are 100% cotton, no stretch whatsoever.. it's sad they don't fit me anymore.. I've kept them safe though.. they're still in great shape.

Took my STF from 34 to 36. The waist shrunk (one size down), but not so much at the thigh, so they're still more loose than my regular 501. Using them as a pyjama, but rather save the money (100$CAD) and buy a Premium/selvedge 501. Bought the 501 150th, but stay to my true size since they're already larger fit. Will just be more carefull to ajust in washing temperature.

I actually like when Levis STF jeans fade though I see your point about them fading too fast. They are too expensive now and you want them to last. I remember way back in the 60s, 70s and 80s most people wanted their denim to get faded and worn looking. That was the style. They'd even put patches on them when there were holes. I think people mostly washed them in the machine and even sometimes put them in dryer so they'd be snug when put on though they'd stretch a bit on the waist when worn. I used to wash my jeans very frequently because I didn't want them all bagged out and didn't want to always have to wear a belt to hold them up. I don't like the look of new STF jeans. They are too stiff and don't form to the body well. My goal is to get them faded and comfortable. Way back when Levis 501 jeans were unisex. They didn't carry them in womens. I mostly wear mens now because womens mostly have spandex in them, which I hate. I've had pairs like that and got rid of them. I lucked out recently and found a woman's 501 on ebay, no spandex! I don't size up at all because mens run big and I want them shrunk smaller so they fit right.The styles of 501 change from time to time, as well as the quality. There was a time when the width of the leg bottom was a bit narrower (some legs look too wide.) I liked them but unfortunately many, many years ago I got rid of them. I was never a saver and when I stopped wearing certain jeans I got rid of them. Wish I hadn't. They'd be a size too big for me now but I could wear a belt. lol

One thing I wanted to point out (I've made a couple of comments already on here) is that by not putting them in the washer (cold water, delicate cycle, turned inside out) the weave doesn't get as tightened on the STF jeans. My STFs are all thick feeling, the weave is tightened up. I also put them in the dryer sometimes, depending on how they fit. But I am careful and put them in with wool dryer balls and old towels so they aren't in there really long. The quality isn't as good now so I have to be more careful. Back in my time period people just washed them alot but they were still strong even though very faded. I remember not worrying about washing and drying my jeans. I don't think anybody really worried like now. Of course it depends how you like them to fit. I don't like my jeans loose and long.

ALL these legendary brands have gone to shit. Even mid quality 90's brands like DKNY, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger etc etc have COMPLETELY sold out and gone to shit. I mean the quality is truly hilariously bad and the balls they have for asking the prices they ask is insane! The only way to get good quality jeans nowadays is to buy from denim specialist. Expensive yeah but the quality should be lifelong.

I can relate. I am 68 and loved the way they were made back in my time period. You could keep washing them and they'd look great no matter how faded they got. That was the style to be faded and snug. They'd stretch as you wore them. I wouldn't care to wear of pair of new STF. They are too stiff and not blue enough. Too baggy and the bottom legs are too wide, like bootcut. I'd have to keep washing them to get them right and by that time they'd be worn out. Too expensive now to do that.

I am a Levi's lover. Nothing else quite feels right. The front is so iconic, as well as the back pockets. Everything about them is awesome - if you buy LVC or vintage. I got a pair of STF when they finally became available in Europe. They arrived a couple of days ago, and what can I say? They're awful. Loose threads everywhere, size is very strange, the fit is not flattering at all. The waist is loose and the back pockets are placed way too low. They look worse than H&M jeans. I have washed them to shrink them so I'm not sure about the return, but I could live with an exchange to a better size (33x36 instead of the 34x34 I got). There's just so much wrong with these jeans nowadays. I will try Wrangler 13mwz and stick to LVC for the proper denim, because STFs aren't what I thought they'd be.
@Klaxet

You are absolutely right, quality of non LVC jeans diminished greatly. I would say the best way to go with either LVC or look elsewhere. Recently I discovered Kojima brand - exceptional quality. how can I know old levis stf from looking at the care instructions ? I saw a lot and is not aware to discern a vintage or old stf levis. kind of a bum as I have soruces selling used ones at good conditions.
@BlueMountain2017
@BlueMountain2017 7 ай бұрын
This probably won't help you but I find pairs on ebay occasionally and sometimes the seller doesn't say that they were STF. I like when they show pics of the measurements because then I could see that they shrank a lot and were probably originally STF. I was pleased when I received them because I felt I got a bargain. I looked at the tags inside and those ones I mentioned said they shrink 10 percent. That's when I knew for certain that they were STF. Those pairs are my favorite because they fit well. I find I have to be very wary when I order because I could just be getting the stone washed, pre-washed kind that doesn't shrink much in length so then I have to roll them. No matter how much I wash and dry them (in the dryer) they hardly shrink. The new STF are just too expensive for me but I like the way they shrink when washed and dried.

I started wearing 501s back in the early 1980s when they were still being made in the USA. I was a preppy dude wearing SPERRY TOPSIDERS, Argyle socks, and IZOD LACOSTE POLO shirts. The quality was great back then! I still wear LEVI 501s as a mod type of cat, but, I have mine tailored and dry-cleaned with a crease and heavy starch. I rarely machine wash them! If I do, I wash them in ONLY cold water with WOOLITE for DARK COLORS ONLY! Then I hang dry them. I still dig the look, history, and brand. But having them tailored to a sta-prest British mod effect is my look! The quality has diminished over the decades! And I'm highly disappointed that the price has doubled!
