The first time I saw this product I thought it was cool as hell. Then I saw all the excellent reviews spotted across the web. I’ll definitely be picking one of these up when I own an aircraft.
@tomdchi12 Жыл бұрын
My only critique is that as someone who isn't familiar with the product and what it can/can't do, it would have been helpful to start with a bit more info along those lines - specifically that it does a lot of what a Sentry/Stratus type device does, but adds critical info like independent air speed and AOA. Makes a ton of sense for an aircraft owner who still has a vacuum system as primary.
@triedproven9908 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I had no idea what he was talking about. Had to infer it was an independent sensor array when he started talking about the level app. A product description would have been useful.

Think he didn't really "plan" this video, hence all the crazy jump cuts from one spot to the other. pretty hard to follow along.

They have another video where they discuss what it even is. I guess because I had seen that, I didn’t think about it, but you raise a great point. He probably should link that video in this video or the description.

Dan, Have been flying with bom over a year and couldn’t agree more. As you said the Levil folks are always glad to help and never make you feel like you’re wasting their time even if you’re an electronics idiot like me.

I was one of Levil early customers with their first and second generation AHRS for my Nanchang CJ6A. They are a great crew willing to assist in any way possible. I am lucky to be located close enough to have visited in person. Unfortunately, I had to do that too many times. Then their first generation ADS-B gave me real fits. No matter what I did, I couldn't get a clean report. After I sold the airplane, they finally gave refunds to those that had them in favor of their new product. I wish them the best.

Ive had one form the beginning they were offered and been having nothing but problems. They have been great to work with, but I am struggling with this thing. I cant rely on my ADSB and have had 2 close calls. I really want this to work since I like the features but i fly with my 4yr old and need stable Wifi and ADSB

Doesn't Foreflight already have AHRS?

It emulates an AHRS or it gets the info from an existing AHRS- but ForeFlight is software and has no ram air etc.

Looks nice and I appreciate it but just wondering what this gives me over my Stratus. Some details like the g meter but for the most part seems about the same.
@TakingOff4 ай бұрын
Is your Stratus an AHRS? If so then yes, I'd say it doesn't give you anything. But if the Stratus is not an AHRS, the BOM is a significant backup.

Where you able to mount this on a certified airplane if so. Did you have to do a 337. Looking to put one on my Luscombe. And my A and P is asking what is needed to get it on a certified plane
@TakingOff Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is on my Cessna 210. No it does not need a 337. It's a minor alteration that my IA put in as a logbook entry.

How does the BOM turbine handle icing conditions? Can I use this system for IFR? Can one use this to get IFR ratings if the plane has an old certified IFR six-pack & VORTAC system? I want to learn GPS approaches as well as old school
@TakingOff Жыл бұрын
It has an automatic pitot heater on the front and can handle light to moderate icing (I should know, I took it into icing). As far as IFR, it is not certified so you can only use it for situational awareness.
@timduncan8450 Жыл бұрын
@@TakingOff Thx is there a resource you or Levin can point me to for all the details. I am thinking I would use it as an augmentation& backup to my steam gage IFR equipment.
@TakingOff Жыл бұрын
@@timduncan8450 just to make sure I understand correctly- the BOM is an AHRS supplement; in other words it can duplicate or replicate your six pack. It is not a GPS or VOR navigator as I understand it. In addition to the six pack, you get Adsb traffic, angle of attack and data recording.
@traumamed9449 Жыл бұрын
Add-on question as a guy who will be taking his IFR ride soon in a plane with an old 6-pack for primary instruments: obviously this is for backup purposes only, but when the DPE inevitably fails my vacuum gauges, can this be used as an assist for maintaining proper attitude and heading?
@Cavalier-lp8tr Жыл бұрын
I wish I could use it on my plane! Low wing - cloth wing - tail dragger - wood construction. I don't know how I'd mount it. 😐

Nice review and pretty much what I had hoped to hear. You’re right about it being great for experimental but you did not consider guys like myself that fly Champs and Cubs we fly certified planes but often have the FAA minimum in instruments. The Champ I fly doesn’t even have a Ball so how cool would this be for me. The only question I have is if the Bomb is installed on an airplane which is currently exempt because it has no electrical system does it retain its exemption?

5:56 the flying club I fly with has some DA40s with G1000 panels. The synthetic vision is very good, but the "small bar under the tiny triangle" turn coordinator symbology is absolute hot garbage. I've noticed that only a few companies outside of Garmin use this. Most use the old but reliable symbology instead. Good for Levil for not re-inventing the wheel for no reason.

Question: you have AHARS in ForeFlight, what benefit would you have using BOM vs ForeFlight? Thanks
@TakingOff Жыл бұрын
You don't have a true AHRS in Foreflight. There's no ram air going into Foreflight telling you your indicated airspeed. The attitude reference is based on the apple iOS and not a true attitude reference. What foreflight does is take GPS readings to simulate all that information. Or it patches into your current AHRS but Foreflight does not have an AHRS native.

Very cool but I need a clarification. Does the Bom show your magnetic heading (which way the nose is pointed) or magnetic course (which way the airplane is moving?
@anandaleon Жыл бұрын
both. it has a three-axis magnetic compass, and also GPS. It derives your magnetic course from the GPS

More electronic stuff. Yet, looking at the avg 20 people killed in GA monthly. A good portion of them are flying too slow and end up stall spin. How about more AQP training for pilots and less cockpit distractions?
@Hedgeflexlfz Жыл бұрын
Yea too many electronic gadgets, I would never look at my ipad when flying for stuff like this
@glennwatson Жыл бұрын
iPads and electronics are here to stay. I agree they need to be managed correctly though and can be a threat as much as a help. Integration of correct use is the best way forward since pilots will use them with or without training.
